Slife and Reber ask of psychologists that they recognize their prejudice against theism and the incompatibility between theistic and naturalistic worldviews. Yet, the subtext of their article is that theism and naturalism are equally valid and that psychology’s secularism is a mistake. Given that theism is not beyond reason, the only sufficient ground for charging psychologists with prejudice is if (i) theism has survived serious attempts at conceptual and empirical test, and (ii) psychology ignores or disguises this fact. So, the grounds for believing in the reality of a supernatural existent are highly relevant to the authors’ allegation. However, their concept of God affords no such grounds. They disavow the logic involved in the ordinary meaning of the term “incompatible” and they ignore a crucial distinction between conditions of existence and qualities of things or processes. The consequence is that either God is this-worldly, and there is no ontological basis to Slife and Reber’s incompatibility thesis, or God’s mode of existence is quite different from the mode of existence of ordinary things and all the problems of dualism follow. Either way, their charge of prejudice is without foundation. The burden of proof rests with the defender of theism and, for now, psychology’s secularism can be considered a mark of the discipline’s (sometimes questionable) rationality. The presence of air voids, moisture, and chlorides inside tendons or ducts was cited as a reason for the early age strand corrosion and failure in the Mid-bay, Sunshine Skyway, and Niles Channel posttensioned (PT) bridges in Florida, United States. Although rare, these incidents call for frequent inspection and structural reliability assessment of PT bridges exposed to moisture and chlorides. This paper develops and presents probabilistic strand capacity models that are needed to assess the structural reliability of such PT bridges and recommends a time frequency of inspection. A total of 384 strand test specimens were exposed to various void, moisture, and chloride concentration conditions for 12 and 21 months; the remaining tension capacities were then determined. Using this experimental data and a Bayesian approach, six probabilistic capacity models were developed based on the void type. The mean absolute percentage errors of these models are less than 4%, indicating that reasonably accurate prediction of the strand capacity is possible, when void, aggressive moisture, and chloride conditions are present.  相似文献

A theoretical formulation of the linear elastic in-plane and torsional behavior of corrugated web I-girders under in-plane loads is presented. A typical corrugated web steel I-girder consists of two steel flanges welded to a corrugated steel web. Under a set of simplifying assumptions, the equilibrium of an infinitesimal length of a corrugated web I-girder is studied, and the cross-sectional stresses and stress resultants due to primary bending moment and shear are deduced. The analysis shows that a corrugated web I-girder will twist out-of-plane simultaneously as it deflects in-plane under the action of in-plane loads. In the paper, the in-plane bending behavior is analyzed using conventional beam theory, whereas the out-of-plane torsional behavior is analyzed as a flange transverse bending problem. The results for a simply supported span subjected to a uniformly distributed load are presented. Finally, finite element analysis results are presented and compared to the theoretical results for validation.  相似文献

The size and shape of soil particles reflect the formation history of the grains. In turn, the macroscale behavior of the soil mass results from particle level interactions which are affected by particle shape. Sphericity, roundness, and smoothness characterize different scales associated with particle shape. New experimental data and results from published studies are gathered into two databases to explore the effects of particle shape on packing density and on the small-to-large strain mechanical properties of sandy soils. In agreement with previous studies, these data confirm that increased angularity or eccentricity produces an increase in emax and emin. Furthermore, the data show that increasing particle irregularity causes a decrease in stiffness yet heightened sensitivity to the state of stress; an increase in compressibility under zero-lateral strain loading; an increase in the critical state friction angle ?cs; and an increase in the intercept Γ of the critical state line (there is a weak effect on the slope λ). Therefore, particle shape emerges as a significant soil index property that needs to be properly characterized and documented, particularly in clean sands and gravels. The systematic assessment of particle shape will lead to a better understanding of sand behavior.  相似文献
