In this report we describe the manufacture and use of tools in captive groups of tufted capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella). Apparatus designed to accommodate probing and sponging behaviors were introduced into the monkeys' home cage with materials provided for fashioning tools. In one group of 9 capuchins, 6 were successful in manufacturing and using probes, and in a second group, 4 of 5 capuchins were successful in using probes, and 3 in manufacturing them. In a follow-up study with the larger group of capuchins, 8 monkeys were successful in manufacturing sponging tools from paper towels. Our studies provide the first report of spontaneous manufacture of tools in any group of monkeys. The tool-using and manufacturing behaviors observed in the capuchins were similar in form, function, and ontogeny to those that have previously been reported for chimpanzees. Our results provide further evidence that capuchins possess extensive manipulative propensities and emphasize the significance of the normal social environment in the full expression of these propensities. Finally, we spell out some directions future research could take in developing an understanding of the psychological characteristics underlying tool-related behaviors in diverse species. Primates live in complex social groups that necessitate recognition of the individuals with whom they interact. In humans, faces provide a visual means by which to gain information such as identity, allowing us to distinguish between both familiar and unfamiliar individuals. The current study used a computerized oddity task to investigate whether a New World primate, Cebus apella, can discriminate the faces of In-group and Out-group conspecifics based on identity. The current study, improved on past methodologies, demonstrates that capuchins recognize the faces of both familiar and unfamiliar conspecifics. Once a performance criterion had been reached, subjects successfully transferred to a large number of novel images within the first 100 trials thus ruling out performance based on previous conditioning. Self-control is defined as forgoing immediate gratification to obtain a greater reward. Tool use may relate to self-control because both behaviors may require foresight and deliberate control over one's actions. The authors assessed 20 capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) for the ability to delay gratification in a tool task. Subjects were given rod-shaped food items that could either be consumed immediately or be carried to an apparatus and used to extract a more preferred food. The authors found that some monkeys were able to exhibit self-control. Monkeys with relatively more tool use experience demonstrated the greatest levels of self-control. These results indicate that capuchins are capable of delaying gratification when a higher quality reinforcer is present and that tool experience can influence levels of self-control in this task. Memory of 3 capuchin monkeys, Cebus apella, was tested with lists of 4 travel-slide pictures and different retention intervals. They touched different areas of a video monitor to indicate whether a test picture was in a list. At short retention intervals (0 s, 1 s, 2 s), memory was good for the last list items (recency effect). At a 10-s retention interval, memory improved for 1st list items (primacy effect). At long retention intervals (20 s and 30 s), primacy effects were strong and recency effects had dissipated. The pattern of retention-interval changes was similar to rhesus monkeys, humans, and pigeons. The time course of recency dissipation was similar to rhesus monkeys. The capuchin's superior tool-use ability was discussed in relation to whether it reflects a superior general cognitive ability, such as memory. In the last two decades, it became largely accepted that monkeys show little, if any, copying fidelity. However, some recent studies have begun to challenge this notion. To explore reasons for such contrary findings, we designed a foraging apparatus so that in each of two experiments with capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella), a model would demonstrate one of two alternative methods to obtain food. The apparatus had a V-shaped track on which a panel could be slid up left or right from the center to reveal food. In Experiment 1, food was located in a cup directly behind the center panel. In Experiment 2, sliding the panel left or right revealed food either in left or right ends of the V-track. Since this sliding movement led directly to one food location exclusive of the other, we predicted capuchins would show greater copying fidelity in this second Experiment. Instead, subjects were significantly more faithful to the model’s method in Experiment 1, which provided strong evidence of capuchins copying what they had observed. We suggest that the contrasting results of Experiment 1 may have occurred because capuchins prioritize exploratory behavior when alternative foraging locations are accessible. Four tufted capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) were trained to choose from 2 hook-like tools, 1 of which successfully led to collecting food, whereas the other did not because of inappropriate spatial arrangement of the tool and the food. In Experiment 1, all of the monkeys successfully learned the basic task. The monkeys performed successfully with tools of novel colors and shapes in Experiments 2-5. These results demonstrate that the monkeys used the spatial arrangement of the tool and the food as a cue. However, they failed when there were obstacles (Experiment 6) or traps (Experiment 7) on the path along which she monkeys dragged tools. These results may suggest that capuchin monkeys understand the spatial relationship between 2 items, namely, food and. the tool, but do not understand the spatial relationship among 3 items, namely, food, tool, and the environmental condition. This research examined lateral bias for rotational behavior in tufted capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella). A symmetrical distribution of rotational bias was noted, with approximately equal numbers of Ss preferring to turn to the right and to the left. As a group, adults did not exhibit a lateral rotational bias. Immatures preferentially rotated to the left. Across Ss, the strength of rotational bias was positively related to the incidence of right-eyed looking. Rotational bias was not related to hand preference. The finding of analogous age-dependent patterns of rotational bias in capuchins and in humans suggests that the rotational behavior of Cebus apella can be used to model an asymmetric response pattern that has been linked to development in Homo sapiens. Humans and nonhuman animals appear to share a capacity for nonverbal quantity representations. But what are the limits of these abilities? Results of previous research with human infants suggest that the ontological status of an entity as an object or a substance affects infants' ability to quantify it. We ask whether the same is true for another primate species-the New World monkey Cebus apella. We tested capuchin monkeys' ability to select the greater of two quantities of either discrete objects or a nonsolid substance. Participants performed above chance with both objects (Experiment 1) and substances (Experiment 2); in both cases, the observed performance was ratio dependent. Brown capuchin monkeys, like 4-year-old children and human-socialized chimpanzees, showed communicative and deceptive pointing in experiments in which they benefited by indicating, accurately or falsely, the location of hidden food. All 3 capuchin monkeys tested (13, 19, and 26 years old) pointed communicatively in the presence of a cooperative trainer. One human-reared monkey pointed without any training and frequently gazed at her human respondent; as with apes, extensive exposure to humans may promote some human-like responses in monkeys. Another capuchin withheld pointing when beneficial, whereas the 3rd learned to obtain the hidden food by pointing deceptively in the presence of a competitive trainer. Such deceptive pointing by one monkey and withholding of information by another suggest that primates' deceptive pointing in an experimental situation is explainable in terms of response inhibition and conditional discrimination learning. Social learning in 11 human-raised capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) was investigated using an artificial fruit that was designed as an analogue of natural foraging problems faced by primates. Each subject observed a human model open each of 3 principal components on the fruit in 1 of 2 alternative ways ("morphs"). The capuchin monkeys reproduced, to differing extents, the alternative techniques used for opening 1 component of the task (poking vs. pulling while twisting out a pair of smooth plastic bolts) but not the other 2. From the subjects' actions on the bolt latch, independent coders could recognize which morph they had witnessed, and they observed a degree of matching to the demonstrator's act consistent with simple imitation or object movement reenactment (A learns from watching B how an object, or parts of an object, move). Previous evidence has suggested that analogical reasoning (recognizing similarities among object relations when the objects themselves are dissimilar) is limited to humans and apes. This study investigated whether capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) can use analogical reasoning to solve a 3-dimensional search task. The task involved hiding a food item under 1 of 2 or 3 plastic cups of different sizes and then allowing subjects to search for food hidden under the cup of analogous size in their own set of cups. Four monkeys were exposed to a series of relational matching tasks. If subjects reached criterion on these tasks, they were exposed to relational transfer tasks involving novel stimuli. Three of the monkeys failed to reach criterion on the basic relational matching tasks and therefore were not tested further. One monkey, however, revealed above-chance performance on a series of transfer tasks with 3 novel stimuli. This evidence suggests that contrary to previous arguments, a member of a New World monkey species can solve an analogical problem. Hand preferences in 26 capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) were examined in 2 reaching-for-food tasks under 2 postural conditions. In the 1st task (unimanual), monkeys were required to reach for food from both a quadrupedal and an upright posture. A right-hand bias was found for the upright but not for the quadrupedal condition. In the 2nd task (coordinated bimanual), monkeys were required to extract the food from a hanging Plexiglas tube from both a crouched and an upright posture. A right-hand bias was found for both conditions. A significant increase in right-hand use was noted from the unimanual, quadrupedal, reaching task to the coordinated-bimanual task, with females exhibiting a greater right-hand preference than males. In addition, a significant effect of task complexity on strength in laterality was found. Results are discussed in the context of recent theories on primate laterality. The authors tested free-ranging New World monkeys (nocturnal owl monkeys [Aotus nancymai] and diurnal capuchin monkeys [Cebus apella]) to determine the extent to which they use olfactory cues to locate food hidden in containers at 2 of 6 feeding sites within a 1?-ha forested enclosure. These 2 sites were selected randomly for each trial and then were baited with banana and banana peel residue. The 4 other sites were unbaited and unscented. In trials in which the food was not visible to the monkeys, Aotus monkeys located the baited sites at a level greater than expected by chance, whereas Cebus monkeys did not. Use of olfactory information by Aotus monkeys in foraging may be an adaptation for nocturnal foraging because olfactory cues are more salient than visual cues at low light levels. Patterns of manual preference and the extent to which preference provided a benefit in performance (movement time) were evaluated in 7 young adult capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella). Directions of preference were inconsistent within individual animals across home-cage activities, unimanual, and bimanual experimental tasks. Preferences were more strongly expressed in the experimental tasks than in the home cage. A left bias in the population for prehension, predicted by recent theories, was not evident in any setting. Movement time was moderately negatively correlated with degree of preference within experimental tasks. The benefit to performance conferred by lateral preference was not dependent on whether the right or the left hand was preferred. Lateralization of prehension appears to be a flexible process in these monkeys, which can result in quickly realized benefits in some conditions. In three experiments using person and nonperson slides, 7 monkeys (Cebus apella) transferred differential responding significantly to new instances of the person concept on their first exposure to the test slides. The number of exemplars with which the monkeys had experience before the emergence of significant first-trial transfer ranged from 20 to 100. In Experiment 4, 3 of the 7 monkeys were tested with a different collection of person/nonperson slides. Their high rates of transfer indicated that the results of Experiments 1–3 were not limited to the set of slides used in those studies. Despite this strong evidence for representation of the person concept, detailed analysis of the monkeys' errors raised serious questions about the degree to which their transfer behavior was governed by conceptual processes. Search is a serial exploration of alternatives. Efficient search involves the ability to minimize costs (i.e., time/energy) and to keep track of alternatives already explored. The search abilities of 4 capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) were evaluated by means of an apparatus featuring a set of suspended baited containers. The experiment featured conditions with different spatial configurations of the search space. Results show that the monkeys were able to search exhaustively 9 containers spatially distributed either as a 3?×?3 matrix or as 3 "patches" of 3 containers each. Search efficiency was higher in a search space suitable to organization in clusters or spatial chunks. In this condition, evidence for principled organization of search trajectories, as opposed to a random walk through the search space, emerges clearly and parallels search efficiency. Capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) were tested on a reverse-reward task involving different quantities of the same food, or an identical quantity of different foods. All monkeys tested first on the qualitative version spontaneously mastered the task, whereas only one of four spontaneously mastered the quantitative version. No monkey reached criterion when the tasks were switched, although almost all did so following remedial procedures after the study. The results suggest that (a) qualitative reverse-reward is easier than quantitative versions of the problem, (b) quality and quantity dimensions are processed differently in food-related tasks, and (c) capuchin monkeys can show rapid and spontaneous learning of reverse-reward contingencies. To identify behaviors related to acquisition of tool-use in tufted capuchins (Cebus apella), we presented two tool-using tasks to two groups, extending findings by Westergaard and Fragaszy (1987) and Visalberghi (in press). Five Ss learned to use the tools in each task. The primary predictor of success was level of interest in the task. Observation of others at the apparatus did not facilitate exploratory behaviors or contact with the tools in the observers. Most animals performed exploratory behaviors more often when they were at the apparatus alone than when with another, whether or not the other was using a tool. Observers were quick to learn the relationship between another's activities and the appearance of food. We conclude that capuchins do not readily learn about instrumental relations by observation of others or imitate other's acts. Four tufted capuchin monkeys, successful in a tool task in which they used a stick to push a reward out of a tube, were tested in a similar task, with a tube with a hole and a small trap. Depending on where the stick was inserted, the reward was pushed either out of the tube or into the trap. With the trap-tube task, the authors assessed whether the monkeys understood the cause–effect relation between their behavior and the outcome. In Exp 1, each S underwent 14 10-trial blocks with the trap tube. Three Ss performed at chance level. The 4th S's (Rb) performance improved, reaching 95% success in the last 6 blocks. In Exp 2, Rb received additional tests to investigate its successful strategy further. Rb solved the trap-tube task by means of a distance-based, associative rule. Foraging choices in tufted capuchins monkeys are guided by perceptual, cognitive, and motivational factors, but little is known about how these factors might interact. The present study investigates how different types of sensory information affect capuchins' ability to locate hidden food. In two experiments, capuchins were presented with two cups, one baited and one empty. Monkeys were given visual, acoustic, or acoustic-visual information related to the baited cup, the empty cup, or both baited and empty cup. Results show that capuchins spontaneously used visual information to locate food, and that information indicating presence and absence of food led to higher success rates than information indicating only absence of food. In contrast, acoustic information did not lead to success rates above chance levels and failed to enhance performance in combination with visual information. Capuchins spontaneously avoided a visually empty cup, but they did not appear to associate sounds with either the presence or absence of food. Being able to locate food items with the aid of acoustic cues might be a learned process that requires interactive experiences with the task's contingencies.
