How Students Learn Statistics Revisited: A Current Review of Research on Teaching and Learning Statistics

This paper provides an overview of current research on teaching and learning statistics, summarizing studies that have been conducted by researchers from different disciplines and focused on students at all levels. The review is organized by general research questions addressed, and suggests what can be learned from the results of each of these questions. The implications of the research are described in terms of eight principles for learning statistics from Garfield (1995) which are revisited in the light of results from current studies.

Nonparametric Efficiency Analysis under Price Uncertainty: A First-Order Stochastic Dominance Approach

This paper extends the nonparametric approach to efficiency analysis to deal with uncertainty of input-output prices. We generalize the notion of economic efficiency to derive necessary and sufficient first-order stochastic dominance (FSD) efficiency conditions. Interestingly, the FSD conditions include as limiting cases the traditional conditions for economic efficiency and technical efficiency. Furthermore, we propose empirical tests for these FSD conditions, which require minimal assumptions concerning the preferences of the decision-maker and the statistical distribution of the prices. From operational point of view, the FSD conditions can be tested empirically using standard mathematical programming techniques. An empirical application to the Dutch electricity distribution sector illustrates the approach.

Women in the Statistics Profession: A Status Report

The mandate of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) is to foster international statistical work and interchange among statisticians and countries. However, women are under-represented in the ISI and this situation is a cause for concern in the Institute and its membership and particularly the ISI Committee on Women in Statistics (CWS). This paper analyses the representation of women in the ISI and in the statistics profession which is low in virtually every country, a pattern of generations. It looks at the diverse realities among countries and regions, and the broader context of women working in the scientific professions.

货币政策传导机制素有货币渠道和信贷渠道之分.我国GDP受到货币供应量和贷款余额的共同影响,在两个标准差的货币政策变量冲击下,贷款余额对我国GDP的影响大于货币供应量,而随着时间的推移,货币渠道的影响在逐渐加大,信贷渠道的影响则相对减弱.     

The Current Position of Statistics: A Personal View

Some current aspects of statistical work are reviewed under three broad headings, applied probability modelling, design of investigations and statistical analysis and interpretation of data. The emphasis is on applications in science and science-based technology, although some incidental comments are made about statistics in public affairs. While no technical details are given, there is some discussion of potential fields for development. The choice of topics reflects the author's personal interests.

针对随机型库存系统的仿真研究

库存是物流管理中各种资源储备的客观现象,通常库存的总费用包括订货费、存货费和缺货费。文中针对传统存储模型所无法求解的离散问题,通过改进经典的随机排队系统的仿真模型,建立了适应于库存系统的仿真模型,并将随机性的因素引入其中,这些因素包括:商品的需求量、需求间隔、延误交货时间。另外,模型对需求随时间的变化,也进行了计算机的模拟,并以存储的总费用作为指标,来评价库存策略的优劣。文中的最后部分,针对最优存储策略,通过采用计算机独立重复模拟的方法得到了模拟的结果,并采用点估计和区间估计的方法对这些数据进行分析。     

A Special Gen(d)re of Statistics: Roots,Development and Methodological Prospects of Gender Statistics

The very expression Gender Statistics calls for a double interpretation. It accounts for the popular mix‐up of statistical methodology with its typical products such as indexes, tables and graphs. At the same time it implies a broader and forward‐looking perspective, which is inspired by the increasing demand of gender sensitive statistical information coming from society, official agencies, economy. Gender statistics stands as a proper independent field of statistics with its own objectives and a variety of applications in social, human and life science. Concurrently an emerging necessity of appropriate equipment of methods and dissemination tools is noticeable. The paper tracks the roots and the historical development of gender statistics, reviews critically the existing indexes and practice and outlines methodological needs and research prospects.
