We examine the effect of local thermal non-equilibrium on the steady state heat conduction in a porous layer in the presence of internal heat generation. A uniform source of heat is present in either the fluid or the solid phase. A two-temperature model is assumed and analytical solutions are presented for the resulting steady-state temperature profiles in a uniform porous slab. Attention is then focussed on deriving simple conditions which guarantee local thermal equilibrium.

An approach to describe heat transfer in porous media is presented on the basis of the continuous time random walk (CTRW) framework. CTRW is capable of quantifying both local equilibrium and non-equilibrium heat transfer in heterogeneous domains, and is shown here to match published experimental data of non-equilibrium thermal breakthrough. It is argued that CTRW will be particularly applicable to the quantification of heat transfer in naturally heterogeneous geological systems, such as soils and geothermal reservoirs.

In acid fracturing, excessive acid leakoff is thought to be the main reason that limits fracture propagation and live acid penetration distance. Since most carbonates are naturally fractured, we developed a new model in this paper to simulate acid leakoff into a naturally fractured carbonate oil reservoir during acid fracturing. Our model incorporates the acid-rock reaction, fracture width variation due to rock dissolution on the fractured surfaces, and fluid flow in naturally fractured carbonate oil reservoirs. Given the information of the reservoir, injected acid, and pressure in the hydraulic facture and the reservoir, the model predicts acid leakoff with time. In this study, we found that acid leakoff mechanism in naturally fractured carbonates is much different from that in reservoirs without natural fractures. Widened natural fractures by acid-rock reaction act as high-conductivity conduits allowing leakoff acid to penetrate deeper into the formation, resulting in serious leakoff. Wide natural fractures have a dominant effect on acid leakoff compared to micro-fractures and matrix.

Most of the developed models for fractured reservoirs assume ideal matrix block size distribution. This assumption may not be valid in reality for naturally fractured reservoirs and possibly lead to errors in prediction of production from the naturally fractured reservoirs especially during a transient period or early time production from the matrix blocks. In this study, we investigate the effect of variable block size distribution on one- dimensional flow of compressible fluids in fractured reservoirs. The effect of different matrix block size distributions on the single phase matrix-fracture transfer is studied using a recently developed semi-analytical approach. The proposed model is able to simulate fluid exchange between matrix and fracture for continuous or discrete block size distributions using probability density functions or structural information of a fractured formation. The presented semi-analytical model demonstrates a good accuracy compared to the numerical results. There have been recent attempts to consider the effect of variable block size distribution in naturally fractured reservoir modeling for slightly compressible fluids with a constant viscosity and compressibility. The main objective of this study is to consider the effect of variable block size distribution on a one-dimensional matrix-fracture transfer function for single-phase flow of a compressible fluid in fractured porous media. In the proposed semi-analytical model, the pressure variability of viscosity and isothermal compressibility is considered by solving the nonlinear partial differential equation of compressible fluid flow in the fractured media. The closed form solution provided can be applied to flow of compressible fluids with variable matrix block size distribution in naturally fractured gas reservoirs.

A local thermal non-equilibrium model has been considered for the case of thermally fully developed flow within a constant heat flux tube filled with a porous medium. Exact temperature profiles for the fluid and solid phases are found after combining the two individual energy equations and then transforming them into a single ordinary differential equation with respect to the temperature difference between the solid phase and the wall subject to constant heat flux. The exact solutions for the case of metal-foam and air combination reveal that the local thermal equilibrium assumption may fail for the case of constant heat flux wall. The Nusselt number is presented as a function of the Peclet number, which shows a significant increase due to both high stagnant thermal conductivity and thermal dispersion resulting from the presence of the metal-foam.

The stability of a horizontal fluid saturated anisotropic porous layer heated from below and cooled from above is examined analytically when the solid and fluid phases are not in local thermal equilibrium. Darcy model with anisotropic permeability is employed to describe the flow and a two-field model is used for energy equation each representing the solid and fluid phases separately. The linear stability theory is implemented to compute the critical Rayleigh number and the corresponding wavenumber for the onset of convective motion. The effect of thermal non-equilibrium and anisotropy in both mechanical and thermal properties of the porous medium on the onset of convection is discussed. Besides, asymptotic analysis for both very small and large values of the interphase heat transfer coefficient is also presented. An excellent agreement is found between the exact and asymptotic solutions. Some known results, which correspond to thermal equilibrium and isotropic porous medium, are recovered in limiting cases.

Fractures and faults are common features of many well-known reservoirs. They create traps, serve as conduits to oil and gas migration, and can behave as barriers or baffles to fluid flow. Naturally fractured reservoirs consist of fractures in igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary rocks (matrix), and formations. In most sedimentary formations both fractures and matrix contribute to flow and storage, but in igneous and metamorphic rocks only fractures contribute to flow and storage, and the matrix has almost zero permeability and porosity. In this study, we present a mesh-free semianalytical solution for pressure transient behavior in a 2D infinite reservoir containing a network of discrete and/or connected finite- and infinite-conductivity fractures. The proposed solution methodology is based on an analytical-element method and thus can be easily extended to incorporate other reservoir features such as sealing or leaky faults, domains with altered petrophysical properties (for example, fluid permeability or reservoir porosity), and complicated reservoir boundaries. It is shown that the pressure behavior of discretely fractured reservoirs is considerably different from the well-known Warren and Root dual-porosity reservoir model behavior. The pressure behavior of discretely fractured reservoirs shows many different flow regimes depending on fracture distribution, its intensity and conductivity. In some cases, they also exhibit a dual-porosity reservoir model behavior.

This paper uses thermal non-equilibrium model to study transient heat transfer by natural convection of a nanofluid over a vertical wavy surface. The model used for the nanofluid incorporates the effects of Brownian motion and thermophoresis. Three-temperature model is applied to represent the local thermal non-equilibrium among the particle, fluid, and solid-matrix phases. Finite difference method is used to solve the dimensionless governing equations of the problem. The obtained results are displayed in 2D graphs to illustrate the influences of the different physical parameters on local skin-friction coefficient, local Nusselt numbers for fluid, particle and solid phases and local Sherwood number. The results for velocity component, nanoparticle volume fraction, fluid temperature, particle temperature and solid-matrix temperature are presented in 3D graphs as a function of the axial and transverse coordinates. All the obtained results are discussed.

Based on the two-energy equation model, taking into account viscous dissipation due to the interaction between solid skeleton and pore fluid flow, temperature expressions of the solid skeleton and pore fluid flow are obtained analytically for the thermally developing forced convection in a saturated porous medium parallel plate channel, with walls being at constant temperature. It is proved that the temperatures of the two phases for the local thermal nonequilibrium approach to the temperature derived from the one-energy equation model for the local thermal equilibrium when the heat exchange coefficient goes to infinite. The temperature profiles are shown in figures for different dimensionless parameters and the effects of the parameters on the local thermal nonequilibrium are revealed by parameter study.

The pore and pore-throat sizes of shale and tight rock formations are on the order of tens of nanometers. The fluid flow in such small pores is significantly affected by walls of pores and pore-throats. This boundary layer effect on fluid flow in tight rocks has been investigated through laboratory work on capillary tubes. It is observed that low permeability is associated with large boundary layer effect on fluid flow. The experimental results from a single capillary tube are extended to a bundle of tubes and finally to porous media of tight formations. A physics-based, non-Darcy low-velocity flow equation is derived to account for the boundary layer effect of tight reservoirs by adding a non-Darcy coefficient term. This non-Darcy equation describes the fluid flow more accurately for tight oil reservoir with low production rate and low pressure gradient. Both analytical and numerical solutions are obtained for the new non-Darcy flow model. First, a Buckley–Leverett-type analytical solution is derived with this non-Darcy flow equation. Then, a numerical model has been developed for implementing this non-Darcy flow model for accurate simulation of multidimensional porous and fractured tight oil reservoirs. Finally, the numerical studies on an actual field example in China demonstrate the non-negligible effect of boundary layer on fluid flow in tight formations.

A numerical method as well as a theoretical study of non-Darcy fluid flow through porous and fractured reservoirs is described. The non-Darcy behavior is handled in a three-dimensional, multiphase flow reservoir simulator, while the model formulation incorporates the Forchheimer equation for describing single-phase or multiphase non-Darcy flow and displacement. The non-Darcy flow through a fractured reservoir is handled using a general dual-continuum approach. The numerical scheme has been verified by comparing its results against those of analytical methods. Numerical solutions are used to obtain some insight into the physics of non-Darcy flow and displacement in reservoirs. In addition, several type curves are provided for well-test analyses of non-Darcy flow to demonstrate a methodology for modeling this type of flow in porous and fractured rocks, including flow in petroleum and geothermal reservoirs.

The two-equation model in porous media can describe the local thermal non-equilibrium (LTNE) effects between fluid and solid at REV scale, with the temperature differences in a solid particle neglected. A multi-scale model has been proposed in this study. In the model, the temperature differences in a solid particle are considered by the coupling of the fluid energy equation at REV scale with the heat conduction equation of a solid particle at pore scale. The experiments were conducted to verify the model and numerical strategy. The multi-scale model is more suitable than the two-equation model to predict the LTNE effects in porous media with small thermal conductivity. The effects of particle diameter, mass flow rate, and solid material on the LTNE effects have been investigated numerically when cryogenic nitrogen flows through the porous bed with small thermal conductivity. The results indicate that the temperature difference between solid center and fluid has the same trend at different particle diameters and mass flow rates, while the time to reach the local thermal equilibrium is affected by solid diameter dramatically. The results also show that the temperature difference between solid center and surface is much greater than that between solid surface and fluid. The values of \( \rho {\text{c}} \) for different materials have important influence on the time to reach the local thermal equilibrium between solid and fluid.

Buoyant flow in a fluid-saturated porous vertical slab with isothermal and permeable boundaries is performed. Two reservoirs, maintained at different uniform temperatures, confine the slab. The permeable plane boundaries of the slab are modelled by imposing a condition of hydrostatic pressure. Darcy’s law and the Oberbeck–Boussinesq approximation are employed. The hypothesis of local thermal equilibrium between the fluid and the solid phase is relaxed. A two-temperature model is adopted, so that two local energy balance equations govern the heat transfer in the porous slab. The basic stationary buoyant flow consists of a single convective cell of infinite height. The time evolution of normal mode perturbations superposed onto the basic state is investigated in order to determine the onset conditions for thermal instability. A pressure–temperature formulation is employed. Major asymptotic cases are investigated. It is shown that departure from local thermal equilibrium implies in general a destabilisation of the basic stationary flow.

On Vaporizing Water Flow in Hot Sub-Vertical Rock Fractures
Water injection into unsaturated fractured rock at above-boiling temperatures gives rise to complex fluid flow and heat transfer processes. Examples include water injection into depleted vapor-dominated geothermal reservoirs, and emplacement of heat-generating nuclear wastes in unsaturated fractured rock. We conceptualize fractures as two-dimensional heterogeneous porous media, and use geostatistical techniques to generate synthetic permeability distributions in the fracture plane. Water flow in hot high-angle fractures is simulated numerically, taking into account the combined action of gravity, capillary, and pressure forces, and conductive heat transfer from the wall rocks which gives rise to strong vaporization. In heterogeneous fractures boiling plumes are found to have dendritic shapes, and to be subject to strong lateral flow effects. Fractures with spatially-averaged homogeneous permeabilities tend to give poor approximations for vaporization behavior and liquid migration patterns. Depending on water flow rates, rock temperature, and fracture permeability, liquid water can migrate considerable distances through fractured rock that is at above-boiling temperatures and be only partially vaporized.

Acidizing technology has been widely applied when developing naturally fractured–vuggy reservoirs. So testing and evaluating acidizing wells’ pressure behavior become necessary for further improving the wells’ performance. Analyzing transient pressure data can estimate some key reservoir parameters. Generally speaking, carbonate minerals are usually composed of dolomite and calcite which are easy to be dissolved by hydrochloric acid which is often used to react with the rock to create a high conductivity channel, namely wormhole. Pressure transient behavior in fractured–vuggy reservoirs has been studied for many years; however, the models of acidizing wells with wormholes were not reported in previous studies. This article presented an analytical model for wormholes in naturally fractured–vuggy carbonate reservoirs, and wormholes solutions were obtained through point sink integral method. The results were validated accurately by comparing with previous results and numerical simulation. Then in this paper, type curves were established to recognize the flow characteristics, and flow was divided into six flow regimes comprehensively. The calculative results showed that the characteristics of type curves were influenced by inter-porosity flow factor, wormhole number, fluids capacitance coefficient. We also showed that the pressure behavior was affected by the angles between wormholes, and the pressure depletion increased as the angle decreased, because the wormholes were closer, their interaction became stronger. At the end, a reservoir example was showed to demonstrate the methodology of new type curve analysis.

In this paper, the thermo-poroelasticity theory is used to investigate the quasi-static response of temperatures, pore pressure, stress, displacement, and fluid flux around a cylindrical borehole subjected to impact thermal and mechanical loadings in an infinite saturated poroelastic medium. It has been reported in literatures that coupled flow known as thermo-osmosis by which flux is driven by temperature gradient, can significantly change the fluid flux in clay, argillaceous and many other porous materials whose permeability coefficients are very small. This study presents a mathematical model to investigate the coupled effect of thermo-osmosis in saturated porous medium. The energy balance equations presented here fulfill local thermal non-equilibrium condition (LTNE) which is different from the local thermal equilibrium transfer theory, accounting for that temperatures of solid and fluid phases are not the same and governed by different heat transfer equations. Analytical solutions of temperatures, pore pressure, stress, displacement, and fluid flux are obtained in Laplace transform space. Numerical results for a typical clay are used to investigate the effect of thermo-osmosis. The effects of LTNE on temperatures, pore pressure, and stress are also studied in this paper.
