Performance of Traditional and Web-Based EDI

This article examines three categories of companies with regard to electronic data interchange (EDI) usage: (1) companies that use no EDI at all, (2) companies that use traditional EDI, and (3) companies that use Web-based EDI. Performance is examined for these three types of companies using the following dimensions: process cost; operational efficiency; customer satisfaction, coordination, cooperation, and commitment between EDI partners; and overall performance. Results show that companies using Web-based EDI experience superior performance in commitment between EDI partners as well as overall performance, while companies using Web-based or traditional EDI experience superior performance in internal operational efficiency as well as overall performance.     

Electronic data interchange: a multi-industry investigation using grounded theory

Interorganizational systems (IOS) based on electronic data interchange (EDI) are being increasingly used. However, trading partners in EDI-based IOS vary in terms of their extent of EDI use. This paper presents a grounded-theory based study of EDI use in four organizations in different industries. The methodology allows the study of EDI use from perspectives of causal conditions, types of EDI use, strategies for encouraging EDI use, consequences of EDI use, and contextual factors. Such a qualitative study facilitates an understanding of how and why different factors impact EDI use. Under-researched issues, such as internal use of EDI, impact of EDI on different types of employees, and use of EDI for collective benefit of multiple organizations are discussed.     

Factors affecting the implementation of electronic data interchange in Korea

Although there have been a number of studies of the determinant factors of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) implementation, most studies were carried out in the United States or Europe. The purpose of this study is to identify the determinant factors which affect implementation of EDI systems by Korean companies. Decentralization, EDI standards, technical compatibility, technical support by EDI vendors, education and training and participation of trading partners positively affect the extent of EDI usage. Formalization, technical compatibility, user involvement and participation of trading partners affect EDI integration with internal applications. Top management support and the participation of trading partners promote the extent of EDI operations. This study provides evidence of the effect of important determinant factors such as participation of trading partners and technical compatibility replicating previous EDI studies conducted in that US and Europe. For policy makers ad EDI developers, this study provides insights as to appropriate measures and incentives system designed to encourage EDI and B2B implementation.

The impact of EDI implementation commitment and implementation success on competitive advantage and firm performance

Abstract. Electronic Data Interchange Systems (EDI) are increasingly being used by business firms to improve operations and customer service. One of the major motivations for business organizations using EDI is to gain a strategic advantage in the marketplace. Although EDI has been implemented by many organizations, unfortunately not all have gained the same level of expected advantage or envisioned benefits.
In this study we focus on the impact of EDI implementation commitment and implementation success on competitive advantage and firm performance. We study two categories of companies: companies that initiate the development of EDI and are known as hub companies and those that are their non-hub counterparts. Findings indicate that non-hub firms may not reap the same level of expected benefits resulting from EDI technology adoption and implementation as hub firms.

The relationship among formal EDI controls,knowledge of EDI controls,and EDI performance

As new technologies and software applications are supplanting traditional electronic data interchange (EDI) applications, new fraud concerns due to the ubiquitous connectivity of the Internet have increased the interest in EDI controls. Traditional outcome (or process)-oriented views of (formal) control should be supplemented by knowledge management considerations, and user knowledge of contents control and its importance should be enhanced in order to maximize performance. This research addresses the indirect effect of EDI control usage levels on EDI performance through knowledge enhancement. EDI controls were categorized as internal and third-party in order to highlight their internal and external aspects in inter-organizational systems. Knowledge of controls has two parts: knowledge of control content and an understanding of control importance. The research model was empirically tested using a structural equation modeling approach with data collected from Korean companies that have adopted EDI. The results indicate that knowledge plays an important role in mediating the effect of controls on performance. That is, EDI adopters can achieve operational and competitive benefits from high levels of knowledge in relation to control content and its importance.     

Managing EDI for corporate advantage: A longitudinal study

This research attempts to identify the benefits that organizations gain by using EDI, the conditions under which these advantages can be attained, and their variation with time. Using a longitudinal design, 65 Canadian organizations were surveyed twice over a three-year period. In phase 1, factors such as the organizational support, the implementation process, the control procedures, and the integration of EDI were found to be positively related to the attainment of EDI advantages whereas, the imposition of EDI by business partners had a negative effect. In phase 2, the implementation process and the imposition of EDI lost their importance, imposition having only a positive effect on the organizational context. The reasons for these changes are discussed.
