The objective of the present study was to evaluate whether immunosuppression occurs in 3 different Greek dairy sheep breeds during the periparturient period. A total of 33 ewes from 3 breeds [i.e., the low-producing Boutsiko breed (n = 11), which is highly adaptable to harsh environments; the high-producing but environmentally fragile Chios breed (n = 11); and an intermediate synthetic breed (50% Boutsiko, 25% Arta, and 25% Chios, n = 11)] were used. Blood samples were collected at 18 and 2 d before parturition and at 15 d after parturition. Total cell-associated and membrane-bound urokinase plasminogen activator (U-PA) activity, free U-PA binding sites on cellular membranes, and superoxide anion (SA) production by activated phagocytes were determined. Results indicated that all immune parameters measured remained constant during the periparturient period for the Boutsiko breed. In contrast, there were reductions in total cell-associated and membrane-bound U-PA activity by both monocytes-macrophages and neutrophils and in SA production by monocytes-macrophages at d 2 before parturition for the Chios breed. In the synthetic breed, there were reductions in total cell-associated and membrane-bound U-PA activity by monocytes-macrophages and in SA production by both monocytes-macrophages and neutrophils at d 15 after parturition. Thus, mild immunosuppression during the periparturient period was observed in the 2 breeds with the highest milk production.  相似文献

Twenty-four lactating ewes (Manchega, n = 12; Lacaune, n = 12) in mid lactation were used to assess the short-term effects of different machine milking intervals (4, 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24 h) on milk yield, milk composition, and tight junction (TJ) permeability of mammary epithelia. Milk samples were analyzed for chemical composition, somatic cell count (SCC), and plasmin activity. Plasma lactose, and milk Na and K concentrations were used as indicators of TJ permeability. Milk accumulated linearly for up to 24 h, showing a different rate according to the milk yield of the breed (Manchega, 38 mL/h; Lacaune, 87 mL/h). Milking interval affected milk fat content, which decreased markedly from 4 to 24 h in both breeds, but no differences were observed in milk protein content. The milk contents of casein, true protein, lactose, and total solids also varied according to milking interval. Values of SCC did not vary by breed (175 × 103 cells/mL, on average), showing the lowest log10 values for the 4-and 24-h milking intervals in both breeds. Plasmin activity in milk increased with milking interval until 20 h of udder filling in both breeds, and was poorly but positively correlated with SCC content (r = 0.39). Plasma lactose increased dramatically after 20 h of milk accumulation, indicating enhanced permeability of mammary TJ. As a result, an increase in Na concentration and in the Na:K ratio, and a decrease in K concentration, were observed in the milk of Manchega ewes. On the contrary, no differences in Na and K concentrations in milk were detected in Lacaune ewes. In conclusion, our results proved that Manchega and Lacaune dairy sheep could maintain high rates of milk secretion during extended milking intervals in the short term, with no effects on udder health and few negative effects on milk yield. Increased TJ permeability, caused by the effect of udder filling, induced changes in milk composition that were more marked in Manchega than in Lacaune ewes.  相似文献

The long- and the short-term effects of omitting 2 milkings weekly in early (wk 8 to 14) and mid lactation (wk 15 to 22) were investigated in an experiment conducted with a total of 58 dairy ewes (40 Manchega and 18 Lacaune). Ewes submitted to 2 milking omissions were milked twice daily from Monday to Friday (0800 and 1800 h), and once daily on Saturday and Sunday (1600 and 1400 h, respectively). Individual data were collected for milk yield (weekly), milk composition (biweekly), and somatic cell count (SCC; monthly). Omitting 2 milkings per week in early lactation tended to decrease milk yield in Manchega ewes (−15%), whereas no effects were observed in Lacaune ewes. Averaged milk composition was not modified by milking omissions in either breed. Milking omissions in late lactation did not affect milk yield and milk composition in either breed. The SCC were unaffected by milking omissions in both breeds and in both stages of lactation. A sample of 22 Manchega and 11 Lacaune ewes were used to evaluate the short-term (daily) effects of the 2 milking omissions per week on milk yield and composition, udder health, and tight junction permeability, both in early lactation (wk 12) and in mid lactation (wk 20). Milking omission decreased milk yield, milk fat, and milk lactose contents on the first omission day in both breeds, with losses being more noticeable in early lactation than in mid lactation. Milk protein content and SCC did not vary by effect of the weekend milking omissions. After restoring the twice-daily milking routine on Monday, milk yield showed a compensatory increase that was greater in the large-cisterned than in the small-cisterned ewes, which allowed milk yield to return to Friday values in both breeds. Milk fat content increased during Sunday and Monday, reestablishing Friday values thereafter in both breeds. Weekend milking omissions in early lactation caused tight junction leakiness in both breeds, but mammary epithelia adapted to extended milking intervals when applied successively, recovering their tight state after milking. In mid lactation, the mammary tight junction showed leakiness only in Manchega ewes. In conclusion, 2 milkings per week could be omitted with no negative effects on milk yield, milk composition, and milk SCC values in large-cisterned dairy ewes, as observed in Lacaune and large-cisterned Manchega ewes. Losses in milk yield could be reduced if milking omissions were done from mid lactation in small-cisterned ewes.  相似文献

A total of 225 bulk sheep milk samples were collected from 5 intensively managed flocks during early, mid, and late lactation to assess the contribution of macrophages to the regulation of the plasmin-plasminogen system. Samples were analyzed for composition, somatic cell counts, milk renneting characteristics, and for plasmin (PL), plasminogen (PG), and plasminogen activators (PA) activities. Isolation of macrophages from milk was performed using a magnetic positive separation and mouse antiovine macrophage antibody; separated cells were lysed by several freeze-thaw cycles, and activity of urokinase PA (u-PA) was determined. Plasmin activity decreased during lactation (42.06 ± 0.66, early; 31.29 ± 0.66, mid; 28.19 ± 0.66 U/mL, late). The reduction in PL activity recorded in the mid and late lactation milk matched the increase in PG:PL ratio. The activity of PA increased throughout lactation; the highest value being recorded in the late lactation milk (260.20 ± 8.66 U/mL). Counts of isolated and concentrated macrophages were higher in early and mid lactation milk (3.89 ± 0.08 and 3.98 ± 0.08 log10 cells/mL, respectively) than in late lactation milk (3.42 ± 0.08 log10 cells/mL). Stage of lactation did not influence the activity of u-PA detected in isolated macrophages. The activity of u-PA associated with isolated milk macrophages only minimally contributed to total PA activity detected in milk. Proteolytic enzymes, associated with isolated macrophages, act on α-casein hydrolysis, as shown by urea-PAGE electrophoresis analysis. Somatic cell counts did not exceed 600,000 cells/mL, and this threshold can be considered a good index of health status of the flock and of the ability of milk to being processed. Our results lend support to the hypothesis that macrophages in ewe bulk milk from healthy flocks only slightly contribute to the activation of the PL-PG system.  相似文献

It is necessary to identify traits that are simple to measure and correlated with milk yield to select ewes for dairying from existing populations of sheep in Australia. We studied 217 primiparous and 113 multiparous (second parity, n = 51; third parity, n = 40; and fourth parity, n = 22) East Friesian crossbred ewes, for 2 consecutive lactations, that were milked by machine following a period of suckling (24 to 28 d). We measured lamb growth, milk production, milk yield, and residual milk during early lactation (<d 60 of lactation) to test whether milk production during the suckling period or the growth rate of the lamb predicts milk yield. Milk production at weaning, or the amount of residual milk, or both, predict milk yield within lactations. These measures also predict milk yield between lactations. Lambs were weighed at birth and weaning and milk production in ewes was measured using a 4-h milk production test at d 5 of lactation and at weaning. Following weaning, ewes were milked twice daily and milk yield was recorded weekly for 8 wk and once a month thereafter. Milk production (using a 16-h milk production test) and residual milk were measured at weaning, and again 1 wk and 4 wk later. Milk yield to 120 d was correlated (r2 = 0.39) between lactations, and 120-d milk yield (primiparous 82.7 ± 2.0 L; multiparous 107.1 ± 4.2 L; second lactation 146 ± 3.7 L) can be predicted after 4 wk of machine milking using a single measurement of either daily milk yield (primiparous 770 ± 25 mL/d; multiparous 940 ± 44 mL/d; second lactation 1,372 ± 46 mL/d, r2 = 0.60 to 0.65) or daily milk production (primiparous 1,197 ± 27 mL/d; multiparous 1,396 ± 62 mL/d; second lactation 1,707 ± 45 mL/d, r2 = 0.50 to 0.53). Residual milk in primiparous ewes (38%) and multiparous ewes (34%) was high (292 ± 11 and 321 ± 20 mL, respectively) in the first lactation, but lower (17%) in the second lactation (238 ± 17 mL). Residual milk and 120-d milk yield were not correlated in either lactation and we suggest that the transfer of milk from the alveoli to the cistern between each milking may be an important mechanism that maintains milk yield in these ewes.  相似文献

Tinerfeñ a breed goats were assigned to 2 experimental herds and milked once (n = 28) or twice (n = 24) daily to study correlations between udder morphology, milk yield, and milking ability during the middle stage of the first lactation. Pearson correlation coefficients were significantly higher between yield and measures of udder globulousness (udder volume, r = 0.79 and r = 0.59; perimeter of insertion of the udder, r = 0.47 and r = 0.37; distance between teats, r = 0.77 and r = 0.28, for goats milked once and twice daily, respectively) than for length parameters (cistern floor distance, r = 0.40 and r = −0.29; udder depth, r = −0.20 and r = 0.20). The globulousness of the udder was correlated with easier milking ability, as shown by milk fractioning (r = 0.49 to 0.70) and milk flow measures (r = 0.32 to 0.49). The results showed that the globulousness of the udder is more important than length measurements in assessing milk yield and milking ability.  相似文献

Sarda (n = 8), Awassi (n = 8), and Merino (n = 8) ewes were subjected unilaterally to once-daily milking (ODM) or twice daily milking (TDM) to test the hypothesis that the two breeds highly selected for milk production (Sarda and Awassi) would not respond as much to a change in the frequency of milking as the Merino, a wool sheep that has not been selected for dairy production. Milk composition and somatic cell count (SCC) were also assessed to determine if the changes in milking frequency affected milk quality. Milk yield was 24% and 18% lower in ODM udder halves than TDM udder halves in Sarda and Awassi breeds, respectively. The yield loss due to ODM was similar to that observed in Merino ewes (23%) and did not support our hypothesis. Fat content did not differ significantly in any breeds between ODM and TDM udder halves. Protein content was higher in the milk of ODM than TDM udder halves in Sarda and Merino ewes. The SCC was influenced by milking treatment only in the Sarda ewes, with high values observed in the milk of ODM udder halves. The same trend was observed in the Awassi and Merino breeds, but the differences were not significant. The effects on milk yield, composition, and SCC caused by ODM were completely reversed when TDM was resumed. This suggests that in sheep flocks the milk yield losses due to short-time suppression of one daily milking, for example, on festive days, are low and temporary.  相似文献

A total of 25,160 milk test-day records from 2,516 cows in first lactation of 3 dairy cattle breeds [Simmental (n = 1,900), Brown Swiss (n = 444), and Tyrol Grey (n = 172)] in Kosovo were analyzed using nested repeatability and random regression test-day models with varying (co)variance structures. The different models were compared based on likelihood-based criteria. The best model was a second-order random regression model, with heterogeneous cow variance per breed and heterogeneous residual variance per lactation month and breed, which was used for further analysis. The highest milk production was found in Brown Swiss, followed by Simmental and Tyrol Grey. Substantial breed differences were found for the trajectories of cow and residual variances by month of lactation, with the highest variances found for Brown Swiss, followed by Simmental and Tyrol Grey. High cow and residual variances indicated a high degree of environmental sensitivity on the macro- and microenvironmental levels, respectively. Thus, these results indicate increased environmental sensitivity for breeds with higher genetic potential for milk production. These results support the conclusion that dairy cattle production under the current environmental conditions of Kosovo should be based on a breed with moderate production that is robust to the diet offered (e.g., Tyrol Grey).  相似文献

The experiment was conducted from March to July 2002 using 5 intensively managed flocks of Southern Italy. In each flock, 2 groups of 50 ewes were created. The groups were designated LSCC (low somatic cell count [SCC]) when their milk SCC was lower than 500,000/mL and HSCC (high SCC) when their milk SCC was higher than 1,000,000/mL. Bulk milk and whey samples were analyzed for fat, total protein, lactose, casein, and whey protein contents. Renneting properties of milk were also determined. Moisture, NaCl, and nitrogen fractions were determined in fresh cheese curds. In addition, plasmin (PL) and plasminogen (PG) activities in milk and cheese were monitored. The proteolytic activity of plasmin by urea-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and the white blood cell (WBC) differentials were determined. The HSCC resulted in higher pH values in milk and in higher moisture and lower fat contents in fresh cheese curds. Moreover, a lower recovery of fat and whey proteins was obtained from the HSCC than from the LSCC raw milk. The crude protein and casein contents were higher in the HSCC than in the LSCC curds during early and midlactation; an opposite trend was observed in late lactation. Plasmin and PG activities underwent more marked fluctuations in the LSCC than in the HSCC curds through lactation. The results of this experiment demonstrate that the PL activity in ewe milk is markedly influenced by the SCC, although SCC is not the only parameter for predicting PL and PG evolution in ewe milk. The LSCC milk resulted in a higher proteolytic potential of Canestrato pugliese cheese curds.  相似文献

In this study, the chemical and microbiological characteristics of ovine milk from three indigenous Greek breeds was assessed. The breeds selected for this study were Boutsiko, Frisarta and Karagouniko. The milk yield of each breed was recorded at the early, mid‐ and late stages of lactation for two consecutive years. Among the three breeds, the average milk compositions obtained were similar for protein, lactose and total solids; however, fat values were significantly lower in Frisarta milk compared with Boutsiko and Karagouniko milk. The major fatty acids (FAs) in ovine milk were palmitic and oleic. The microbiological quality of Boutsiko and Karagouniko milk was superior to Frisarta milk.  相似文献

Milk flow parameters at udder and quarter levels were studied in relation to somatic cell count (SCC) and other risk factors for mastitis (bimodality, duration of decline, and duration of overmilking phase). Thirty-eight Holstein cows in their first to sixth lactations were investigated during 10 mo of lactation. Monthly milk samples were collected for SCC during morning milking. Quarter and udder milk flows were recorded daily. A cow was included if one quarter was found to have an SCC higher than 200 × 103 cells/mL. A total of 3,262 quarter milk flow curves and 804 udder milk flow curves from 22 cows (6 primiparous and 16 multiparous) were selected and evaluated. Selected data for milk flow profiles in relation to SCC represented 5 consecutive morning milkings around the time of milk sampling (sampling on d 3). A total of 661 milk samples were analyzed. At both the udder and quarter levels milk yield was reduced in groups with increased SCC. Quarters with high SCC (>500 × 103 cells/mL) had lower peak flow rate and longer overmilking phases compared with quarters with low SCC (<200 × 103 cells/mL). There was a tendency for a longer duration of the decline phase in quarters with high SCC but no effect was observed at the udder level. There were longer declines in bimodal milk flows at the quarter, but not at the udder, level. Also, quarters with bimodality had longer overmilking phases. The duration of the decline phases at the quarter level influenced all measured parameters except the duration of the increase phase. The quarters with a longer duration of the decline phase (≥80 s) had greater SCC and peak flow rate but had lower milk yield compared with quarters with a shorter duration of the decline phase (<27 s). Duration of the overmilking phase influenced all measured parameters except SCC. We conclude that for good udder health, the duration of the decline phase at the quarter level should be considered for milking parameters and udder preparation before milking.  相似文献

Goat milk somatic cell counts have been collected for several years in France by the national milk recording organization. Information is used for health management, because repeatedly elevated somatic cell counts are a good indirect predictor of intramammary infection. Genetic parameters were estimated for 67,882 and 49,709 primiparous goats of the dairy Alpine and Saanen breeds, respectively, with complete information for milk somatic cell counts and milk production traits. About 40% of the goats had additional information for 11 udder type traits scored by official classifiers of the breeders’ association CAPGENES. Estimates were obtained by REML with an animal model. The studied trait was lactation somatic cell score (LSCS), the weighted mean of somatic cell score (log-transformed SCC) adjusted for lactation stage. Heritability of LSCS was 0.20 and 0.24 in the Alpine and Saanen breeds, respectively. Relationships with milk production and udder type traits were additionally estimated by using multitrait analyses. Heritability estimates in first lactation ranged from 0.30 to 0.35 for lactation milk, fat, and protein yields; from 0.60 to 0.67 for fat and protein contents; and from 0.22 to 0.50 for udder type traits. Genetic correlations of somatic cell score with milk production traits were generally low, ranging from −0.13 to 0.12. Slightly more negative correlations were estimated for fat content: −0.18 and −0.20 in Saanen and Alpine breeds, respectively. Lactation somatic cell score was genetically correlated with udder floor position (rg = −0.24 and −0.19 in the Alpine and Saanen breeds, respectively), and, in Saanen, teat length, teat width, and teat form (rg = 0.29, 0.34 and −0.27, respectively). These results suggest that a reduction in somatic cell count can be achieved by selection while still improving milk production and udder type and teat traits.  相似文献

To improve the effectiveness of community-based breeding programs for increased milk production, the values of different udder measurements for predicting milk production traits during the milking period were assessed over 3 yr on 273 Awassi ewes. Machine milking of ewes began after weaning, 56 d after parturition, and continued until the milk yield of the ewes was <200 mL/d. Milk yield obtained by hand milking and milk composition were measured weekly, and days in milk, total milk yield, and total yields of protein, fat, and nonfat solids in milk were calculated for each ewe. On d 70 of milking, morphological traits of the whole udder (circumference, width, height, and length), udder cistern (height), and teats (length, width, and position score) were measured. On the same day, the milk yield of ewes was recorded by hand milking. Positive and moderate to strong correlations (r = 0.36 to 0.76) between udder circumference and width, teat width, and milk production traits of total milk yield, and total yields of protein, fat, and nonfat solids were found. However, a more accurate predictor of milk production traits was milk yield on d 70, as higher positive correlations between this variable and the milk production traits were found (r = 0.63 to 0.89). Nine farmers were invited to independently estimate the hand-milked milk yield performance of a sample of 169 ewes (d 15 to 45 of milking) by visually observing each ewe and making a subjective linear score (1 to 5). Their assessments were significantly correlated with milk yield on the day of the observation (r = 0.52), total milk yield (r = 0.50), and days in milk (r = 0.45). Considering the perception details provided by farmers concerning each of the subjective linear scores, it was found that most predictive linear udder measurements of udder circumference and width and teat width identified in this study were implicit in these scores. The predictive ability of the measurements studied have practical implications for community-based breeding programs involving improvement of milk production—not just in Syria, but in other countries in dry areas as well—because it is possible for experienced farmers to visually assess milk production of dairy ewes or take simple udder measurements with predictive value.  相似文献

The activity of plasmin (PL), plasminogen (PG), and plasminogen activator (PA) and their correlation with goat milk components and milk clotting parameters were investigated. Seven late-lactating Saanen goats were used to provide milk samples that were analyzed for PL, PG, and PA activity (colorimetric assay) fat, protein, noncasein nitrogen, nonprotein nitrogen, casein content, and somatic cell count (SCC). Milk clotting parameters (rennet coagulating time = coagulation time; K20 = firming rate of curd; A30 = curd firmness) were measured with a formagraph. Average milk yield and composition were similar to those previously observed in other studies. Plasmin, PG, and PA activity, expressed as units/ml, were, respectively, 20.04 +/- 0.94, 3.21 +/- 0.04, and 1154 +/- 57.61. Plasminogen activity was surprisingly low compared with other species (bovine, ovine), but it was consistent with the high activity of PA. A negative significant correlation was observed between PL and milk casein content. The correlation coefficients between PL and casein/protein ratio and PA and casein/protein ratio were negative and significant. A positive significant correlation was observed between PL and rennet clotting time and PA and rennet clotting time. Also positive was the correlation between PL and K20 and PA and K20. The plasmin activity was negatively correlated with A30. High plasmin and plasminogen activator activity in goat milk appeared to be negatively related with coagulating properties in late lactation, most probably via degradation of casein due to plasmin activity.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to quantify, on a half-udder basis, the changes in ewe milk yield and composition caused by unilateral subclinical mastitis within the current lactation. Fluctuations due to production level, infection severity, time from the onset of infection, and lactation curves were also studied. Yield and composition of milk from half-udders of unilateral infected ewes were compared between them and with a set of healthy halves using a mixed model. The experiment was completed with a whole-udder approach on the same animals. To test the effect of intramammary infection (IMI) in the 7 wk following the onset of infection, 20 ewes that acquired unilateral subclinical mastitis during lactation and 40 healthy ewes were used. Another group of 20 unilaterally infected ewes from wk 1 of lactation and other 40 healthy ewes were studied to test the effect of IMI on lactational milk yield and composition. The individual milk loss in ewes infected during lactation was 15% for the 7 wk following the onset of infection, and 6.6% more milk was produced by the uninfected half to compensate milk lost by the infected half. Lactational milk yield loss in ewes infected from wk 1 postpartum was 17%. The changes in milk yield were noticed from the week of infection diagnosis. The production level of animals influenced the milk yield changes caused by IMI in such a way that the more productive ewes lost more milk, although these losses were proportional to their production level. On the other hand, infection severity affected milk loss between glands, being more pronounced as somatic cell count increased. A clear decrease of lactose content and casein:protein ratio due to subclinical IMI was observed and it remained throughout the postinfection period. Improving udder health status is necessary to maintain milk production and quality in dairy ewes during lactation.  相似文献

A total of 83 lactating dairy ewes (Manchega, n = 48; Lacaune, n = 35) were used in 2 consecutive experiments for assessing the ability of infrared thermography (IRT) to detect intramammary infections (IMI) by measuring udder skin temperatures (UST). In experiment 1, ewes were milked twice daily and IRT pictures of the udder were taken before and after milking at 46 and 56 d in milk (DIM). Milk yield was 1.46 ± 0.04 L/d, on average. Detection of IMI was done using standard bacterial culture by udder half at 15, 34, and 64 DIM. Twenty-two ewes were classified as having IMI in at least one udder half, the others being healthy (142 healthy and 24 IMI halves, respectively). Four IMI halves had clinical mastitis. No UST differences were detected by IMI and udder side, being 32.94 ± 0.04°C on average. Nevertheless, differences in UST were detected for breed (Lacaune – Manchega = 0.35 ± 0.08°C), milking process moment (after – before = 0.13 ± 0.11°C), and milking schedule (p.m. – a.m. = 0.79 ± 0.07°C). The UST increased linearly with ambient temperature (r = 0.88). In experiment 2, the UST response to an Escherichia coli O55:B5 endotoxin challenge (5 μg/udder half) was studied in 9 healthy Lacaune ewes milked once daily in late lactation (0.58 ± 0.03 L/d; 155 ± 26 DIM). Ewes were allocated into 3 balanced groups of 3 ewes to which treatments were applied by udder half after milking. Treatments were (1) control (C00, both udder halves untreated), (2) half udder treated (T10 and C01, one udder half infused with endotoxin and the other untreated, respectively), and (3) treated udder halves (T11, both udder halves infused with endotoxin). Body (vaginal) temperature and UST, milk yield, and milk composition changes were monitored by udder half at different time intervals (2 to 72 h). First local and systemic signs of IMI were observed at 4 and 6 h postchallenge, respectively. For all treatments, UST increased after the challenge, peaking at 6 h in T 0055 (which differed from that in C00, C01, and T10), and decreased thereafter without differences by treatment. Vaginal temperature and milk somatic cell count increased by 6 h postchallenge, whereas lactose content decreased, in the endotoxin-infused udder halves. Effects of endotoxin on lactose and somatic cell count values were detectable in the infused udder halves until 72 h. In conclusion, despite the accuracy of the camera (±0.15°C) and the moderate standard errors of the mean obtained for UST measures (±0.05 to 0.24°C), we were unable to discriminate between healthy and infected (subclinically or clinically) udder halves in dairy ewes.  相似文献

A total of 9592 samples of half udder milk were collected monthly throughout lactation for bacteriological and somatic cell count (SCC) study from 1322 Churra ewe lactations from seven separate flocks enrolled in the recording scheme of the National Association of Spanish Churra Breeders in the Castile-Le6n region of Spain. Statistical analyses were carried out from a mixed model with random factor half udder or ewe for repeated measures. Test of significance of fixed effects of this mixed model showed significant effects of organisms, flock, parity, lactation stage, and birth type on SCC. Special reference must be made to novobiocin-sensitive coagulase-negative staphylococci, which represented more than 50% of the isolates and which elicited SCC geometric means of around 106/ml. In addition, the analysis of 4352 monthly test-day records for milk yield, SCC, and bacteriology showed that the ewes that were uninfected and infected by minor pathogens had the lowest SCC and the highest milk yields, whereas those infected by major pathogens had high SCC and milk yield losses between 8.8 and 10.1% according to the uni- or bilateral character of the infection. Finally, ewes infected by novobiocin-sensitive coagulase-negative staphylococci elicited SCC values similar to those of infections by major pathogens and milk yield losses ranging between those caused by minor and major pathogens. As a result, emphasis should be put on prevention of subclinical mastitis, particularly mastitis caused by novobiocin-sensitive coagulase-negative staphylococci in dairy sheep herds to improve microbiological and hygienic milk quality and to minimize losses in milk yield.  相似文献

The variability in activities of plasmin (PL) and plasminogen (PG) in bulk milk samples from different breeds of goats was investigated. The mean PL activity was higher (19.56±4.72 U g−1) than in milk from other ruminant species, while PG-derived activity was, surprisingly, lower (12.84±5.31 U g−1). No significant differences in PL and PG levels were observed among goat breeds, but PL activity and PL/PG ratio increased in late lactation compared with early lactation. PL activities in pilot-scale curds (acid or rennet) and in some Italian cheeses made from caprine milk were also measured. Generally, acid curds and cheeses had lower residual PL and PG-derived activities than rennet curds and semi-hard cheeses. In addition, the PL/PG ratio was greatly reduced in rennet curds, due to a higher extent of PG-derived activity. Measurement of proteolysis of β-casein in curds confirmed that more extensive proteolysis occurred in rennet curds, which had higher residual PL activities.  相似文献

The effect of the addition of an essential oil (EO) preparation (containing a mixture of natural and nature-identical EO) on the performance of dairy ewes of the Chios breed was investigated. Eighty lactating ewes were allocated into 4 equal groups in a randomized block design, each with 4 replicates of 5 ewes housed in the same pen. The 4 groups were fed the same total mixed ration allowance, the roughage being a mixture of corn silage, lucerne hay, and wheat straw, and the concentrate based on cereals and oil cakes. Control ewes were fed their daily allowance of total mixed ration without any EO. The other 3 groups were supplemented with EO at levels of 50, 100, and 150 mg/kg of the concentrated feed, respectively. Individual milk yield was recorded daily and feed refusals were recorded on a pen basis weekly during the first 5 mo of lactation. Milk samples were analyzed for chemical composition, somatic cell count, and urea content. Rumen samples were analyzed for pH, NH3-N content, and protozoa, cellulolytic, hyper-ammonia-producing, and total viable bacteria counts. Results showed that inclusion of EO increased milk production per ewe, the effect being dose dependent [1.565, 1.681, 1.876, and 2.119 L/d (standard error of the difference ± 0.176) for the control, 50, 100, and 150 mg of EO/kg of concentrate diets, respectively], and thus improved feed utilization. Although the inclusion of EO did not affect milk composition, it lowered urea concentration and somatic cell count in milk samples at the highest supplementation level compared with the control. Total counts of viable and cellulolytic bacteria and protozoa were not influenced by EO supplementation; however, counts of hyper-ammonia-producing bacteria were decreased at the 2 highest supplementation levels compared with the control group. Rumen pH was not affected by EO supplementation, but rumen NH3-N was reduced at the highest EO supplementation level, and acetate rumen concentrations tended to decrease and propionate to increase in a dose-dependent manner. In conclusion, EO supplementation may improve feed utilization and performance of the high-yielding dairy Chios ewes; however, the underlying mechanisms leading to this improvement merit further investigation.  相似文献

The Assaf breed of dairy sheep, a stabilized cross of the Awassi and East Friesian breeds, has replaced the Awassi as the breed of choice in its country of origin, Israel, and has spread to other Mediterranean countries. In Israel the Assaf breed is managed under an intensive production system involving weaning lambs at birth, rearing them artificially, and milking ewes after parturition. There are several breeding periods in the year when ewes are mated following hormonally synchronized estrus. Records of 18,976 lactations from 5 farms were analyzed to investigate factors that influenced Assaf milk and reproductive performance. Lactation curves were fitted to each lactation, and a range of parameters and calculated values were analyzed. Daily milk yield records also were analyzed to describe a typical Assaf lactation and compared with those of the Awassi breed. Factors affecting age at first lambing also were studied. An average Assaf ewe kept under this intensive management regimen was found to produce 334 L of milk during a 173-d lactation. Mean litter size was 1.57 lambs/ewe lambing, and lambing interval was 272 d. Milk production was affected by litter size, with twin- and triplet-bearing ewes producing approximately 20 L more milk per lactation than single-bearing ewes. Day length was the major environmental variable influencing milk yield. The difference between midsummer and midwinter day lengths accounted for a difference in daily milk yield of 0.44 L in favor of summer. Ewe lambs that were mated for the first time at later ages produced more lambs and more milk due to greater early lactation characteristics. Milk production was found to be negatively associated with subsequent reproductive performance. Comparing these results with those from an earlier study in the Awassi breed, the Assaf was found to produce less milk during a shorter lactation than the Awassi, but its greater litter size made it a more profitable breed.  相似文献
