Extracellular fungal glycolipid biosurfactants have attracted attention because productivities can be high, cheap substrates can be used, the molecules are secreted into the medium and the downstream processing is relatively simple. Three classes of extracellular fungal glycolipid biosurfactants have provided most of the scientific advances in this area, namely sophorolipids, mannosylerythritol lipids and cellobioselipids. Polyol lipids, a fourth class of extracellular fungal glycolipid biosurfactants, comprise two groups of molecules: liamocins produced by the yeast-like fungus Aureobasidium pullulans, and polyol esters of fatty acids, produced by some Rhodotorula yeast species. Both are amphiphilic, surface active molecules with potential for commercial development as surfactants for industrial and household applications. The current knowledge of polyol lipids highlights an emerging group of extracellular fungal glycolipid biosurfactants and provides a perspective of what next steps are needed to harness the benefits and applications of this novel group of molecules.  相似文献

Reproductive interference, interspecific sexual interactions that affect reproductive success, is found in various taxa and has been considered as a fundamental source of reproductive character displacement (RCD). Once RCD has occurred, persistent interspecific sexual interactions between species pairs are expected to diminish. However, reproductive interference has been reported from some species pairs that sympatrically coexist. Thus, the question arises, can reproductive interference persist even after RCD? We modeled the evolutionary dynamics of signal traits and mate recognition that determine whether interspecific sexual interactions occur. Our models incorporate male decision making based on the recognition of signal traits, whereas most previous models incorporate only female decision making in mate selection. Our models predict the following: (1) even when male decision making is incorporated, males remain promiscuous; (2) nevertheless, the frequency of interspecific mating is maintained at a low level after trait divergence; (3) the rarity of interspecific mating is due to strict female mate recognition and the consequent refusal of interspecific courtship by females; and (4) the frequency of interspecific mating becomes higher as the cost to females of refusing interspecific courtship increases. These predictions are consistent with empirical observations that males of some species engage in infrequent heterospecific mating. Thus, our models predict that reproductive interference can persist even after RCD occurred.  相似文献

Abstract Interspecific mycelial interactions among brown-rot fungi resulted in either deadlock or replacement of one fungus by the other. Similarly, most of the brown-rot fungi deadlocked with some or all of the whitre-rot fungi tested, while a few were able to replace some of the white-rot fungi. The results indicate similarities in interspecific mycelial interactions among brown-rot fungi and between brown-rot and white-rot fungi. The results further suggest that some brown-rot fungi are capable of invading and occupying domains within white-rot fungal communities in decaying wood.  相似文献

种间相互作用在很大程度上决定了农林复合系统的生产力和可持续性,理解种间相互作用是经营和管理农林复合系统的关键。地上部分相互作用主要包括复合系统组分对光的竞争与互利、小气候的改变对系统生产力的影响;地下部分相互作用主要包括复合系统组分对水分和养分资源的竞争与互利、固氮树种对系统生产力的影响以及化感作用。今后需加强不同立地条件下的不同农林复合系统种间关系的比较、农林复合系统组分的空间分布格局、化感作用以及农林复合系统种间关系模型等研究。  相似文献

A model-based approach was developed to detect interspecific interactions during biofilm development. This approach relied on the comparison of experimental data with a simple null model of biofilm growth dynamics where individual species grew independently of one another, except that they competed for space. Such a model was directly parameterized with a 4D confocal image series of biofilms and then used as a null model to detect interspecific interactions between pairs of bacterial species. This approach was tested in two bispecific competitive trials. In the first trial, the progressive exclusion of Pseudomonas fluorescens by Pseudomonas putida appeared to be due solely to the different intrinsic growth rates of the two strains. In contrast, modelling results suggested the presence of interference competition between Pseudomonas aeruginosa and P. putida in mixed biofilms. The authors’ approach enables the detection of ecologically relevant interactions which constitute a prerequisite to building a comprehensive view of the dynamics and functioning of spatially structured bacterial communities.  相似文献

We analyzed the impact of interspecific interactions between two ecologically and morphologically distinct Puerto Rican lizards, Anolis gundlachi and A. evermanni, in an experimental design consisting of six 20 × 20 m plots divided into three blocks, each consisting of a pair of experimental and control plots. We removed A. gundlachi from experimental plots and monitored the response of A. evermanni. The reduction in the number of A. gundlachi resulted in a significant increase in the abundance of both adult and juvenile A. evermanni. We found no evidence for a shift in structural habitat use in A. evermanni in experimental plots. Two possible mechanisms, interspecific competition and intraguild predation, could explain the increase in abundance of A. evermanni after the removal of A. gundlachi. These results make clear that interactions still occur between A. gundlachi and A. evermanni even given their morphological and ecological differences. Abstract The relationship between humic acid biodegradation and extracellular lignin peroxidase and Mn-dependent peroxidase activities of two white rot fungi, Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Tranetes versicolor , reported to be lignin degraders, was examined. In experimental conditions promoting culture aeration, particularly with T. versicolor no extracellular peroxidase activity could be detected unless humic acids were included in the culture medium. In the presence of humic acids, appreciable enzymatic activities were determined in the culture filtrate of the two fungi. However, T. versicolor was a more effective degrader than P. chrysosporium , and mineralization assays on synthetic humic acids with culture filtrates showed the important role played by Mn2+. The surfactant properties of humic acids are suggested to be responsible for the increase of enzymatic activities.  相似文献

Epithelial Na+ channels (ENaCs) and related channels have large extracellular domains where specific factors interact and induce conformational changes, leading to altered channel activity. However, extracellular structural transitions associated with changes in ENaC activity are not well defined. Using crosslinking and two-electrode voltage clamp in Xenopus oocytes, we identified several pairs of functional intersubunit contacts where mouse ENaC activity was modulated by inducing or breaking a disulfide bond between introduced Cys residues. Specifically, crosslinking E499C in the β-subunit palm domain and N510C in the α-subunit palm domain activated ENaC, whereas crosslinking βE499C with αQ441C in the α-subunit thumb domain inhibited ENaC. We determined that bridging βE499C to αN510C or αQ441C altered the Na+ self-inhibition response via distinct mechanisms. Similar to bridging βE499C and αQ441C, we found that crosslinking palm domain αE557C with thumb domain γQ398C strongly inhibited ENaC activity. In conclusion, we propose that certain residues at specific subunit interfaces form microswitches that convey a conformational wave during ENaC gating and its regulation.  相似文献

Interspecific fungal antagonism leads to biochemical changes in competing mycelia, including up-regulation of oxidative enzymes. Laccase, manganese peroxidase (MnP), manganese-repressed peroxidase (MRP) and lignin peroxidase (LiP) gene expression and enzyme activity were compared during agar interactions between Trametes versicolor and five other wood decay fungi resulting in a range of interaction outcomes from deadlock to replacement of one fungus by another. Increased laccase and Mn-oxidising activities were detected at all interaction zones, but there were few changes in activity in regions away from the interaction zone in T. versicolor mycelia compared to self-pairings. Whilst no LiP activity was detected in any pairing, low level LiP gene expression was detected. MnP activity was detected but not expression of MnP genes; instead, MRP could explain the observed activity. No relationship was found between extent of enzyme activity increase and interaction outcome. Similarities between patterns of gene expression and enzyme activity are discussed.  相似文献

Entomopathogenic fungi are soil-dwelling microorganisms that infect host insects, and some have been used as biological control agents. Construction of an entomopathogenic fungal library provides a strong platform for the development of highly effective biopesticides, but the traditional method using antibiotic media has low isolation efficiency. Herein, to increase the efficiency of isolation, a Tenebrio molitor pathogenicity-based fungal collection method was used for the construction of a library. The isolation efficiency using the T. molitor larvae-based pathogenicity assay was 55.4%, which was significantly higher than the method of antibiotic medium with dodine (6.0%). We named it the Jeonbuk (Chonbuk) National University Entomopathogenic Fungi (JEF) library. It consisted of 279 isolates belonging to 12 genera and 29 species. Main features of the species-representative 15 isolates were characterized in terms of morphology, virulence, conidiogenesis, thermotolerance and production of biologically active materials such as virulence-related enzymes. Some of the species-representative isolates showed higher virulence against T. molitor, Riptortus pedestris and Plutella xylostella in laboratory conditions. The production of enzymes such as chitinase, Pr1 protease and lipase all related to pathogenesis in LB medium was higher than in the SDB and PDB media. In the thermotolerance assay, a Purpureocillium lilacinum isolate showed higher thermotolerance than other isolates. This work reports an efficient library method using T. molitor for building a library for development of fungal biopesticides for pest management.  相似文献

The changes that occur in mycelial architecture of Phanerochaete velutina interacting with Hypholoma fasciculare mycelium in soil microcosms in the presence and absence of the collembola Folsomia candida are investigated employing tools developed in graph theory and statistical mechanics. There was substantially greater overgrowth of H. fasciculare by P. velutina mycelium when grazed than when un-grazed. There was a marked disappearance of hyphal links in all un-grazed systems between 8 d and 34 d, predominantly in areas distant from the interaction, but this was much less evident in grazed systems. Further, new tangential cross-links connecting radial cords distant from the inoculum formed in grazed systems. The thickness of cords increased with time, and more so in grazed systems. There was no significant difference in transport efficiency between the grazed and un-grazed systems. The ability of the mycelial network to modify dynamically link strengths is crucial to achieving a balance between transport capacity/robustness to damage and overall cost of production.  相似文献

种间相互作用是影响湿地植物群落构建的关键因子,其形式、强度和机制可能随着生长发育的过程而发生改变。种子萌发是植物生命周期的关键环节,一定程度上决定了植物种群分布和群落结构。野外种子萌发过程受到邻近同种或异种种子间相互作用的影响,但对于种子萌发过程中种内、种间相互作用强度及其影响因素的了解仍十分有限。该研究通过培养皿萌发实验探讨了种子密度(每皿80粒、每皿160粒)及比例(单种、3:1混种、2:2混种、1:3混种)对互花米草(Spartina alterniflora)、海三棱藨草(Scirpus×mariqueter)、芦苇(Phragmites australis)种子萌发率、平均萌发时间的影响,并采用相对邻株效应(RNE)评估了这3个物种的种内、种间相互作用强度。结果表明,密度对互花米草、海三棱藨草、芦苇种子的萌发率均有一定的促进作用。与互花米草混种时,芦苇种子在占比最低(25%)处理下的平均萌发时间显著长于单种及其他混种比例处理。3种植物种子的竞争能力没有明确的等级关系,存在非传递性竞争,萌发时海三棱藨草相对互花米草具有一定的竞争优势,互花米草相对芦苇具有一定优势,而芦苇的竞争能...  相似文献

The first evidence for the dynamics of in vivo extracellular matrix (ECM) pattern formation during embryogenesis is presented below. Fibrillin 2 filaments were tracked for 12 h throughout the avian intraembryonic mesoderm using automated light microscopy and algorithms of our design. The data show that these ECM filaments have a reproducible morphogenic destiny that is characterized by directed transport. Fibrillin 2 particles initially deposited in the segmental plate mesoderm are translocated along an unexpected trajectory where they eventually polymerize into an intricate scaffold of cables parallel to the anterior-posterior axis. The cables coalesce near the midline before the appearance of the next-formed somite. Moreover, the ECM filaments define global tissue movements with high precision because the filaments act as passive motion tracers. Quantification of individual and collective filament "behaviors" establish fate maps, trajectories, and velocities. These data reveal a caudally propagating traveling wave pattern in the morphogenetic movements of early axis formation. We conjecture that within vertebrate embryos, long-range mechanical tension fields are coupled to both large-scale patterning and local organization of the ECM. Thus, physical forces or stress fields are essential requirements for executing an emergent developmental pattern-in this case, paraxial fibrillin cable assembly.  相似文献

In host-pathogen interactions, efficient pathogen nutrition is a prerequisite for successful colonization and fungal fitness. Filamentous fungi have a remarkable capability to adapt and exploit the external nutrient environment. For phytopathogenic fungi, this asset has developed within the context of host physiology and metabolism. The understanding of nutrient acquisition and pathogen primary metabolism is of great importance in the development of novel disease control strategies. In this review, we discuss the current knowledge on how plant nutrient supplies are utilized by phytopathogenic fungi, and how these activities are controlled. The generation and use of auxotrophic mutants have been elemental to the determination of essential and nonessential nutrient compounds from the plant. Considerable evidence indicates that pathogen entrainment of host metabolism is a widespread phenomenon and can be accomplished by rerouting of the plant's responses. Crucial fungal signalling components for nutrient-sensing pathways as well as their developmental dependency have now been identified, and were shown to operate in a coordinate cross-talk fashion that ensures proper nutrition-related behaviour during the infection process.  相似文献

Interactions between two populations are often defined by their interaction outcomes; that is, the positive, neutral, or negative effects of species on one another. Yet, signs of outcomes are not absolute, but vary with the biotic and abiotic contexts of interactions. Here, we develop a general theory for transitions between outcomes based on consumer–resource (C–R) interactions in which one or both species exploit the other as a resource. Simple models of C–R interactions revealed multiple equilibria, including one for species coexistence and others for extinction of one or both species, indicating that species' densities alone could determine the fate of interactions. All possible outcomes [(+ +), (+ −), (−−), (+ 0), (− 0), (0 0)] of species coexistence emerged merely through changes in parameter values of C–R interactions, indicating that variation in C–R interactions resulting from biotic and abiotic conditions could determine shifts in outcomes. These results suggest that C–R interactions can provide a broad mechanism for understanding context- and density-dependent transitions between interaction outcomes.  相似文献

An imbalance in bone homeostasis results in bone loss and poor healing in bone diseases and trauma. Osteoimmune interactions, as a key contributor to bone homeostasis, depend on the crosstalk between mesenchymal stem cell-osteoblast (MSC-OB) and monocyte-macrophage (MC-Mφ) lineages. Currently, extracellular vesicles (EVs) are considered to be involved in cell-to-cell communication and represent a novel avenue to enhance our understanding of bone homeostasis and to develop novel diagnostic and therapeutic options. In this comprehensive review, we aim to present recent advances in the study of the effect of MC-Mφ-derived EVs on osteogenesis and the regulatory effects of MSC-OB-derived EVs on the differentiation, recruitment and efferocytosis of Mφ. Furthermore, we discuss the role of EVs as crucial mediators of the communication between these cell lineages involved in the development of common bone diseases, with a focus on osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, bone fracture, and periodontal disease. Together, this review focuses on the apparent discrepancies in current research findings and future directions for translating fundamental insights into clinically relevant EV-based therapies for improving bone health.  相似文献
