An evaluation research methodology, which has been validated in a previous study, and which was developed to be both scientifically defensible and feasible from a practical point of view, is described. This involves collecting course participants' judgements about the effects of the course, and taking steps to ensure that the process by which the participants arrive at these judgements is sound. The application of this methodology to a course in business administration revealed the following effects or consequences: (1) Access to and progress in successful careers; (2) Flexibility and mobility in careers; (3) Ability to take overall view of problems; (4) Personal confidence; (5) Awareness of own aspirations and career fit; (6) Frustration from unused skills and unfulfilled expectations; (7) High salaries; (8) General reasoning and problem solving ability; (9) Economic/commercial understanding; (10) Understanding of organisation and human behaviour; (11) Useful work, career and personal contacts; (12) Social skills.  相似文献

Few studies have explored the professional training experiences of Arab women within the contexts of learning organisational cultures and relevant human resource development (HRD) practices. Capitalising on in-depth, face-to-face interviews, this study explores the experiences of women managers in Lebanon with professional training and organisational learning. The findings demonstrate the paucity of professional training and learning opportunities for women and illustrate how organisational discrimination and gender-biased cultures and tension influence women’s learning. To overcome these barriers and alleviate organisational tension, the Lebanese women managers capitalise on their agency and individual capacities to improve their training experiences and increase their access to learning opportunities. By virtue of individual agency and through their agentic process, the careerists shape their training and overall learning by being adaptive and developing structures of action that enable them to advance their learning. The results have important implications for HR managers and HRD scholars. They also extend our understanding of the importance, or lack thereof, of the learning culture within an organisation.  相似文献

In this article he emphasizes that an acquisition strategy is always only one of several possible alternatives to achieve a desired objective. Furthermore, an acquisition is only a good strategy if the objective is valid and is thoroughly understood — and if the price is right. An interdependent marketing-production planning model based on control theory is described. The interdependent model is a composition of the Vidale-Wolfe model relating advertising rates to sales rates, and the Holt, Modigliani, Muth & Simon (HMMS) production inventory planning model. An overall optimal marketing-production plan is identified using the interdependent model. This overall optimal plan (resulting from centralized planning) is then used as a reference point to measure the effectiveness of decentralized planning approaches. It is found that in some cases almost no coordination is necessary, in some cases the use of a transfer price leads to good decentralized planning, and in other cases centralized planning must be employed to achieve good results. Several examples are presented to illustrate the cases in which decentralized planning does and does not work well.  相似文献

This paper discusses the simulation results of a system consisting of a factory warehouse, and five regional distribution centers, each handling the same four products. The independent variables are demands, leadtimes, cost-rate structures. The basic data for this study has been taken from an appliance manufacturing company. Simulation experiments were conducted for three levels of each of the independent variables. The performance of the systems was measured against five important management criteria: average investment in inventories, average annual inventory carrying cost, average shortage cost per year, average reordering cost per year, and total number of reorders within the system per year. Analysis of variance was used to investigate the respective influence of each of the independent variables on each individual performance measure. The results of our study are new and of special interest, because they highlight the differences between the performance trends resulting from a single-item model and those resulting from a complex system, in terms of variations of the independent variables. This study proves that the trend of any performance-measure provided by a single-item single-location model should never be used to project that very trend of the aggregate performance of a complex inventory-distribution system.  相似文献

The design and operation of an information system requires assumptions on the values of parameters which characterize the behavior of pertinent random processes. If these parameters remain constant over time at design values, system performance will be as specified. Otherwise, performance will vary from design and cost and service penalties will arise. A control chart procedure is introduced for monitoring system parameters and introducing appropriate action to reset them to design values as indicated. The control system is set so that the expected cost of monitoring is a minimum. A table of control system settings over a broad set of a priori assumptions is provided. The health care system crisis has been proclaimed and analyzed so much by economists, policy analysts, politicians, business executives, and journalists that the key statistics and phrases are becoming as familiar as the lyrics of a popular song-14 percent of the GNP goes to health care, 37 million Americans lack health insurance, too many specialists and not enough primary care physicians, etc. What I have not found is a comprehensive assessment of how the health care system got so sick. The different social science specialists focus on their respective symptoms or organs, but do not propose therapies to treat the entire organism. Ilya Prigogine's Theory of Dissipative Structures (now old hat since he won the Nobel Prize in 1977) demonstrated that self-organizing systems, be they health care systems or individual patients, respond in similar ways to the demands of illness and growth. Therefore, a clinical correlation for the health care system may have more than poetic appeal. I would like to offer the following clinical analogy for what ails our health care system.  相似文献

As evidence has accumulated that entrepreneurs may pay a financial penalty for their career choice, researchers have struggled to explain the motivation that might lead individuals to pursue the creation of new firms, technologies, and opportunities. We introduce the desire to leave a legacy as both a common source of motivation for many entrepreneurs, and a source of variation, as entrepreneurs who wish to leave a legacy must decide what they would like to leave behind, and whom they wish to benefit from that act. We discuss the implications of the different kinds of legacies for entrepreneurs and their organizations, particularly at founding and exit, when the legacy motive is likely to be particularly salient.  相似文献

Trustworthiness is the assessment that another person or others can be trusted because in the past they had shown adequate ability, integrity, and benevolence. Trust is the actual willingness to depend on the trusted party to fulfill its future obligations when there is risk that this trusted party might take undue advantage of the situation. In the current conceptualization of trust theory, trustworthiness is important because it leads to trust. Applied to the management of IT adoption and assessment, research has indeed shown that both trustworthiness and trust, often combined statistically, have a direct effect on IT adoption and assessment. There are circumstances, however, such as in this study, when the trusted party has left the scene, making its future actions and the risk of dependence on these actions irrelevant to the trusting party. The question arises whether trustworthiness still plays a role in such cases. Seemingly, at least based on the current conceptualization, this should make the trustworthiness of the trusted party an insignificant consideration. Logic is advanced why even in such a case trustworthiness may still be important, but should play an indirect role. The proposition suggested is that the trustworthiness of the messenger is important, as previously suggested, but what really counts is accepting the message this messenger conveyed. An argument is raised why in this case interpersonal justice increases trustworthiness and user acceptance of the message. The data support these propositions. Theory and managerial implications are discussed.  相似文献

This paper deals with an FMS (Flexible Manufacturing System) in a JIT (Just-In-Time) production system. The FMS consists of m workstations, one dispatching station and a single AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle). Each workstation has an input buffer of limited capacity and its processing times are distributed stochastically. When the processing of a new component starts at the workstation, a withdrawal Kanban attached to it is sent to the dispatching station. The AGV chooses one from workstations whose withdrawal Kanbans are accumulated at the dispatching station, and conveys a component with a withdrawal Kanban from the dispatching station to the workstation. The main purpose of this paper is to find an optimal dispatching policy of the AGV that maximizes the long-run expected average reward per unit time. The problem is formulated as a semi-Markov decision process and an optimal dispatching policy is computed. Numerical experiments are performed to make several comparisons.  相似文献

This research analysed and optimised the assembly line balance of notebook computer system production lines in a major computer plant. The research developed a mathematical model for balancing assembly lines of a specific notebook computer system. Precedence relationship charts were created to enforce the required sequences and ILOG CPLEX software was used to obtain the optimal solution of the task assignments to the workstations. The new task assignments were simulated to verify the improvement recommendations and predict the potential benefits.The estimated improvements include: (1) 5.9% increase in average daily production; (2) 29% decrease in average daily WIP; (3) 67.9% reduction in cycle time; (4) 16.7% reduction in operator headcount over the whole system assembly area. The contributions of this research include: (1) Establishing line balancing mathematical model suitable for notebook computer factories; (2) Optimising the system assembly lines for the subject company; (3) Transferring the line balance modelling and optimisation techniques for company use.  相似文献

The oil supply chain is facing new challenges due to emerging issues such as new alternative energy sources, oil sources scarcity, and price variability with high impact on demand and production and profit margins reduction. Additionally, the existence of large, complex and world wide spread businesses implies a complex system to be managed where distribution can be seen as one of the key areas that needs to be efficiently and effectively managed. Different types of distribution modes characterize the oil supply chain where the pipeline mode is one of the most complex to operate when having multiproduct characteristics. This paper addresses the planning of a generic oil derivatives transportation system characterized by a multiproduct pipeline that connects a single refinery to a storage tank farm. Two alternative mixed integer linear programming models (MILP) that aim to attain a set of planning objectives such as fulfilling costumers’ demands (which is mandatory) while minimizing the medium flow rate are developed. Additionally, final inventory levels are avoided to be excessively low. A real world scenario of a Portuguese company is used to validate and compare the two alternative MILP models developed in this paper.  相似文献

This study examines the factors that influence the success of expatriate performance appraisal systems in U.S. multinationals, as perceived by the organizations. Results involving 94 firms suggest that clarifying performance expectations prior to the performance rating, the fairness of the performance appraisal system, and the incorporation of career development positively influence perceptions of expatriate performance appraisal system success. The frequency of evaluating expatriates performance approached significance and consideration of the local environment in the performance appraisal process was not a significant contributor to the perceived success of the system. Research and practical implications, as well as suggestions for future research, are discussed.  相似文献
