The effect of Fe nanofluid on the performance enhancement on solar water heater integrated with thermal energy storage system is investigated experimentally. A 0.5% wt fraction of Fe nanoparticle was synthesized with the mixture of water/propylene‐glycol base fluid. The experimental implementation utilized 40‐nm‐size Fe nanoparticle, 15 ° collector tilt angle, and 1.5 kg/min mass flow rate heat‐transfer fluid circulation. The system efficiency reached 59.5% and 50.5% for with and without nanofluid. The water tank temperature was increased by 13 °C during night mode. The average water tank temperature at night mode was 47.5 °C, while the average ambient temperature was 26 °C. The Fe nanofluid improved the system working duration during night mode by an average of 5 h. The techno‐economic analysis results showed a yearly estimated cost savings of 28.5% using the Fe nanofluids as heat transfer fluid. The embodied energy emission rate, collector size, and weight can be reduced by 9.5% using nanofluids. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

As conventional energy sources like fossil fuels are getting rare, cost of energy production has become higher as well as the concern of environmental pollution by burning of fossil fuels among the developed and developing nations. Solar energy is the most vastly available energy and very effective in terms of energy conversion. The most common solar thermal collector used is the black surface as radiant absorber but the thermal energy efficiency is low. In this study, the effect of nanofluid has been analyzed by using as working fluid for direct solar collector. The extinction coefficient of water based aluminum nanofluid has been investigated and evaluated by varying nanoparticle size and volume fraction. The particle size has minimal influence on the optical properties of nanofluid. On the other hand, the extinction coefficient is linearly proportionate to volume fraction. The improvement is promising within 1.0% volume fraction and the nanofluid is almost opaque to light wave.  相似文献

Recently, a solar thermal collector often employs nanoparticle suspension to absorb the solar radiation directly by a working fluid as well as to enhance its thermal performance. The collector efficiency of a direct absorption solar collector (DASC) is very sensitive to optical properties of the working fluid, such as absorption and scattering coefficients. Most of the existing studies have neglected particle scattering by assuming that the size of nanoparticle suspension is much smaller than the wavelength of solar radiation (i.e., Rayleigh scattering is applicable). If the nanoparticle suspension is made of metal, however, the scattering cross-section of metallic nanoparticles could be comparable to their absorption cross-section depending on the particle size, especially when the localized surface plasmon (LSP) is excited. Therefore, for the DASC utilizing a plasmonic nanofluid supporting the LSP, light scattering from metallic particle suspension must be taken into account in the thermal analysis. The present study investigates the scattering effect on the thermal performance of the DASC employing plasmonic nanofluid as a working fluid. In the analysis, the Monte Carlo method is employed to numerically solve the radiative transfer equation considering the volume scattering inside the nanofluid. It is found that the light scattering can improve the collector performance if the scattering coefficient of nanofluid is carefully engineered depending on its value of the absorption coefficient.  相似文献

During the last several years, the increase in cooling power requirements for heat exchangers have led to an escalation in heat transfer studies being performed on the use of nanofluids as heat transfer fluids. However, limited effort has been attempted to relate and interpret these findings or the anomalies associated with them. The paper compiles test data from several studies conducted on different types of heat exchangers. In this review, a concentrated effort is spent to clarify the ambiguities regarding the effect of nanoparticle size on the nanofluid thermal conductivity and Nusselt number. Results show that the nanofluid thermal conductivity is not influenced by the nanoparticle size, but by the clustering of the particles themselves. The less compact the structure of the nanoparticle clustering is, the greater the enhancement in the nanofluid thermal conductivity is. Data were also compiled to interpret the relation between the nanofluid flow pattern, nanoparticles volume fraction in the base fluid, and the convective heat transfer. The results from the majority of the heat exchanger studies show an increase in the heat transfer coefficient with the increase in nanoparticle volume fraction. However, studies conducted on plate heat exchanges display some inconsistencies. In the majority of the heat exchanger studies with the exception of few, the decrease in the nanoparticle size is shown to result in an enhancement of the bulk fluid Nusselt number. Compiled test data also reveal that the effectiveness of the alumina nanoparticles is dependent on the flow pattern. The increase in the nanoparticles concentration is shown to result in an increase in the nanofluid heat transfer enhancement as the fluid is transitioning from laminar to turbulent flow. In general, the smaller the nanoparticle size is, the greater the enhancement in the fluid Nusselt number is.  相似文献

An analytical study on the viscous dissipation effect on entropy generation in laminar fully developed forced convection of water–alumina nanofluid in circular microchannels is reported. In the first-law analysis, closed form solutions of the temperature distributions in the radial direction for the models with and without viscous dissipation term in the energy equation are obtained. The results show that the heat transfer coefficient decreases with nanoparticle volume fraction largely in the laminar regime of nanofluid flow in microchannel when the viscous dissipation effect is taken into account. In the second-law analysis, the two models are compared by analyzing their relative deviations in entropy generation for different Reynolds number and nanoparticle volume fraction. When the viscous dissipation is taken into account, the temperature distribution is prominently affected and consequently the entropy generation ascribable to the heat transfer irreversibility is significantly increased. The increase of entropy generation induced by the increase of nanoparticle volume fraction is attributed to the increase of both the thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluid which causes augmentation in the heat transfer and fluid friction irreversibilities, respectively. By incorporating the viscous dissipation effect, both thermal performance and exergetic effectiveness for forced convection of nanofluid in microchannels dwindle with nanoparticle volume fraction, contrary to the widespread conjecture that nanofluids possess advantage over pure fluid associated with higher overall effectiveness from the aspects of first-law and second-law of thermodynamics.  相似文献

Numerical study has been carried out on the laminar forced convection flow of nanofluids in a wide rectangular microchannel. The flow and heat transfer characteristics of gold and of single-walled carbon (SWCNT) nanofluids are investigated in order to find an efficient and cost-effective heat transfer fluid. The effects of nanoparticle volume concentration and of spherical and cylindrical particulate sizes on the conjugate heat transfer performance of the microchannel are reported. The effective thermal conductivity of a nanofluid is evaluated on the basis of particle sphericity by considering the volume and surface area of the nanoparticles. The average convective heat transfer coefficient increases with increase in Reynolds number and volume concentration. Moreover, sphericity-based thermal conductivity evaluation showed that increasing the length of the SWCNT nanoparticle has significant effect on the heat transfer performance, concluding that axial heat conduction dominates the radial heat conduction within the nanoparticle. The carbon nanofluid is identified as an optimized heat transfer fluid with better heat transfer characteristics in comparison with the gold nanofluid. It also reduces the cost of the working fluid. The variations in the interface temperature between solid and fluid regions are reported for nanofluids with different concentrations at different Reynolds numbers. The diameter and length of the SWCNT nanoparticle show a significant effect on heat transfer characteristics.  相似文献

In this study natural convection heat transfer of Cu–water nanofluid in a cold outer circular enclosure containing a hot inner sinusoidal circular cylinder in the presence of horizontal magnetic field is investigated numerically using the Control Volume based Finite Element Method (CVFEM). Both circular enclosure and inner cylinder are maintained at constant temperature. The governing equations of fluid motion and heat transfer in their vorticity stream function form are used to simulate the fluid flow and heat transfer. The effective thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluid are calculated using the Maxwell–Garnetts (MG) and Brinkman models, respectively. The calculations were performed for different governing parameters such as the Hartmann number, Rayleigh number, values of the number of undulations of the inner cylinder and nanoparticle volume fraction. The results indicate that in the absence of magnetic field, enhancement ratio decreases as Rayleigh number increases while an opposite trend is observed in the presence of magnetic field. Also it is found that the average Nusselt number is an increasing function of nanoparticle volume fraction, the number of undulations and Rayleigh numbers while it is a decreasing function of Hartmann number.  相似文献

The current research proposes the idea of using water-saturated metal oxide foams and water-based nanofluids as solar absorber in the direct absorption solar collectors (DASCs). Specifically, the novel solar collector design utilizes copper oxide (CuO) porous foam and nanoparticle with high optical properties and is expected to have enhanced thermal performance than the conventional collectors utilizing pure water. The finite volume technique is used to solve the governing equations of flow and heat transfer in the radiative participating media. Also, to establish the reliability and accuracy of numerical solutions, the obtained results are compared with the corresponding numerical and experimental data. The computations are carried out for different nanoparticle volume fractions, foam pore sizes, working fluid mass flow rates, and both porous layer thicknesses and positions (inserted at the lower or upper wall of the collector). It is found that the efficiency of DASC partially/fully filled with metal oxide foam is maximized when the collector is completely filled with it. Compared with the water flow, the numerical results show that the collector efficiency using CuO nanofluid and metal oxide foam is improved by up to 26.8% and 23.8%, respectively. Moreover, considering the second law of thermodynamics, the use of CuO nanofluids in the DASC seems to be more effective than the use of CuO porous foam.  相似文献

Due to its distinctive characteristics nanofluid has drawn much attention from academic communities since the last decade. Compared with conventional fluids, nanofluid has higher thermal conductivity and surface to volume ratio, which enables it to be an effective working fluid in terms of heat transfer enhancement. Recent experimental works have shown that with low nanoparticle concentrations (1–5 vol.%), the effective thermal conductivity of the suspensions can increase by more than 20% for various mixtures. Although many outstanding experimental works have been carried out, the fundamental understanding of nanofluid characteristics and performance is still not sufficient. Much more theoretical and numerical studies are required. Over the past two decades, the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has experienced a rapid development and well accepted as a useful method to simulate various fluid behaviours. In the present study, the LBM is employed to investigate the characteristics of nanofluid flow and heat transfer. By coupling the density and temperature distribution functions, the hydrodynamics and thermal features of nanofluids are properly simulated. The effects of the parameters including Rayleigh number and volume fraction of nanoparticles on hydrodynamic and thermal performances are investigated. The results show that both Rayleigh number and solid volume fraction of nanoparticles have influences on heat transfer enhancement of nanofluids; and there is a critical value of Rayleigh number on the performance of heat transfer enhancement.  相似文献

Field-synergy analysis is performed on the water–oxide nanofluid flow in circular heat sinks to examine the synergetic relation between the flow and temperature fields for heating processes. By varying the Reynolds number and the nanoparticle volume fraction, the convective heat transfer of nanofluid is investigated based on the field synergy number. For heating, the degree of synergy between the velocity and temperature fields of nanofluid flow deteriorates with the Reynolds number increase, leading to a decreased heat transfer performance of the nanofluid. By increasing the particle volume fraction, the degree of synergy between the velocity and temperature fields of the nanofluid flow can be intensified, thus going to convection heat transfer enhancement. After generating results, one can notice that the heat transfer enhancement is strongly dependent on nanoparticle type, Reynolds number, and volume fraction. The results are similar, even if the thermal conductivity of the two considered oxide nanoparticles are quite different. Additionally, a convenient figure of merit that is known as the Mouromtseff number was used as base of comparison, and the results indicated that the considered nanofluids can successfully replace water in specific applications for single-phase forced convection flow in a tube.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to explore the behavior of Sutterby nanofluid passed a sloping sheet with a tendency to fluctuate thermal conductivity, radiation and a magnetic field. In a solar parabolic trough collector (PTC) for solar cooling and hydrogen generation, a nanofluid is employed as the running fluid. The Koo-Kleinstreuer-Li (KKL) model is used to calculate effective thermal conductivity and viscosity. The advance results are differentiate with the Lobatto 111A method which strengthens the integration reliability of the current liquid system. Copper oxide-engine oil (CuO-EO) is taken into consideration to address the performance analysis of the current study. The skin coefficient and the local Nusselt number are expressed numerically in the form of a table, whereas other dominant competent parameters on the speed and temperature profiles are discussed numerically and graphically. The radiation parameter slows the rate of heat transfer while increasing the velocity gradient. To test the effect on many device performance parameters, nanoparticle absorption also varies with the growth of Reynolds and Brinkman numbers, entropy creates growth. The thermodynamic action of copper oxide-engine oil (CuO-EO) nanofluid is more noticeable than engine oil (EO) nanofluid oil under similar conditions. CuO-based EO nanofluid system had the best heat transmission efficiency and hydrogen generation. The thermal effectiveness of CuO-EO over EO is characterized by a minimum of 2.89% and a magnitude of 14.79%. Written theory simulations may be more effective in developing solar thermal energy systems.  相似文献

This paper analyzes heat transfer and fluid flow of natural convection in an inclined square enclosure filled with different types of nanofluids having various shapes of nanoparticles in the presence of oriented magnetic field. The Galerkin weighted residual finite element method has been employed to solve the governing non-dimensional partial differential equations. In the numerical simulations, water, ethylene glycol, and engine oil containing copper, alumina, titanium dioxide nanoparticles are considered. The effects of model parameters such as Rayleigh number, Hartmann number, nanoparticles volume fraction, magnetic field inclination angle, geometry inclination angle on the fluid flow and heat transfer are investigated. The results indicate that increment of the Rayleigh number and nanoparticle volume fraction increase the heat transfer rate in a significant way, whereas, increment of the Hartmann number decreases the overall heat transfer rate. It is also observed that a blade shape nanoparticle gives higher heat transfer rate compared to other shapes of nanoparticles. The critical geometry inclination angle at which the maximum heat transfer rate is achieved depends on the nanoparticle volume fraction as well as on the magnetic field orientation. These results are new and have direct applications in solar thermal collectors and thermal insulator of buildings.  相似文献

The heat transfer effectiveness of nanofluids is adversely affected by the delay in convection onset. The lesser effectiveness, when compared to that of base fluid, is observed in a range of nanofluid layer thickness. The heat transfer coefficient of water–Al2O3 nanofluid can be enhanced by sustaining the equilibrium between Rayleigh number, temperature, particle volume fraction, and enclosure aspect ratio. In this paper, the specific correlation of fluid layer thickness and the onset of convection, which can significantly dominate the heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids are investigated using the concept of critical Rayleigh number. The water layer thickness for convection onset is first experimentally assessed for different real-life heat flux densities. It is then performed for Al2O3–water nanofluid for varying volume fractions. With the increase in volume fraction even though thermal conductivity increases, the overall heat transfer enhancement of the nanofluid is reduced. Temperature involved (heat flux density), the volume fraction of the nanofluid used, nanofluid layer thickness (space availability for the cooling system), and mass of the nanoparticle influence heat transfer enhancement. A higher volume fraction may not always result in enhancement of heat transfer as far as nanofluids are concerned.  相似文献

The main aim of this study is to enhance the thermal performance of loop heat pipe (LHP) charged with nanofluid as the working fluid. Thus, experiments are conducted to investigate heat transfer characteristics of using diamond-H2O nanofluid with nanoparticle mass concentration ranged from 0% to 3% in a LHP as a working medium for heat input range from 20 W to 60 W. The three-dimensional model, laminar flow and heat transfer governing equations are solved using the finite volume method. The simulations are carried out with three-dimensional model based on the characterization of the working fluid inside the LHP to give an insight into the heat transfer and fluid flow mechanism. The LHP performance is evaluated in terms of temperature distributions and total thermal resistance of LHP. It is inferred that the temperatures obtained at all points in evaporator side of LHP charged with diamond-H2O nanofluid are lower and reach their steady state faster than LHP charged with pure water. At the constant heat input, test results showed the average decrease of 5.7%?10.8% at nanoparticle mass concentrations ranging from 0.5% to 3% in Rth of LHP as compared with pure water (0%).  相似文献

Application of nanofluids in thermal energy devices such as solar collectors is developing day by day. This paper reports the results of experiments on a flat plate solar collector where the working fluid is SiO2/ethylene glycol (EG)–water nanofluid with volume fractions up to 1%. The thermal efficiency and performance characteristics of solar collector are obtained for mass flow rates between 0.018 and 0.045 kg/s. The curve characteristics of solar collector indicate that the effects of particle loading on the thermal efficiency enhancement are more pronounced at higher values of heat loss parameter. The results of this work elucidate the potential of SiO2 nanoparticles to improve the efficiency of solar collectors despite its low thermal conductivity compared to other usual nanoparticles.  相似文献

Parabolic trough solar collector usually consists of a parabolic solar energy concentrator, which reflects solar energy into an absorber. The absorber is a tube, painted with solar radiation absorbing material, located at the focal length of the concentrator, usually covered with a totally or partially vacuumed glass tube to minimize the heat losses. Typically, the concentration ratio ranges from 30 to 80, depending on the radius of the parabolic solar energy concentrator. The working fluid can reach a temperature up to 400°C, depending on the concentration ratio, solar intensity, working fluid flow rate and other parameters. Hence, such collectors are an ideal device for power generation and/or water desalination applications. However, as the length of the collector increases and/or the fluid flow rate decreases, the rate of heat losses increases. The length of the collector may reach a point that heat gain becomes equal to the heat losses; therefore, additional length will be passive. The current work introduces an analysis for the mentioned collector for single and double glass tubes. The main objectives of this work are to understand the thermal performance of the collector and identify the heat losses from the collector. The working fluid, tube and glass temperature's variation along the collector is calculated, and variations of the heat losses along the heated tube are estimated. It should be mentioned that the working fluid may experience a phase change as it flows through the tube. Hence, the heat transfer correlation for each phase is different and depends on the void fraction and flow characteristics. However, as a first approximation, the effect of phase change is neglected. In this paper, heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of copper–water nanofluid flow through isothermally heated corrugated channel are numerically studied. A numerical simulation is carried out by solving the governing continuity, momentum and energy equations for laminar flow in curvilinear coordinates using the Finite Difference (FD) approach. The investigation covers Reynolds number and nanoparticle volume fraction in the ranges of 100–1000 and 0–0.05 respectively. The effects of using the nanofluid on the heat transfer and pressure drop inside the channel are investigated. It is found that the heat transfer enhancement increases with increase in the volume fraction of the nanoparticle and Reynolds number, while there is slight increase in pressure drop. Comparisons of the present results with those available in literature are presented and discussed.  相似文献

Investigating the complicated thermal physics mechanisms of the parabolic trough solar collector systems plays a vital role in efficiently utilizing the solar energy. In this paper, the least squares support vector machine (LSSVM) method is developed to model and optimize the parabolic trough solar collector system. Numerical simulations are implemented to evaluate the feasibility and efficiency of the LSSVM method, where the sample data derived from the experiment and the simulation results of two solar collector systems with 30 m2 and 600 m2 solar fields, and the complicated relationship between the solar collector efficiency and the solar flux, the flow rate and the inlet temperature of the heat transfer fluid (HTF) is extracted. Some basic rules, such as the solar collector efficiency increases with the increase of the solar flux and the flow rate of the heat transfer fluid, and decreases with the increase of the inlet temperature of the HTF, are obtained, which indicates the LSSVM method is competent to optimize the solar collector systems. As a result, the new approach will provide meaningful data for developing the parabolic trough solar thermal power plant in China.  相似文献
