A large scale experiment has been carried out on an experimental facility to study the mass transfer of trichloroethylene (TCE) in a partially saturated porous medium. 5 liters of TCE have been infiltrated in the vadose zone of the site. The mass transfer of TCE from the vapor plume in the unsaturated zone towards the top of groundwater was quantified based on an analytical and a numerical approach. The mass of the pollutant measured at the exit of the model is well represented by the two mathematical approaches. It is found that the transfer of TCE towards the groundwater from the vapor plume is weak, which corresponds to 285 g of TCE, approximately 4% of the initial mass. We consider the onset of convection in a porous medium heated from below and subjected to a horizontal mean flow. The effect of porous inertia is studied, and the transverse aspect ratio a of the medium is taken into accout. We find that the dominant modes are longitudinal rolls (L.R) if a is an integer or transverse traveling rolls (T.R) if a is below ac with ac<1. When a is not an integer with a>ac, the setting on patterns are oscillatory three-dimensional structures (3D) for a>1 or T.R for ac<a<1 provided that the Reynolds number remains below a critical value ReK*. The motivations to realize nuclear breeder reactors are developed in the present context of a strong growth in electronuclear power stations in many countries, using mostly moderated and water cooled reactors.The past studies can be of a substantial profit in France and, to a lesser degree, in other countries of the EU. However, to use fully the 238 uranium isotope, the materials for these breeders must withstand much harder radiation than those for water reactors. The power densities and thermal gradients will also be much more intense. The mechanical stresses, both static and dynamic, will be large and will act on materials with altered mechanical properties. Fuel elements will have to be produced with materials already irradiated several times and therefore showing such alterations.A field of studies concerning materials and their mechanical behavior in new and severe conditions is sketched here, both in construction and working conditions, together with proposed necessary instrumentation and research orientations.  相似文献

A discrete model of a woven fabric structure is established, whereby nodes endowed with a mass and a rotational rigidity are connected by rigid bars to form a two-dimensional truss. The set of four bars that delineate a quadrilateral area is further endowed with a torsion deformation mode. The kinematics of the truss reproduces the large rotations and displacements encountered for real tissues. The equilibrium shape of such a structure is obtained as the minimum of its total potential energy versus the whole set of kinematic translational and rotational variables, accounting for eventual kinematic constraints due to contact with a rigid surface by the Lagrange multipliers method. We study experimentally the impact of a plastic bead on a rotating wall made of steel (velocity Ω; radial position x0). The results show that the restitution coefficient is directly function of the impact velocity x0Ω and is invariant by changing frame reference. The influence of the height of release of the particle on its angular velocity after impact is also studied. We observe an increase of the angular velocity with height followed by a saturation. We propose an interpretation for this evolution considering that the particle may roll without sliding during all the impact. The existence and propagation of the surface waves at a vacuum/porous medium interface are investigated in the low frequency range. Two types of surface waves are shown to be possible: the generalized Rayleigh wave, which always exists, and the Stoneley wave, which exists for a limited range of wave numbers. Moreover, within the k-domain of existence the Stoneley wave cannot appear for certain values of elastic parameters of the solid phase. The bifurcation behavior of both the Stoneley wave and the Biot (P2) bulk wave, depending on the wave number, is revealed. A new formulation is proposed to describe immiscible compressible two-phase flow in porous media. The main feature of this formulation is the introduction of a global pressure. The resulting equations are written in a fractional flow formulation and lead to a coupled system which consists of a nonlinear parabolic (the global pressure equation) and a nonlinear diffusion–convection one (the saturation equation) which can be efficiently solved numerically. This paper concerns the influence of temperature on the water retention curve of porous media. We present a model based on the differential of suction as a function of temperature, water content and void ratio. When adjusted for a given temperature, this model is able to predict the curve for any temperature. The model was validated by several tests on a ceramic (terra cotta) and a clayey silty sand at 20 and 60?°C. Extending a previous work on the Gurson model for a ‘porous von Mises’ material, the present study first focuses on the yield criterion of a ‘porous Drucker–Prager’ material with spherical cavities. On the basis of the Gurson micro-macro model and a second order conic programming (socp) formulation, calculated inner and outer approaches to the criterion are very close, providing a reliable estimate of the yield criterion. Comparison with an analytical criterion recently proposed by Barthélémy and Dormieux—from a nonlinear homogenization method—shows both excellent agreement when considering tensile average boundary conditions and substantial improvement under compressive conditions. Then the results of an analogous study in the case of cylindrical cavities in plane strain are presented. It is worth noting that obtaining these results was made possible by using mosek, a recent commercial socp code, whose impressive efficiency was already seen in our previous works. Very different materials are named ‘Glass’, with Young's modulus E and Poisson's ratio ν extending from 5 to 180 GPa and from 0.1 to 0.4, respectively, in the case of bulk inorganic glasses. Glasses have in common the lack of long range order in the atomic organization. Beside the essential role of elastic properties for materials selection in mechanical design, we show in this analysis that macroscopical elastic characteristics (E,ν) provide an interesting way to get insight into the short- and medium-range orders existing in glasses. In particular, ν, the packing density (Cg) and the glass network dimensionality appear to be strongly correlated. Networks consisting primarily of chains and layers units (chalcogenides, low Si-content silicate glasses) correspond to ν>0.25 and Cg>0.56, with maximum values observed for metallic glasses (ν0.4 and Cg>0.7). On the contrary, ν<0.25 is associated to a highly cross-linked network with a tri-dimensional organization resulting in a low packing density. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the elastic moduli brings a new light on the ‘fragility’ of glasses (as introduced by Angell) and on the level of cooperativity of atomic movements at the source of the deformation process. NaCl-water saturated kaolinite is observed to show pH-dependent electro-osmotic flow. This behaviour is modelled by computing the electro-osmotic flow between parallel planes as a function of their electrical surface charge density. The latter can be related to pH through the physico-chemical properties of the material. In case of kaolinite particles, isomorphic substitution and two surface dissociation reactions allow to predict the pH-dependence of the electrical charge density and thus the variations of electro-osmotic flows with pH. The solid phase of the porous material considered in this Note is made up of lamellar particles. The influence of interaction forces between platelets on the macroscopic behavior is addressed. Universal motions with uniform steady vorticity form a corolla of linear spaces derived from rigid body motions. Closely related to potential flows, they satisfy two extensions of Lagrange theorem, are investigated with the help of complex functions, as stand celebrated when be plane. They take place in hydrodynamics, aerodynamics, geophysics, astrophysics, turbulence, physics of plasmas and superfluid helium. In all the cases, arbitrary unsteady span-wise translations permit to generalise as well as to exhibit helical or 3D universal motions. This paper is devoted to a micromechanics-based simulation of the response of concrete to hydrostatic and oedometric compressions. Concrete is described as a composite made up of a cement matrix in which rigid inclusions are embedded. The focus is put on the role of the interface between matrix and inclusion which represent the interfacial transition zone (ITZ). A plastic behavior is considered for both the matrix and the interfaces. We show that the affine structure of the 3-dimensional space is deeply enmeshed with the static laws expression. The relevance of tensorial rules for calculus in mechanics is thus enhanced. The macroscopic response of a cracked solid subjected to drying is investigated within the framework of micromechanics. The originality of this contribution lies in the fact that the variations of the aspect ratios of cracks induced by the capillary pressure increase are accounted for. When the initial aspect ratio is small enough, it is shown that neglecting the geometrical changes yields an erroneous prediction of the sign of the macroscopic volume strain rate.
