One hundred sixty-five search requests processed through the SUNY Biomedical Communication Network were analyzed to determine how many of the citations thus retrieved would have been retrievable by MEDLINE. The results showed that MEDLINE would have been capable of retrieving 78.7% of the SUNY citations. Almost half of the 21.3% of the citations not retrievable by MEDLINE were from foreign-language journals. A subject analysis of the data showed that in most subject areas MEDLINE was able to provide a relatively small percentage of the journal titles generated by SUNY. These few titles, however, contained a large percentage of the SUNY citations involved in the study.  相似文献

The authors ask whether full-text versions of medical journals are available for searching sooner than their biblographic counterparts. The journals in question are those found in the Comprehensive Core Medical Library (CCML) from BRS Information Technologies and in Mead Data Central's MEDIS Current Journal Files. All journals in these two files are full-text, and neither file contains any indexing features. Update schedules for the full-text version of the MEDLINE journals in each of these files were compared with the most recent issue available in the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) MEDLINE on five different dates. The data revealed substantial fluctuation in comparative currency for MEDIS/MEDLINE over the period of the test. On the date of the last snapshot, June 8, 1990, MEDLINE and MEDIS were offering the same currency for 43% of the journals, and MEDIS was providing first access to 29% of the titles. The CCML/MEDLINE comparison showed less variation. In the last snapshot MEDLINE and CCML were providing access to the same issue for 36% of the journals, and CCML was offering first access to 14%. To determine possible uses for MEDLINE in the hospital library, health practitioners requesting literature searches were provided with both a manual and a MEDLINE search. Patron receptivity to MEDLINE was good, but the manual search was more often preferred. The health practitioners responding to a questionnaire apparently had delegated literature searching and evaluation of material to the hospital librarians, especially when clinically related information was needed. In the community hospitals where both the search and the selection of material are the responsibility of the librarian, MEDLINE can be used as the primary search tool or to supplement material provided.  相似文献

The emergence of CD-ROM (compact disc/read-only memory) versions of the MEDLINE database requires experienced MEDLINE searchers to examine assumptions about searching MEDLINE, since some expectations may not be fulfilled by this new technology. When applied to a particular CD-ROM MEDLINE product, the evaluation procedure involves testing assumptions concerning database contents; mechanics of searching; display, print, and download capabilities; and user-friendly features. The extent to which a CD-ROM product preserves and exploits important MEDLINE strengths should be assessed, e.g., the MeSH controlled vocabulary, the designation of major and minor MeSH emphasis, and the use of subheadings. Search software characteristics that affect ease of searching and quality of results also need to be examined, e.g., the ability to truncate search terms and the order of precedence in which Boolean operators are evaluated. A checklist to assist in the evaluation process is presented, including search examples for use in testing search functions.  相似文献

Over the course of three years, an educational intervention was developed to teach information literacy (IL) skills, change perceptions of IL, and to recalibrate self views of the abilities of first year college students who demonstrate below proficient information literacy skills. The intervention is a modular workshop designed around the three-step analyze, search, evaluate (ASE) model of information literacy, which is easy to remember, easy to adapt to multiple instructional situations, and can provide a foundation for building information literacy skills. Summative evaluation of the intervention demonstrates that students who attend the workshop see an increase in skills and awareness of information literacy as a skill set. Increases in skills, however, were not sufficient to move participants into the proficient range. While workshop participants were able to reassess preworkshop skills, skills gained in the workshop did not result in recalibrated self-views of ability. Like the development of skills, the recalibration of self-assessments may require multiple exposures to information literacy instruction.  相似文献

Most medical school libraries are attempting to provide some form of training for the CD-ROM MEDLINE user, according to this survey conducted in 1989. User guides and vendor-produced tutorials are helpful but are not usually a major aspect of the training. The training sessions vary considerably in length as well as number of attendees, with individualized training being the most widespread. Few facilities offer advanced classes. A core list of training topics has been identified. Evaluation of the training has been done in only a small percentage of the libraries.  相似文献

When the nursing collection at the University of Illinois Library of the Health Sciences was evaluated in 1990 for an accreditation self-study for the National League for Nursing, the evaluation was broadened to study resources, faculty participation in selecting them, and completeness of holdings. To evaluate holdings, lists were checked and conspectus and comparative statistical data were analyzed. Organization and collection development were also described, to document faculty input. User services and on-site and remote access were briefly reviewed to document how resources were made available. The results demonstrated that the library provided an acceptable level of support for nursing studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago.  相似文献

Following the work of the Big Blue project, which examined information skills training provision for students in higher and further education, the Big Blue Connect project investigated the information seeking skills and needs of academic, managerial, administrative and technical staff within their work environments in further education and higher education institutions. Skills required by broad categories of staff were identified. Staff of all types use only a small number of the wide range of resources available to them, rely increasingly on the web and do not perceive themselves as having problems finding and handling information. This paper presents a multifunctional support system for evidence-based medical technology that permits medical publications and reference information to be searched for in external information resources, makes it possible to formulate questions in medically accepted formats and to perform a critical analysis of publications according to the principles of evidence-based medicine, enables clinical and statistical calculators to be used, and permits answers to clinical questions to be automatically formed and archived. The system has been tested at a multi-profile hospital and demonstrated efficiency in clinical decision-making support.  相似文献

Effective delivery of biomedical information to health professionals depends on the availability of systems that are compatible with the information-seeking patterns of health professionals. MEDLINE is a major source of biomedical information, but has been available primarily through libraries via telecommunications networks. The recent availability of MEDLINE on CD-ROM has made it possible to provide MEDLINE directly to clinicians without the associated problems of telecommunications and online use charges. The MEDLINE on CD-ROM Evaluation Forum sponsored by the National Library of Medicine reported on clinicians' use of CD-ROM MEDLINE at seven different clinical settings. This article summarizes the findings from these sites and places them in the context of current understanding of information-seeking behaviors of health professionals. Key issues in the design and development of information technologies in the clinical setting are also articulated.  相似文献

This study sought to identify medical librarians' roles in supporting evidence-based medicine (EBM) practice; determine whether medical librarians' work settings, work experiences, or job titles made a difference in their EBM responsibilities; and find out medical librarians' perceptions of their roles in EBM practice. An online survey was distributed to U.S. medical librarians. The results showed that medical librarians had positive perceptions of their EBM-related responsibilities, which were diverse and specific. Their work experience, work settings, and job title categories related to some of their EBM responsibilities, as well as the nature of some of the responsibilities.  相似文献

The Computers and Medical Information elective is a collaborative effort to expose students to a variety of computer applications for medical information management. The course has a modular format so that students can work with a variety of people who are enthusiastic users of computer-based information systems. The elective emphasizes learning by doing. Faculty introduce concepts and systems and serve as guides in the use of systems. Students have rated the course positively and, after four years as an elective, some of the course's content has been integrated into the required curriculum.  相似文献

对MEDLINE数据库收录的中文生物医学相关期刊的来源指标进行了分析,并与期刊所在学科的各指标的平均值作了对比。结果发现,MEDLINE收录的中文医学期刊文献量不大,平均每刊刊载约260篇,每篇论文平均有5个作者、17条参考文献,文献的引用半衰期为6.175年。MEDLINE收录的中文医学期刊并不侧重海外论文的发表,似乎能吸引更多的基金论文。  相似文献

A survey of users of PsycLIT and MEDLINE on CD-ROM was performed at an academic medical library. The questionnaire was designed to gather information about the user population, satisfaction of the users, the assistance needed to use the systems, and the type of searches being performed. The majority of users were graduate students in the schools of medicine, nursing, and pharmacy. In general, users were satisfied with the performance of the systems. Assistance from a librarian, printed documentation, or another patron was required by 85% of users, and they were generally satisfied with this assistance. Most searches were performed to obtain information on a subject. The results were remarkably similar for both databases.  相似文献

Problems in online retrieval of information concerning medical devices are discussed, including background data regarding legislative history and terminology. An analysis of the results of searching on ten sample topics in this subject area provides a framework for approaching such problems. In addition to a consideration of recall, uniqueness, and overlap, other factors influence database selection and order of consultation. Indexing characteristics of selected health science, engineering, business, and regulatory databases play a major role in medical device information provision.  相似文献

Through casual observations, formal consultations, and educational sessions, the authors have identified various indexing features of the National Library of Medicine's Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) that pose challenges to end users while attempting to obtain relevant retrieval when searching MEDLINE. These problematic features include the use of Explodes, Tree structures, subheadings, Text Word vs. subject heading searching, and central concept searching. End-user search software is becoming more sophisticated with an increasing number of choices offered for search strategy formulation. Methods of instruction to orient the end user to these systems will also have to become more detailed. A review of the literature, that discusses end-user problems with using MEDLINE and MeSH, is included.  相似文献
