Abstract

The synthesis of new poly(ε-caprolactone)(PCL)-b-poly(vinyl acetate)(PVAc) block copolymers was investigated using different combinations of click chemistry, reversible addition-fragmentation transfer (RAFT), and ring opening polymerization (ROP) techniques. Two approaches, “coupling” and “macroinitiator” routes were studied. For the coupling approach, a chain transfer agent comprising an azide function was synthesized and used as initiator for the VAc polymerization. PCL containing an alkyne termination was obtained from a bifunctional initiator bearing an alkyne function and an hydroxyl group. These two functionalized precursors, PVAc and PCL, were coupled by a 1,3 cyclo addition reaction “click chemistry” in order to obtain the corresponding block copolymer. For the macroinitiator approach, PCL-b-PVAc block copolymers were synthesized using a two-step procedure: at first, a PCL macroinitiator with a xanthate end group was prepared by coordinated anionic polymerization of ε-caprolactone; then, the RAFT polymerization of VAc was initiated from the PCL, for the preparation of PCL-b-PVAc block copolymers. Whatever the method used, no detectable quantities of unreacted PVAc or PCL were observed. 1H NMR and size exclusion chromatography analyses indicated successful synthesis of the block copolymers with well-defined structures.  相似文献

A series of poly(?‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol) (PCL‐b‐PEG) block copolymers with different molecular weights were synthesized with a salicylaldimine‐aluminum complex in the presence of monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol). The block copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR, GPC, WAXD, and DSC. The 1H NMR and GPC results verify the block structure and narrow molecular weight distribution of the block copolymers. WAXD and DSC results show that crystallization behavior of the block copolymers varies with the composition. When the PCL block is extremely short, only the PEG block is crystallizable. With further increase in the length of the PCL block, both blocks can crystallize. The PCL crystallizes prior to the PEG block and has a stronger suppression effect on crystallization of the PEG block, while the PEG block only exerts a relatively weak adverse effect on crystallization of the PCL block. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two series of poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) triblock copolymers were prepared by the ring opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) and dibutylmagnesium in 1,4‐dioxane solution at 70°C. The triblock structure and molecular weight of the copolymers were analyzed and confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FTIR, and gel permeation chromatography. The crystallization and thermal properties of the copolymers were investigated by wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results illustrated that the crystallization and melting behaviors of the copolymers were depended on the copolymer composition and the relative length of each block in copolymers. Crystallization exothermal peaks (Tc) and melting endothermic peaks (Tm) of PEG block were significantly influenced by the relative length of PCL blocks, due to the hindrance of the lateral PCL blocks. With increasing of the length of PCL blocks, the diffraction and the melting peak of PEG block disappeared gradually in the WAXD patterns and DSC curves, respectively. In contrast, the crystallization of PCL blocks was not suppressed by the middle PEG block. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

Poly(A)‐block‐poly(B), poly(A)‐block‐poly(B)‐block‐poly(A) and B(A)2 block copolymers were prepared through coordinated anionic ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone (CL) and lactic acid (LA) using hydroxy‐terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as initiator. A wide range of well‐defined combinations of PDMS‐block‐PCL and PDMS‐block‐PLA diblock copolymers, PCL‐block‐PDMS‐block‐PCL and PLA‐block‐PDMS‐block‐PLA triblock copolymers and star‐PDMS(PCL)2 copolymers were thus obtained. The number‐average molar masses and the structure of the synthesized block copolymers were identified using various analytical techniques. The thermal properties of these copolymers were established using differential scanning calorimetry. Considering PDMS‐block‐PCL copolymers, the results demonstrate the complex effect of polymer architecture and PCL block length on the ability of the PDMS block to crystallize or not. In the case of diblock copolymers, crystallization of PCL blocks originated from stacking of adjacent chains inducing the extension of the PDMS block that can easily crystallize. In the case of star copolymers, the same tendency as in triblock copolymers is observed, showing a limited crystallization of PDMS when the length of the PCL block increases. In the case of PDMS‐block‐PLA copolymers, melting and crystallization transitions of the PLA block are never observed. Considering the diblock copolymers, PDMS sequences have the ability to crystallize. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Novel amphiphilic ABA‐type poly(D ‐gluconamidoethyl methacrylate)‐b‐polyurethane‐b‐poly(D ‐gluconamidoethyl methacrylate) (PGAMA‐b‐PU‐b‐PGAMA) tri‐block copolymers were successfully synthesized via the combination of the step‐growth and copper‐catalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Dihydroxy polyurethane (HO‐PU‐OH) was synthesized by the step‐growth polymerization of hexamethylene diisocyanate with poly(tetramethylene glycol). PGAMA‐b‐PU‐b‐PGAMA block copolymers were synthesized via copper‐catalyzed ATRP of GAMA in N, N‐dimethyl formamide at 20°C in the presence of 2, 2′‐bipyridyl using Br‐PU‐Br as macroinitiator and characterized by 1H‐NMR spectroscopy and GPC. The resulting block copolymer forms spherical micelles in water as observed in TEM study, and also supported by 1H NMR spectroscopy and light scattering. Miceller size increases with increase in hydrophilic PGAMA chain length as revealed by DLS study. The critical micellar concentration values of the resulting block copolymers increased with the increase of the chain length of the PGAMA block. Thermal properties of these block copolymers were studied by thermo‐gravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetric study. Spherical Ag‐nanoparticles were successfully synthesized using these block copolymers as stabilizer. The dimension of Ag nanoparticle was tailored by altering the chain length of the hydrophilic block of the copolymer. A mechanism has been proposed for the formation of stable and regulated Ag nanoparticle using various chain length of hydrophilic PGAMA block of the tri‐block copolymer. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The confined crystallization of poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) block in poly(?‐caprolactone)–poly(l ‐lactide) (PCL‐PLLA) copolymers was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, scanning electronic microscopy and atomic force microscopy. To study the effect of crystallization and molecular chain motion state of PLLA blocks in PCL‐PLLA copolymers on PCL crystallization morphology, high‐temperature annealing (180 °C) and low‐temperature annealing (80 °C) were applied to treat the samples. It was found that the crystallization morphology of PCL block in PCL‐PLLA copolymers is not only related to the ratio of block components, but also related to the thermal history. After annealing PCL‐PLLA copolymers at 180 °C, the molten PCL blocks are rejected from the front of PLLA crystal growth into the amorphous regions, which will lead to PCL and PLLA blocks exhibiting obvious fractionated crystallization and forming various morphologies depending on the length of PLLA segment. On the contrary, PCL blocks more easily form banded spherulites after PCL‐PLLA copolymers are annealed at 80 °C because the preexisting PLLA crystal template and the dangling amorphous PLLA chains on PCL segments more easily cause unequal stresses at opposite fold surfaces of PCL lamellae during the growth process. Also, it was found that the growth rate of banded spherulites is less than that of classical spherulites and the growth rate of banded spherulites decreases with decreasing band spacing. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Atactic poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (a‐PHB) and block copolymers of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL‐b‐PEG) were synthesized through anionic polymerization and coordination polymerization, respectively. As demonstrated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) measurements, both chemosynthesized a‐PHB and biosynthesized isotactic PHB (i‐PHB) are miscible with the PEG segment phase of PCL‐b‐PEGs. However, there is no evidence showing miscibility between both PHBs and the PCL segment phase of the copolymer even though PCL has been block‐copolymerized with PEG. Based on these results, PCL‐b‐PEG was added, as a compatibilizer, to both the PCL/a‐PHB blends and the PCL i‐PHB blends. The blend films were obtained through the evaporation of chloroform solutions of mixed components. Excitingly, the improvement in mechanical properties of PCL/PHB blends was achieved as anticipated initially upon the addition of PCL‐b‐PEG. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The chemoenzymatic synthesis of a novel diblock copolymer consisting of a hydrocarbon block of polycaprolactone (PCL) and an epoxy‐based block of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) was achieved by the combination of enzymatic ring‐opening polymerization (eROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). A trichloromethyl‐terminated PCL macrointiator was obtained via Novozyme 435‐catalyzed eROP of ε‐caprolactone from a bifunctional initiator, 2,2,2‐trichloroethanol, under anhydrous conditions. PCL‐b‐PGMA diblock copolymers were synthesized in a subsequent ATRP of glycidyl methacrylate. The kinetics analysis of ATRP indicated a ‘living’/controlled radical polymerization. The macromolecular structure and thermal properties of the PCL macroinitiator and of the diblock copolymer were characterized using NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography and differential scanning calorimetry. The well‐defined PCL‐b‐PGMA amphiphilic diblock copolymer self‐assembled in aqueous solution into nanoscale micelles. The size and shape of the resulting micelles were investigated using dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy and tapping‐mode atomic force microscopy. Functional poly(carbonate‐b‐ester)s were synthesized in buck by ring‐opening polymerization of the carbonate (TMC, MBC, or BMC) with tert‐butyl N‐(2‐hydroxyethyl) carbamate as an initiator, and then with ε‐CL (or ε‐BCL) comonomer. Subsequently, the PMMC‐b‐PCL with pendent carboxyl groups and the PTMC‐b‐PHCL with pendent hydroxyl groups were obtained by catalytic debenzylation. DSC analysis indicated that only one Tg at an intermediate temperature the Tgs of the two polymer blocks. A decrease Tg was observed when an increase contents of ε‐CL incorporated into the copolymers. In contrast, two increased Tms were observed with increasing PCL content. The block copolymers formed micelle in aqueous phase with critical micelle concentrations (cmcs) in the range of 2.23–14.6 mg/L and with the mean hydrodynamic diameters in the range of 100–280 nm, depending on the composition of copolymers. The drug entrapment efficiency and hydrolytic degradation behavior of micelle were also evaluated. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2007  相似文献

Various problems, including high crystallinity, high melting temperature, poor thermal stability, hydrophobicity and brittleness, have impeded many practical applications of poly[(3‐hydroxybutyrate)‐co‐(3‐hydroxyvalerate)] (PHBV) as an environmentally friendly material and biomedical material. In the work reported here, multi‐block copolymers containing PHBV and poly(ethylene glycol) (PHBV‐b‐PEG) were synthesized with telechelic hydroxylated PHBV as a hard and hydrophobic segment, PEG as a soft and hydrophilic segment and 1,6‐hexamethylene diisocyanate as a coupling reagent to solve the problems mentioned above. PHBV and PEG blocks in PHBV‐b‐PEG formed separate crystalline phases with lower crystallinity levels and lower melting temperatures than those of phases formed in the precursors. The crystallite dimensions of the two blocks in PHBV‐b‐PEG were smaller than those of the corresponding precursors. Compared to values for the original PHBV, the maximum decomposition temperature of the PHBV block in PHBV‐b‐PEG was 16.0 °C higher and the water contact angle was 9° lower. In addition, the elongation at break was 2.8% for a pure PHBV fiber but 20.9% for a PHBV/PHBV‐b‐PEG fiber with a PHBV‐b‐PEG content of 30%. PHBV‐b‐PEGs can overcome some of the disadvantages of pure PHBV; it is possible that PHBV might be a good candidate for the formulation of environmentally friendly materials and biomedical materials. A series of poly(?‐caprolactone)–poly(ethylene glycol) (PCL‐PEG) and poly(?‐caprolactone/glycolide)–poly(ethylene glycol) [P(CL/GA)‐PEG] diblock copolymers were prepared by ring‐opening polymerization of ?‐caprolactone or a mixture of ?‐caprolactone and glycolide using monomethoxy PEG (mPEG) as macroinitiator and Sn(Oct)2 as catalyst. The resulting copolymers were characterized using 1H‐NMR, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. Copolymer micelles were prepared using the nanoprecipitation method. The morphology of the micelles was spherical or worm‐like as revealed by transmission electron microscopy, depending on the copolymer composition and the length of the hydrophobic block. Introduction of the glycolide component, even in small amounts (CL/GA = 10), disrupted the chain structure and led to the formation of spherical micelles. Interestingly, the micelle size decreased with the encapsulation of paclitaxel. Micelles prepared from mPEG5000‐derived copolymers exhibited better drug loading properties and slower drug release than those from mPEG2000‐derived copolymers. Drug release was faster for copolymers with shorter PCL blocks than for those with longer PCL chains. The introduction of glycolide moieties enhanced drug release, but the overall release rate did not exceed 10% in 30 days. In contrast, drug release was enhanced in acidic media. Therefore, these bioresorbable micelles and especially P(CL/GA)‐PEG micelles with excellent stability, high drug loading content, and prolonged drug release could be promising for applications as drug carriers. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The poly(l ‐lactide)‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(l ‐lactide) block copolymers (PLLA‐b‐PEG‐b‐PLLA) were synthesized in a toluene solution by the ring‐opening polymerization of 3,6‐dimethyl‐1,4‐dioxan‐2,5‐dione (LLA) with PEG as a macroinitiator or by transterification from the homopolymers [polylactide and PEG]. Two polymerization conditions were adopted: method A, which used an equimolar catalyst/initiator molar ratio (1–5 wt %), and method B, which used a catalyst content commonly reported in the literature (<0.05 wt %). Method A was more efficient in producing copolymers with a higher yield and monomer conversion, whereas method B resulted in a mixture of the copolymer and homopolymers. The copolymers achieved high molar masses and even presenting similar global compositions, the molar mass distribution and thermal properties depends on the polymerization method. For instance, the suppression of the PEG block crystallization was more noticeable for copolymer A. An experimental design was used to qualify the influence of the catalyst and homopolymer amounts on the transreactions. The catalyst concentration was shown to be the most important factor. Therefore, the effectiveness of method A to produce copolymers was partly due to the transreactions. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2014 , 131, 40419.  相似文献

Hexa‐armed star‐shaped poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(L ‐lactide) (6sPCL‐b‐PLLA) with dipentaerythritol core were synthesized by a two‐step ring‐opening polymerization. GPC and 1H NMR data demonstrate that the polymerization courses are under control. The molecular weight of 6sPCLs and 6sPCL‐b‐PLLAs increases with increasing molar ratio of monomer to initiator, and the molecular weight distribution is in the range of 1.03–1.10. The investigation of the melting and crystallization demonstrated that the values of crystallization temperature (Tc), melting temperature (Tm), and the degree of crystallinity (Xc) of PLLA blocks are increased with the chain length increase of PLLA in the 6sPCL‐b‐PLLA copolymers. On the contrary, the crystallization of PCL blocks dominates when the chain length of PLLA is too short. According to the results of polarized optical micrographs, both the spherulitic growth rate (G) and the spherulitic morphology are affected by the macromolecular architecture and the length of the block chains. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. BACKGROUND: Biodegradable block copolymers have attracted particular attention in both fundamental and applied research because of their unique chain architecture, biodegradability and biocompatibility. Hence, biodegradable poly[((R )‐3 ‐hydroxybutyrate)‐block‐(D ,L ‐lactide)‐block‐(ε‐caprolactone)] (PHB‐PLA‐PCL) triblock copolymers were synthesized, characterized and evaluated for their biocompatibility. RESULTS: The results from nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography and thermogravimetric analysis showed that the novel triblock copolymers were successfully synthesized. Differential scanning calorimetry and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction showed that the crystallinity of PHB in the copolymers decreased compared with methyl‐PHB (LMPHB) oligomer precursor. Blood compatibility experiments showed that the blood coagulation time became longer accompanied by a reduced number of platelets adhering to films of the copolymers with decreasing PHB content in the triblocks. Murine osteoblast MC3T3‐E1 cells cultured on the triblock copolymer films spread and proliferated significantly better compared with their growth on homopolymers of PHB, PLA and PCL, respectively. CONCLUSION: For the first time, PHB‐PLA‐PCL triblock copolymers were synthesized using low molecular weight LMPHB oligomer as the macroinitiator through ring‐opening polymerization with D ,L ‐lactide and ε‐caprolactone. The triblock copolymers exhibited flexible properties with good biocompatibility; they could be developed into promising biomedical materials for in vivo applications. Methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (MPEG‐PCL) or MPEG‐b‐poly(L ‐lactide) (MPEG‐PLLA) diblock copolymers were prepared by the polymerization of CL or LA, using MPEG as an initiator in the presence of stannous octoate. MPEG‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone‐ran‐L ‐lactide) (MPEG‐PCLA) diblock copolymers with different chemical composition of PCL and PLLA were also prepared by adjusting the amount of CL and LA from MPEG in the presence of stannous octoate. In degradation study, the degradation of the MPEG‐PCLA diblock copolymers mainly depends on the PCL and PLLA segments present in their structure. MPEG‐PCLA, with intermediate ratio of PCL and PLLA segment, completely degraded after 14 weeks. Meanwhile, partially degraded MPEG‐PCLA segments and parent MPEG segments were observed at higher PCL or PLLA segment contents. Introduction of PLLA into the PCL segments caused a lowering of the crystallinity of the diblock copolymers, thus, inducing a faster incoming of water into the copolymers. We confirmed that the diblock copolymers, with lower degree of crystallinity, have degraded more rapidly. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 46: 1242–1249, 2006. © 2006 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

We report on the synthesis and self‐assembly in water of well‐defined amphiphilic star‐block copolymers with a linear crystalline polyethylene (PE) segment and two or three poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) segments as the building blocks. Initially, alkynyl‐terminated PE (PE‐?) is synthesized via esterification of pentynoic acid with hydroxyl‐terminated PE, which is prepared using chain shuttling ethylene polymerization with 2,6‐bis[1‐(2,6‐dimethylphenyl) imino ethyl] pyridine iron (II) dichloride/methylaluminoxane/diethyl zinc and subsequent in situ oxidation with oxygen. Then diazido‐ and triazido‐terminated PE (PE‐(N3)2 and PE‐(N3)3) are obtained by the click reactions between PE‐? and coupling agents containing triazido or tetraazido, respectively. Finally, the three‐arm and four‐arm star‐block copolymers, PE‐b‐(PEG)2 and PE‐b‐(PEG)3, are prepared by click reactions between PE‐(N3)2 or PE‐(N3)3 and alkynyl‐terminated PEG. The self‐assembly of the resultant amphiphilic star‐block copolymers in water was investigated by dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. It is found that, in water, a solvent selectively good for PEG blocks; these star‐block copolymer chains could self‐assemble to form platelet‐like micelles with insoluble PE blocks as crystalline core and soluble PEG blocks as shell. The confined crystallization of PE blocks in self‐assembled structure formed in aqueous solution is investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. This study synthesizes thermally sensitive block copolymers poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐b‐poly(4‐methyl‐ε‐caprolactone) (PNIPA‐b‐PMCL) and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐b‐poly(4‐phenyl‐ε‐caprolactone) (PNIPA‐b‐PBCL) by ring‐opening polymerization of 4‐methyl‐ε‐caprolactone (MCL) or 4‐phenyl‐ε‐caprolactone (BCL) initiated from hydroxy‐terminated poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) as the macroinitiator in the presence of SnOct2 as the catalyst. This research prepares a PNIPA bearing a single terminal hydroxyl group by telomerization using 2‐hydroxyethanethiol (ME) as a chain‐transfer agent. These copolymers are characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), 1H‐NMR, FTIR, and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The thermal properties (Tg) of diblock copolymers depend on polymer compositions. Incorporating larger amount of MCL or BCL into the macromolecular backbone decreases Tg. Their solutions show transparent below a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and opaque above the LCST. LCST values for the PNIPA‐b‐PMCL aqueous solution were observed to shift to lower temperature than that for PNIPA homopolymers. This work investigates their micellar characteristics in the aqueous phase by fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The block copolymers formed micelles in the aqueous phase with critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) in the range of 0.29–2.74 mg L?1, depending on polymer compositions, which dramatically affect micelle shape. Drug entrapment efficiency and drug loading content of micelles depend on block polymer compositions. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010  相似文献

Poly(l ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) was blended with a series of four‐armed poly(? ‐caprolactone)‐block ‐poly(d ‐lactic acid) (4a‐PCL‐b ‐PDLA) copolymers in order to improve its crystallization rate and mechanical properties. It is found that a higher content of 4a‐PCL‐b ‐PDLA copolymer or longer PDLA block in the copolymer lead to faster crystallization of the blend, which is attributed to the formation of stereocomplex crystallites between PLLA matrix and PDLA blocks of the 4a‐PCL‐b ‐PDLA copolymers. Meanwhile, the PDLA block can improve the miscibility between flexible PCL phase and PLLA phase, which is beneficial for improving mechanical properties. The tensile results indicate that the 10% 4a‐PCL5kb ‐PDLA5k/PLLA blend has the largest elongation at break of about 72% because of the synergistic effects of stereocomplexation between enantiomeric PLAs, multi‐arm structure and plasticization of PCL blocks. It is concluded that well‐controlled composition and content of 4a‐PCL‐b ‐PDLA copolymer in PLLA blends can significantly improve the crystallization rate and mechanical properties of the PLLA matrix. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A series of novel thermoplastic elastomers, based on poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) and polycaprolactone‐block‐polydimethylsiloxane‐block‐polycaprolactone (PCL‐PDMS‐PCL), with various mass fractions, were synthesized through melt polycondensation. In the synthesis of the poly(ester‐siloxane)s, the PCL blocks served as a compatibilizer for the non‐polar PDMS blocks and the polar comonomers dimethyl terephthalate and 1,4‐butanediol. The introduction of PCL‐PDMS‐PCL soft segments resulted in an improvement of the miscibility of the reaction mixture and therefore in higher molecular weight polymers. The content of hard PBT segments in the polymer chains was varied from 10 to 80 mass%. The degree of crystallinity of the poly(ester‐siloxane)s was determined using differential scanning calorimetry and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering. The introduction of PCL‐PDMS‐PCL soft segments into the polymer main chains reduced the crystallinity of the hard segments and altered related properties such as melting temperature and storage modulus, and also modified the surface properties. The thermal stability of the poly(ester‐siloxane)s was higher than that of the PBT homopolymer. The inclusion of the siloxane prepolymer with terminal PCL into the macromolecular chains increased the molecular weight of the copolymers, the homogeneity of the samples in terms of composition and structure and the thermal stability. It also resulted in mechanical properties which could be tailored. Copyright © 2010 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

BACKGROUND: A series of novel biodegradable poly[(sebacic anhydride)‐co‐caprolactone] (PSA‐co‐PCL) triblock copolymers were prepared by melt condensation of acylated PSA and monofunctional hydroxyl‐terminated PCL prepolymers. These copolymers could be used as novel drug delivery carriers with expected good drug permeability due to the PCL component. The degradation rate and mode can be modulated by varying the ratio of monomers in the copolymer. RESULTS: The homopolymers and copolymers were characterized using 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). 1H NMR confirmed the formation of triblock copolymers that comprise a middle PSA block and two side PCL blocks. DSC revealed that the melting temperature and degree of crystallinity for both sebacic anhydride (SA) and caprolactone (CL) components are strongly composition dependent, implying the hindrance effect of the two components on the crystallinity. In vitro degradation experiments showed that the mass loss is significantly accelerated for samples in base buffer solution and more rapid for the copolymers with a higher SA content. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that for SA‐rich copolymer, PSA(80 wt%)‐co‐PCL, surface erosion dominated the degradation mode of the sample. In contrast, for CL‐rich copolymer, PSA(20 wt%)‐co‐PCL, a micropore structure developed at a degradation time of 155 h along the edges of the sample, owing to the hydrolysis of SA. CONCLUSION: It is concluded that the rate and mode of degradation of these copolymers can be tuned by varying the composition of the copolymers.
