The band structures and equifrequency contours of one-dimensional photonic crystals (PCs), which consist of an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) medium and a common dielectric medium, can be dramatically changed by tuning the coupling field intensity (or coupling Rabi frequency, CRF) of the EIT medium. It is found that for a probe light at a fixed frequency, either positive or negative refraction in the EIT PC can be realized with a proper CRF. The behavior of a Gaussian beam (probe light) obliquely incident on such an EIT PC slab is simulated numerically. The probe light beam transmitted from the slab can be shifted transversely in a large range, and negative refraction enhances this effect. The present scenario can be applied in some areas such as quantum optical and photonic device designs.  相似文献

Negative refraction and subwavelength imaging properties of a two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal (PC) slab are studied by the finite-difference time-domain method. The PC consists of a triangular lattice of air holes immersed in a dielectric. For a certain frequency range in the third photonic band, the directions of the group velocities and the phase velocities can be opposite, so the PC can work as a kind of negative refractive-index material. The light radiated from a point source can form a subwavelength image spot through the PC slab. Negative refraction and an effective refractive index of the PC slab n = -1 can be achieved for the incident wave with its incident angle within a certain range.  相似文献

We report the imaging properties of a two-dimensional rectangular-lattice photonic crystal (PC) slab consisting of rectangular metallic rods immersed in a dielectric background. By simulating the electromagnetic wave propagation through such a PC slab with the finite-difference time-domain method, we find that a point source placed in the vicinity of the PC slab can form a good-quality image through the slab. The frequency region where a good-quality image is formed can be controlled by choosing the direction along which the PC slab surface normal is placed.  相似文献

Studies of the refraction and dispersion properties of two-dimensional (2D) photonic-crystal (PC) slab waveguides are reported. The photonic band structure is strongly modified in a slab PC, and only a small number of bands satisfy the guiding conditions imposed by the lack of translation symmetry in the direction perpendicular to the slab; however, it was found that a significant number of the guided modes retain the giant refraction and strong dispersion properties discovered previously in pure 2D PCs. A small change in incident angle resulted in a dramatic change in refraction angle. Furthermore, the dispersion surface exhibited a strong dependence on the frequency, resulting in a superprism effect similar to what has been predicted for pure 2D PCs. In the silicon-based slab PC studied, refraction angles as high as nearly 70 degrees were predicted for incident angles of less than 7 degrees , and frequency components differing by 3% were separated by 15 degrees . The demonstration of giant refraction and superprism phenomena in slab waveguide PCs open the possibility of developing new classes of optical devices that can, for example, be used to develop 2D optical integrated circuits for communications and computing.  相似文献

Photonic crystals (PCs) have many potential applications because of their ability to control light-wave propagation. We have investigated the electromagnetic wave propagation inside an elliptic rod PC slab by means of finite-difference time-domain simulations. The band structure of the PC composed of elliptic rod in the square and triangular lattices is studied by solving Maxwell's equations using the plane wave expansion method. Numerical simulations show that the refractive angle can be tuned greatly by rotating the directors of elliptic rod in the PC slab. Furthermore, an optical switch based on elliptic rod PC structures with nematic liquid crystals was proposed. In the on/off switching system, the partial band gap can be controlled when the normalized operation frequency is 0.28. The modulation induced by liquid crystals created a sharp switching in the photonic devices. Such a mechanism of negative refraction PCs should open up a new application for designing components in photonic integrated circuits.  相似文献

The propagation of electromagnetic (EM) waves in two-dimensional triangular-lattice photonic crystals (PCs) is investigated through dispersion characteristics analysis and numerical simulation of field pattern. The designed PC structure can exhibit all angle negative refraction in the second and the eighth band. A flat superlen formed from such a PC has been designed and its imaging properties have been investigated systematically. Both in band 2 and band 8, a quite high quality image in the opposite side of the slab can be found.  相似文献

Diverse imaging of point source by a two-dimensional photonic crystal slab with square lattice is studied by the finite-difference time-domain method. Given proper frequencies, there seems to be some special directions like channels guiding the light propagation inside the photonic crystal, along which some images will be created. Some photonic crystals (PCs) consisting of complex lattices of dielectric cylinders can have an effective refraction index (neffneff) of −1. Subwavelength imaging by a slab of a honeycomb PC of dielectric cylinders with neff=−1neff=1 is investigated and an open resonator with a quality factor higher than 3000 is designed with the same PC. Air–PC interfaces with low reflection are also used for the slab lens and open resonator.  相似文献

We present some of our recent results for negative refraction in photonic crystals. The concept of negative refraction in photonic crystals is firstly introduced. Then, the propagation of electromagnetic waves in photonic crystals is systematically studied. By the layer Korringa–Kohn–Rostoker method, the coupling efficiency between external plane waves and the Bloch waves in photonic crystals is investigated. It is found that the coupling coefficient is highly angular dependent even for an interface between air with n=1 and a photonic crystal with effective index neff=-1. It is also shown that, for point imaging by a photonic crystal slab, owing to the negative refraction, the influence of the surface termination on the transmission and the imaging quality is significant. Finally, we present results experimentally demonstrating negative refraction in a two-dimensional photonic crystal at optical communication wavelengths. PACS 42.70.Qs; 41.85.Ct; 42.30.Va  相似文献

We experimentally demonstrate the light focusing by negative refraction in a photonic crystal slab superlens at wavelengths lambda of 1.26-1.42 microm. The photonic crystal slab was fabricated on silicon-on-insulator substrate with an interface structure optimized for low reflection and diffraction losses. The light focusing in the photonic crystal slab was clearly observed through the intentional out-of-plane radiation or scattering of guided light in the slab. The minimum focused spot width was limited to 1.8 microm(1.4 lambda) owing to aberrations. The focusing characteristics were in good agreement with those obtained from photonic band and finite-difference time-domain analyses.  相似文献

结合波状结构二维(2D)光子晶体(PC)与入射介质两者的等频面结构分析了PC内部的负折射现象,采用时域有限差分(FDTD)方法模拟了高斯光束在波状结构2DPC内的负折射,分别得到了折射角/入射角以及折射角/入射波长之间的关系曲线,当入射角为45°,入射波段在1485—1530nm区域时,波状结构2DPC的负折射角与入射波长近似呈线性变化关系,并带有明显的PC超棱镜效应,采用端面投影方法对波状结构2DPC的入射端面和出射端面进行处理,改善了负折射时的透过率. 关键词: 光子晶体 负折射 等频面  相似文献

We apply the expanded basis method (EBM) to investigate the behavior of light in a two-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) slab. This method is based on expanded completeness bases, including both the propagation and evanescence modes. We calculate the reflected and transmitted coefficients and the corresponding field distributions in the case of multiple mode transportation. We also show the related phases which exhibit oscillations with the frequency of the incident light.  相似文献

The resonant modes in a quantum well (QW) structure composed of three slabs of two dimensional (2D) photonic crystals with different lattice constants are analyzed with plane-wave-based transfer matrix method (TMM). It is found that the energy band of the well slab submerged into the band gap of barrier slab is discretized into quantized modes and the number of the resonant modes changes with the well slab thickness. A model structure of asymmetrical photonic QW consisting of two slabs of 2D photonic crystals with different lattice constants and one uniform dielectric slab in between is proposed and the resonant modes in it are investigated with the same method. A useful numerical simulation method for theoretical discussion as well as for practical application about photonic QW structure of photonic crystals with different lattice constants is proposed.  相似文献

The problem of subwavelength imaging via a photonic crystal slab lens made of two-dimensional (2D) square arrays of parallel dielectric cylinders in air is studied and discussed theoretically. The finite-difference time-domain method is employed to investigate the unique features of imaging by such lens. We confirm earlier findings that a photonic crystal slab lens can provide the imaging of a point source. By analysing the transmission properties of the proposed structure, we demonstrate that inside the all-angle negative refraction, there are some favourable directions for waves to travel. We show that the surface termination of the photonic crystal is a key parameter to obtain a good quality image. The super-resolution of two sources separated by a distance less than the wavelength is also considered. It is shown that the achievable resolution is limited by the slab length.  相似文献

We apply the expanded basis method (EBM) to investigate the behavior of light in polaritonic photonic crystal (PC) slabs with losses. The influence of losses on transmissivity is studied. It is found that the transmissivity is significantly lowered with the increase of losses, in particular, it is abruptly decreased in the vicinity of transverse-optical-phonon frequency. The electromagnetic (EM) dissipation is mainly dominated by the imaginary part of dielectric constant of PC. The larger the imaginary part of the dielectric constant, the more the EM energy depletion is. The variation of EM dissipation with the number of period layers in the PC slab is approximately linear or oscillatory increase with the number of period layers.  相似文献

We report an experimental demonstration of the superprism effect in a photonic crystal slab at terahertz frequencies. For a 10% frequency variation around 0.28 THz, the refraction angle at the output facet of a wedge-shaped photonic crystal varies by about 15 degrees. A comparison with the predictions of a band structure calculation demonstrates that a three-dimensional treatment, accurately modeling the finite slab thickness and the metallic boundary conditions, is required for even a qualitative agreement with the experimental observations.  相似文献

The electromagnetic wave propagation in a two-dimensional (2D) circular photonic crystal (CPC) is investigated. The CPC structure is composed of air holes in the dielectric background material. The finite element method is used to study the optical and propagating properties of the CPC slab. Numerical simulations show that negative refraction and near-field imaging can appear in a 2D CPC slab. We also find that the high-symmetry CPC slab possesses an optics axis along the vertical direction intersecting the symmetric center. As a result, the CPC slab can exhibit an excellent imaging performance when a source is placed on the optical axis.  相似文献

We propose an integrative biochemical sensor utilizing the dip in the transmission spectrum of a normal singleline defect photonic crystal (PC) waveguide, which has a eontra-directional coupling with another PC waveguide. When the air holes in the PC slab are filled with a liquid analyte with different refractive indices, the dip has a wavelength shift. By detecting the output power variation at a certain fixed wavelength, a sensitivity of 1.2 × 10^-4 is feasible. This structure is easy for integration due to its plane waveguide structure and omissible pump source. In addition, high signal to noise ratio can be expected because signal transmits via a normal single-line defect PC waveguide instead of the PC hole area or analyte.  相似文献
