Development of polymeric blends has become very important for polymer industries because they have been shown to be successful and versatile alternatives to obtain new polymers. In this work binary blends formed by poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) were studied by solution and solid‐state NMR to determine their physical interaction, homogeneity, and compatibility for use as membranes to separate water/alcohol. The NMR results allowed us to acquire information on the microstructure and molecular dynamic behavior of polymer blends. From the NMR solution it was possible to evaluate the microstructure: PVP presented a preferential syndiotactic distribution sequence and PEO presented two regions, one crystalline and the other amorphous. Considering the solid‐state NMR results it was possible to evaluate the molecular dynamics and all binary blends, showing that PEO behaves as a plasticizer; some intermolecular interaction was also observed. An important point was to evaluate the microstructure of the carbonyl PVP using cross polarization/magic‐angle spinning (CP/MAS) and CP/MAS/dipolar decoupling that was not observed before. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Physical blends of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(ethylene isophthalate) (PEI), abbreviated PET/PEI (80/20) blends, and of PET and a random poly(ethylene terephthalate‐co‐isophthalate) copolymer containing 40% ethylene isophthalate (PET60I40), abbreviated PET/PET60I40 (50/50) blends, were melt‐mixed at 270°C for different reactive blending times to give a series of copolymers containing 20 mol % of ethylene isophthalic units with different degrees of randomness. 13C‐NMR spectroscopy precisely determined the microstructure of the blends. The thermal and mechanical properties of the blends were evaluated by DSC and tensile assays, and the obtained results were compared with those obtained for PET and a statistically random PETI copolymer with the same composition. The microstructure of the blends gradually changed from a physical blend into a block copolymer, and finally into a random copolymer with the advance of transreaction time. The melting temperature and enthalpy of the blends decreased with the progress of melt‐mixing. Isothermal crystallization studies carried out on molten samples revealed the same trend for the crystallization rate. The effect of reaction time on crystallizability was more pronounced in the case of the PET/PET60I40 (50/50) blends. The Young's modulus of the melt‐mixed blends was comparable to that of PET, whereas the maximum tensile stress decreased with respect to that of PET. All blend samples showed a noticeable brittleness. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 90: 3076–3086, 2003  相似文献

Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/polyphenoxy blends were prepared by melt blending. Crystalline and thermal behaviors of PET/polyphenoxy blends were verified by use of DSC. The experiment results show that the initial temperature, peak temperature, and ending temperature of cold crystallization increase with increasing phenoxy content. On the contrary, the onset melting temperature, finishing melting temperature, and peak temperature in the first heating and the secondary heating processes decrease with increasing phenoxy content. The crystallization enthalpy and melting enthalpy, as well as the crystallization rate, decrease with increasing phenoxy content. Avrami exponents of the blends are slightly higher than that of pure PET and almost independent of phenoxy content. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 97: 878–885, 2005  相似文献

By in situ polycondensation, a intercalated poly(ethylene terephthalate)/organomontmorillonite nanocomposite was prepared after montmorillonite (MMT) had been treated with a water‐soluble polymer. This nanocomposite was produced to fibers through melt spinning. The resulting nanocomposite fibers were characterized by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The interlayer distance of MMT dispersed in the nanocomposite fibers was further enlarged because of strong shear stress during processing of melt spinning. This was confirmed by XRD test and TEM images. DSC test results showed that incorporation of MMT accelerated the crystallization of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), but the crystallinity of the drawn fibers just had a little increasing compared with that of neat PET drawn fibers. Also compared with pure PET drawn fibers, tensile strength at 5% elongation and thermal stability of the nanocomposite fibers were improved. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(styrene‐ethylene/butylene‐styrene) (SEBS) was used as a compatibilizer to improve the thermal and mechanical properties of recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate)/linear low‐density polyethylene (R‐PET/LLDPE) blends. The blends compatibilized with 0–20 wt % SEBS were prepared by low‐temperature solid‐state extrusion. The effect of SEBS content was investigated using scanning electron microscope, differential scanning calorimeter, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and mechanical property testing. Morphology observation showed that the addition of 10 wt % SEBS led to the deformation of dispersed phase from spherical to fibrous structure, and microfibrils were formed at the interface between two phases in the compatibilized blends. Both differential scanning calorimeter and DMA results revealed that the blend with 20 wt % SEBS showed better compatibility between PET and LLDPE than other blends studied. The addition of 20 wt % of SEBS obviously improved the crystallizibility of PET as well as the modulus of the blends. DMA analysis also showed that the interaction between SEBS and two other components enhanced at high temperature above 130°C. The impact strength of the blend with 20 wt % SEBS increased of 93.2% with respect to the blend without SEBS, accompanied by only a 28.7% tensile strength decrease. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of interchange reactions on the solid‐state structure and mechanical properties of a 70/30 poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/bisphenol A polycarbonate (PC) blend were studied. Increasing reaction levels were obtained by means of lower screw speeds in the extruder. The progressive production of copolymers with the reaction time increased the amount of each component in the other phase. The concomitant degradation of PET led to a maximum in ductility and tensile and impact strengths whereas the modulus of elasticity and the yield stress were held constant. The maximum in properties took place at a reaction time close to 2.6 min; at longer reaction times the negative effect of degradation began to overcome the positive effect of the interchange reactions. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Amorphous films of poly(ethylene terephthalate)/poly(ethylene-2,6-naphthalate) (PET/PEN) blends with different blend ratios were uniaxially drawn by solid-state coextrusion and the structure development during solid state deformation was studied. As-prepared blends showed two Tgs. The lower Tg was ∼72 °C, independent of the blend ratio. In contrast, the higher Tg increased with increasing PEN content. Thus, the coextrusion was carried out around the higher Tg of the sample. At a given draw ratio of 5, which was close to the achievable maximum draw ratio, the tensile strength of the drawn samples from the initially amorphous state increased gradually with increasing PEN content. On the other hand, the tensile modulus was found to decrease initially, reaching a minimum at 40-60 wt% PEN, and then increased as the PEN content increased. The results indicate that we can get the drawn films with a moderate tensile modulus and a high tensile strength. The drawn samples from the blends containing 40-60 wt% of PEN showed a maximum elongation at break, and a maximum thermal shrinkage around 100 °C. Also, the degree of stress-induced crystallinity showed a broad minimum around the blend ratio of 50% of PEN. These morphological characteristics explained well the effects of blend ratio on the tensile modulus and strength of drawn PET/PEN blend films.  相似文献

To improve the processability of micropolymer‐based devices used for biomedical applications, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) was melt‐blended with poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEGs) of different molecular weights (MWs; weight‐average MWs = 200, 800, 2000, and 4000; these PEGS are referred to as PEG200, PEG800, PEG2000, and PEG4000, respectively, in this article). The thermal properties, mechanical properties, and rheological properties of the PLA and the PLA–PEG blends were investigated. The tensile samples’ morphologies showed that the low‐MW PEGs filled molds well. The rheological properties confirmed that the low‐MW PEGs decreased the complex viscosity, and improved the processability. With decreasing PEG MW, the PLA glass‐transition temperature decreased. The nanoindenter data show that the addition of PEG decreased the modulus and hardness of PLA. The morphologies of the tensile samples showed that with increasing PEG MW, the thicknesses of the core layers increased gradually. The elongation at break was improved by approximately 247% with the addition of PEG200. Such methods can produce easily processed biological materials for producing biomedical products. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2017 , 134, 45194.  相似文献

The miscibility and crystallization behavior of poly(ethylene oxide)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PEO/PVA) blends were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and polarizing optical microscopy. Because the glass‐transition temperature of PVA was near the melting point of PEO crystalline, an uncommon DSC procedure was used to determine the glass‐transition temperature of the PVA‐rich phase. From the DSC and DMA results, two glass‐transition temperatures, which corresponded to the PEO‐rich phase and the PVA‐rich phase, were observed. It was an important criterion to indicate that a blend was immiscible. It was also found that the preparation method of samples influenced the morphology and crystallization behaviors of PEO/PVA blends. The domain size of the disperse phase (PVA‐rich) for the solution‐cast blends was much larger than that for the coprecipitated blends. The crystallinity, spherulitic morphology, and isothermal crystallization behavior of PEO in the solution‐cast blends were similar to those of the neat PEO. On the contrary, these properties in the coprecipitated blends were different from those of the neat PEO. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 92: 1562–1568, 2004  相似文献

It is well known that nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) is a powerful method to characterize blends compatibility at the molecular level. In this work binary blends formed by poly(methylmethacrylate)/poly(ethylene oxide), PMMA/PEO, were investigated by different solution and solid state NMR techniques to obtain information on blends homogeneity and compatibility. It was characterized that the values of T1Hρ obtained by variable contact time and delayed contact time experiments, for each composition, were distinct and this fact suggests that regions with different molecular mobilities exist, as a consequence of blending interaction. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The miscibility of high molecular weight poly( -lactide) PLLA with high molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide) PEO was studied by differential scanning calorimetry. All blends containing up to 50 weight% PEO showed single glass transition temperatures. The PLLA and PEO melting temperatures were found to decrease on blending, the equilibrium melting points of PLLA in these blends decreased with increasing PEO fractions. These results suggest the miscibility of PLLA and PEO in the amorphous phase. Mechanical properties of blends with up to 20 weight% PEO were also studied. Changes in mechanical properties were small in blends with less than 10 weight% PEO. At higher PEO concentrations the materials became very flexible, an elongation at break of more than 500% was observed for a blend with 20 weight% PEO. Hydrolytic degradation up to 30 days of the blends showed only a small variation in tensile strength at PEO concentrations less than 15 weight%. As a result of the increased hydrophilicity, however, the blends swelled. Mass loss upon degradation was attributed to partial dissolution of the PEO fraction and to an increased rate of degradation of the PLLA fraction. Significant differences in degradation behaviour between PLLA/PEO blends and (PLLA/PEO/PLLA) triblock-copolymers were observed.  相似文献

Properties of recycled Poly(ethylene terephthalate) were greatly improved. Recycled PET was blended with LLDPE‐g‐MA by low‐temperature solid‐state extrusion. Mechanical properties of the blends were affected obviously by the added LLDPE‐g‐MA. Elongation at break reaches 352.8% when the blend contains 10 wt % LLDPE‐g‐MA. Crystallization behavior of PET phase was affected by LLDPE‐g‐MA content. Crystallinity of PET decreased with the increase of LLDPE‐g‐MA content. FTIR testified that maleic anhydride group in LLDPE‐g‐MA reacted with the end hydroxyl groups of PET and PET‐co‐LLDPE‐g‐MA copolymers were in situ synthesized. SEM micrographs display that LLDPE‐g‐MA phase and PET phase are incompatible and the compatibility of the blends can be improved by the forming of PET‐co‐LLDPE‐g‐MA copolymer. LLDPE‐g‐MA content was less, the LLDPE‐g‐MA phase dispersed in PET matrix fine. With the increase of LLDPE‐g‐MA content, the morphology of dispersed LLDPE‐g‐MA phase changed from spherule to cigar bar, then to irregular spherule.

Miscibility and crystallization behavior have been investigated in blends of poly(butylene succinate) (PBSU) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), both semicrystalline polymers, by differential scanning calorimetry and optical microscopy. Experimental results indicate that PBSU is miscible with PEO as shown by the existence of single composition dependent glass transition temperature over the entire composition range. In addition, the polymer-polymer interaction parameter, obtained from the melting depression of the high-Tm component PBSU using the Flory-Huggins equation, is composition dependent, and its value is always negative. This indicates that PBSU/PEO blends are thermodynamically miscible in the melt. The morphological study of the isothermal crystallization at 95 °C (where only PBSU crystallized) showed the similar crystallization behavior as in amorphous/crystalline blends. Much more attention has been paid to the crystallization and morphology of the low-Tm component PEO, which was studied through both one-step and two-step crystallization. It was found that the crystallization of PEO was affected clearly by the presence of the crystals of PBSU formed through different crystallization processes. The two components crystallized sequentially not simultaneously when the blends were quenched from the melt directly to 50 °C (one-step crystallization), and the PEO spherulites crystallized within the matrix of the crystals of the preexisted PBSU phase. Crystallization at 95 °C followed by quenching to 50 °C (two-step crystallization) also showed the similar crystallization behavior as in one-step crystallization. However, the radial growth rate of the PEO spherulites was reduced significantly in two-step crystallization than in one-step crystallization.  相似文献

The calorimetric properties and dynamic mechanical behaviour of pure poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and its blends with poly(N-vinyl carbazole) (PNVK) have been examined as a function of composition in the range 50-100% PEO. Thermomechanical measurements indicate the presence of a phase separation in this blend. Using the Hoffman-Weeks plot no equilibrium melting point depression was found in any of the blends studied. Some kinetic interfacial effects were detected in the crystallization processes. For all blend compositions, the Avrami exponent is close to that obtained for pure PEO. The DMTA and DTA results suggest an incompatibility in this system.  相似文献

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) were melt-blended and extruded into films in the PLA/PEG ratios of 100/0, 90/10, 70/30, 50/50, and 30/70. It was concluded from the differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis results that PLA/PEG blends range from miscible to partially miscible, depending on the concentration. Below 50% PEG content the PEG plasticized the PLA, yielding higher elongations and lower modulus values. Above 50% PEG content the blend morphology was driven by the increasing crystallinity of PEG, resulting in an increase in modulus and a corresponding decrease in elongation at break. The tensile strength was found to decrease in a linear fashion with increasing PEG content. Results obtained from enzymatic degradation show that the weight loss for all of the blends was significantly greater than that for the pure PLA. When the PEG content was 30% or lower, weight loss was found to be primarily due to enzymatic degradation of the PLA. Above 30% PEG content, the weight loss was found to be mainly due to the dissolution of PEG. During hydrolytic degradation, for PLA/PEG blends up to 30% PEG, weight loss occurs as a combination of degradation of PLA and dissolution of PEG. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) properties of poly(lactic acid)/ poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PLA/PBAT) specimens suggest that only small amounts of poor PLA and/or PBAT crystals are present in their corresponding melt crystallized specimens. In fact, the percentage crystallinity, peak melting temperature and onset re‐crystallization temperature values of PLA/PBAT specimens reduce gradually as their PBAT contents increase. However, the glass transition temperatures of PLA molecules found by DSC and DMA analysis reduce to the minimum value as the PBAT contents of PLAxPBATy specimens reach 2.5 wt %. Further morphological and DMA analysis of PLA/PBAT specimens reveal that PBAT molecules are miscible with PLA molecules at PBAT contents equal to or less than 2.5 wt %, since no distinguished phase‐separated PBAT droplets and tan δ transitions were found on fracture surfaces and tan δ curves of PLA/PBAT specimens, respectively. In contrast to PLA, the PBAT specimen exhibits highly deformable properties. After blending proper amounts of PBAT in PLA, the inherent brittle deformation behavior of PLA was successfully improved. Possible reasons accounting for these interesting crystallization, compatible and tensile properties of PLA/PBAT specimens are proposed. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
