The use of a generalized series solution technique for analyzing semiconductor integrated-optic waveguide devices is presented. This technique can be employed to obtain TE and TM modes for any slab-waveguide structure with an arbitrary index variation, as long as the square of the index in each layer can be fitted to a polynomial function of position. We propose and analyse a novel type of baseband travelling-wave integrated-optic modulator which has a broadened baseband response compared with corresponding modulators of conventional design. Reduction of the radiation loss is essential for the design of integrated-optic devices involving bent waveguides. For wavelength-selective waveguide devices requiring accurate phase control, the effect of bending-induced phase-constant change becomes even more important. The vector-wave mode-matching method is extended for the analysis of both loss and phase characteristics for general integrated-optic bent channel waveguides. For a typical Mach-Zehnder interferometric filter in silica-glass waveguide, the calculated phase-constant change is used in the waveguide path-length compensation which results in excellent agreement between design and measurement 相似文献

A novel measurement system based on an integrated-optic modulator has been used to determine the frequency response of a high-speed GaInAs photodiode. A nominally 8 GHz bandwidth modulator provided a 3 mu W levelled, continuously tunable, modulated optical signal to greater than 21 GHz. A new method for the calibration of intensity modulators and modulated laser diodes at millimeter-wave frequencies is presented. The method uses an integrated-optic modulator as both a mixer and a frequency doubler. To demonstrate the measurement technique an intensity modulator is calibrated over the band 26.5-40 GHz. The measurement system employs no components exceeding 20 GHz (excluding the RF generator), and with relatively minor modifications measurements in excess of 60 GHz are feasible 相似文献

A novel linearization concept to reduce the distortion products from integrated-optic modulators is proposed and analyzed. The proposed linearization concept could be used on any type of modulator with an odd transfer function. A dual parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator was linearized, and the results are compared to those obtained using a conventional linearization concept.
