Concentrating solar thermal systems offer a promising method for large scale solar energy collection. Although concentrating collectors are generally thought of as large-scale stand-alone systems, there is a huge opportunity to use novel concentrating solar thermal systems for rooftop applications such as domestic hot water, industrial process heat and solar air conditioning for commercial, industrial and institutional buildings. This paper describes the thermal performance of a new low-cost solar thermal micro-concentrating collector (MCT), which uses linear Fresnel reflectors, and is designed to operate at temperatures up to 220 °C. The modules of this collector system are approximately 3 m long by 1 m wide and 0.3 m high. The objective of the study is to optimise the design to maximise the overall thermal efficiency. The absorber is contained in a sealed enclosure to minimise convective losses. The main heat losses are due to natural convection inside the enclosure and radiation heat transfer from the absorber tube. In this paper we present the results of a computational and experimental investigation of radiation and convection heat transfer in order to understand the heat loss mechanisms. A computational model for the prototype collector has been developed using ANSYS–CFX, a commercial computational fluid dynamics software package. The numerical results are compared to experimental measurements of the heat loss from the absorber, and flow visualisation within the cavity. This paper also presents new correlations for the Nusselt number as a function of Rayleigh number.  相似文献

Over the last decade the technological advances observed in solar collector materials, namely better spectrally selective absorber coatings and ultra clear glass covers, contribute to performance improvements and translate into higher operational temperature ranges with higher efficiency values. While the use of Evacuated Tube Collectors (ETCs) is becoming widespread in the thermal conversion of solar energy, non-evacuated solar collectors still hold advantages at manufacturing, reliability and/or cost levels, making them interesting and competitive for a large range of applications, in particularly, in temperature ranges up to 80 °C. However, these advantages have not prevented the major drawback of these collectors when compared to ETCs: thermal losses due to internal convection which prevent their general use in the range of operating temperatures up to 150 °C.Insulation, double glazing or selective coatings can be used in non-evacuated collectors to reduce heat losses. To prevent internal convection losses in these solar collectors, different control strategies have been studied, such as the adoption of different inert gases within the collector cavity, physical barriers reducing air flow velocities over the absorber or cover surfaces or the use of concentration. In the present article, an assessment of adopting such internal convection control strategies in a CPC collector is presented. Each of the presented strategies is assessed in terms of the resulting collector optical and thermal characterization parameters and yearly collector yield. For this purpose, an integrated tool allowing the design, optical and thermal characterization of CPC collectors was developed. The results obtained provide valuable guidelines for anyone wishing to implement any of these strategies in a new collector design.  相似文献

This study experimentally investigates a device for inserting an absorbing plate made of aluminium cans into the double-pass channel in a flat-plate solar air heater (SAH). This method substantially improves the collector efficiency by increasing the fluid velocity and enhancing the heat-transfer coefficient between the absorber plate and air. These types of collectors had been designed as a proposal to use aluminium materials to build absorber plates of SAHs at a suitable cost. The collector had been covered with a 4-mm single glass plate, in order to reduce convective loses to the atmosphere. Three different absorber plates had been designed and tested for experimental study. In the first type (Type I), cans had been staggered as zigzag on absorber plate, while in Type II they were arranged in order. Type III is a flat plate (without cans). Experiments had been performed for air mass flow rates of 0.03 kg/s and 0.05 kg/s. The highest efficiency had been obtained for Type I at 0.05 kg/s. Also, comparison between the thermal efficiency of the SAH tested in this study with the ones reported in the literature had been presented, and a good agreement had been found.  相似文献

The present study deals with heat storage performance investigation of integrated solar pond and collector system. In the experimental work, a cylindrical solar pond system (CSPS) with a radius of 0.80 m and a depth of 2.0 m and four flat plate collectors dimensions of 1.90 m × 0.90 m was built in Cukurova University in Adana, Turkey. The CSPS was filled with salty water of various densities to form three salty water zones (Upper Convective Zone, Non-Convective Zone and Heat Storage Zone). Heat energy collected by collectors was transferred to the solar pond storage zone by using a heat exchanger system which is connected to the solar collectors. Several temperature sensors connected to a data acquisition system were placed vertically inside the CSPS and at the inlet and outlet of the heat exchanger. Experimental studies were performed using 1, 2, 3 and 4 collectors integrated with the CSPS under approximately the same condition. The integrated solar pond efficiencies were calculated experimentally and theoretically according to the number of collectors. As a result, the experimental efficiencies are found to be 21.30%, 23.60%, 24.28% and 26.52%; the theoretical efficiencies to be 23.42%, 25.48%, 26.55% and 27.70% for 1, 2, 3 and 4 collectors, respectively. Theoretical efficiencies were compared with the experimental results and hence a good agreement is found between experimental and theoretical efficiency profiles.  相似文献

Photovoltaic-thermal collectors (or PV-T collector) are hybrid collectors where PV modules are integrated as an absorber of a thermal collector in order to convert solar energy into electricity and usable heat at the same time. In most of the cases, the hybrid collectors are made by the superposition of a PV module on the thermal absorber of a solar collector. In this paper, the approach is different and is to analyze thermal and optical properties related to both PV and solar thermal functions in order to identify an optimum combination leading to a maximum overall efficiency. Indeed, although these two functions do not exploit the same range of radiation wavelengths, thermal and PV functions are not so complementary due to photo-conversion thermal dependency. In this context, an alternative PV cell lamination has been developed with increased optical and thermal performance. The improvements were evaluated around 2 mA/cm2 in terms of current density in comparison to a standard module encapsulation. Based on this technique, a real size PV-T module has been built and tested at Fraunhofer solar test facilities. The results show a global efficiency of the PV-T collector above 87% (79% thermal efficiency plus 8.7% electrical efficiency, based on the absorber area).  相似文献

Parabolic collectors of commercial solar thermal power plants are subject to variable convection heat transfer from the receiver tube. In the present study heat transfer from a receiver tube of the parabolic trough collector of the 250 kW solar power plants in Shiraz, Iran, is studied taking into account the effects of variation of collector angel of attack, wind velocity and its distribution with respect to height from the ground. The governing equations for the two-dimensional steady state wind flow include continuity, momentum and energy equations and RNG-based kε model for turbulence scheme. Finite volume discretization method is used to solve the governing equations with wall function boundary condition and the SIMPLE approach is employed to iterate for the pressure correction and convergence of the velocity field. The momentum equation contains buoyancy force when the buoyancy effect is high and force convection effect is low.Computation is carried out for various wind velocities and different collector orientations with respect to wind direction. For solution of the energy equation, temperature of the receiver tube is taken as 350 K and ambient temperature is assumed to be 300 K. Various recirculation and temperature fields were observed around the receiver tube for different flow conditions. Effect of collector orientation on the average Nu number for the receiver tube was found negligible when the wind speed is low (Re⩽4.5×105 based on the collector aperture). But when the wind velocity is high (Re>4.5×105), the collector effect on the variation of Nu around the glass cover of the absorber tube is considerable.  相似文献

The study includes calculations for both the thermal performance and the mechanical behaviour of a gas-filled, flat plate solar collector without external gas expansion, i.e., a collector with varying gas volume and gas pressure and movement in both cover glass and absorber. Classical theories for the thermal performance are combined with a finite-element method to investigate which factors have an impact from the mechanical stress point of view. This article describes major results for collectors with copper and aluminium absorbers combined with different inert gases. It is shown that a collector may be designed which uses less material than a standard collector but achieves at least the same thermal performance, by using a thinner collector and a thinner absorber and a suitable gas filling other than air. If copper is used in absorber and tubes, a 0.15 mm thick absorber together with a tube-to-tube distance of 103 mm results in the same performance as a 0.3 mm absorber with a 144 mm tube-to-tube distance, but the former will use 25% less material. The use of copper can be further reduced if the absorber is made of aluminium and the tubes are made of copper. The factor of safety for thick (>0.5 mm) aluminium absorbers is, however, not as large as it is for copper absorbers.  相似文献

The integrated collector storage (ICS) is the type of solar water heater that has retained its existance for well over a century. The flat absorber plate ICS collector type is a relatively recent addition. Being effective, low cost and simple to manufacture, their importance has been further enhanced by the recent upsurge in efforts to effectively tap renewable energy resources. Having different inclinations based on latitude, the design of flat plate heaters can benefit from extensive amount of research on the topic of natural convection in inclined cavities. More than half-century of exploration on inclined cavities has witnessed added activity particularly in the last three decades. Despite this consistent research, efforts to apply the outcomes to the flat plate collectors have been few and collectors reported in the literature appear to be deficient in embedding the knowledge into the design parameters. For an ICS type heater, natural convection studies gain even more weight as the apparatus is functionally an assembly of two natural convection cavities: an air cavity (space between the absorber and cover plates) and a water cavity (water storage tank). An extensive review of previous studies on inclined cavities relevant to flat plate collectors has been complied and discussed. Experimental tests of the ICS heater have been conducted for controlled heat flux up to 400 W. The thermal performance of the heater is recorded experimentally at angles 0–60° from horizontal, in 15° intervals. CFD analysis is also carried out for the same and is found to be in good agreement with previous studies. It was found that for any given constant value of heat flux, the performance of the heater is a strong function of the angle of inclination. The optimum configuration of the heater for Edinburgh conditions (latitude 55°55′N) is also evaluated. The present study also covers the convective behavior inside the water tank, which has been neglected in the past. A step-by-step build-up approach is adopted to resolve water tank behavior as its treatment as a simple natural convention cavity is invalid. This article would serve as a design guide for developing heaters tailored for a specific geographical location.  相似文献

The performance of a compact phase change material (PCM) solar collector based on latent heat storage was investigated. In this collector, the absorber plate–container unit performs the function of both absorbing the solar energy and storing PCM. The solar energy was stored in paraffin wax, which was used as a PCM, and was discharged to cold water flowing in pipes located inside the wax. The collector's effective area was assumed to be 1 m2 and its total volume was divided into 5 sectors. The experimental apparatus was designed to simulate one of the collector's sectors, with an apparatus-absorber effective area of 0.2 m2. Outdoor experiments were carried out to demonstrate the applicability of using a compact solar collector for water heating. The time-wise temperatures of the PCM were recorded during the processes of charging and discharging. The solar intensity was recorded during the charging process. Experiments were conducted for different water flow rates of 8.3–21.7 kg/h. The effect of the water flow rate on the useful heat gain (Qu) was studied. The heat transfer coefficients were calculated for the charging process. The propagation of the melting and freezing front was also studied during the charging and discharging processes. The experimental results showed that in the charging process, the average heat transfer coefficient increases sharply with increasing the molten layer thickness, as the natural convection grows strong. In the discharge process, the useful heat gain was found to increase as the water mass flow rate increases.  相似文献

Solar thermal collectors have significant importance due to its wide use in solar thermal technology. Augmentation of heat transfer is a key challenge for solar thermal technology. A quarter circular solar thermal collectors is investigated throughout the paper introducing carbon nanotube (CNT)–water nanofluid in the cavity. Tilt angle of this type of collector plays a vital role and heat transfer can be maximized for a particular tilt angle and solid volume fraction of the nanofluid. Galerkin weighted residual of FEM has been applied for the numerical solution of the problem. Grid independency test and code validation have been assessed for the accuracy of numerical solution. In this paper a wide range of solid volume fraction (δ = 0 to δ = 0.12) and tilt angle (ϕ = 0 to ϕ = 60°) has been investigated for Rayleigh number (Ra = 105–108) with varying dimensionless times. It has been found that both solid volume fraction and tilt angle play vital roles for the augmentation of heat transfer and a good heat transfer characteristic can be obtained by compromising between these two parameters. The results are shown using streamline, isotherm contour and related graph and chart.  相似文献

The work presented in this article aims to investigate a PV/T hybrid solar window on a system level. A PV/T hybrid is an absorber on which solar cells have been laminated. The solar window is a PV/T hybrid collector with tiltable insulated reflectors integrated into a window. It simultaneously replaces thermal collectors, PV-modules and sunshade. The building integration lowers the total price of the construction since the collector utilizes the frame and the glazing in the window. When it is placed in the window a complex interaction takes place. On the positive side is the reduction of the thermal losses due to the insulated reflectors. On the negative side is the blocking of solar radiation that would otherwise heat the building passively. This limits the performance of the solar window since a photon can only be used once. To investigate the sum of such complex interaction a system analysis has to be performed. In this paper results are presented from such a system analysis showing both benefits and problems with the product. The building system with individual solar energy components, i.e. solar collector and PV modules, of the same size as the solar window, uses 1100 kW h less auxiliary energy than the system with a solar window. However, the solar window system uses 600 kW h less auxiliary energy than a system with no solar collector.  相似文献

Application of nanofluids in thermal energy devices such as solar collectors is developing day by day. This paper reports the results of experiments on a flat plate solar collector where the working fluid is SiO2/ethylene glycol (EG)–water nanofluid with volume fractions up to 1%. The thermal efficiency and performance characteristics of solar collector are obtained for mass flow rates between 0.018 and 0.045 kg/s. The curve characteristics of solar collector indicate that the effects of particle loading on the thermal efficiency enhancement are more pronounced at higher values of heat loss parameter. The results of this work elucidate the potential of SiO2 nanoparticles to improve the efficiency of solar collectors despite its low thermal conductivity compared to other usual nanoparticles.  相似文献

A mathematical model for the overall thermal efficiency of the solar-powered high temperature differential dish-Stirling engine with finite-rate heat transfer, regenerative heat losses, conductive thermal bridging losses and finite regeneration processes time is developed. The model takes into consideration the effect of the absorber temperature and the concentrating ratio on the thermal efficiency; radiation and convection heat transfer between the absorber and the working fluid as well as convection heat transfer between the heat sink and the working fluid. The results show that the optimized absorber temperature and concentrating ratio are at about 1100 K and 1300, respectively. The thermal efficiency at optimized condition is about 34%, which is not far away from the corresponding Carnot efficiency at about 50%. Hence, the present analysis provides a new theoretical guidance for designing dish collectors and operating the Stirling heat engine system.  相似文献

A U-type natural circulation heat pipe system is designed and applied to a parabolic trough solar collector for generating mid-temperature steam. Thermal performance of the heat pipe system is investigated experimentally. A detailed heat transfer analysis is performed on thermal behaviors of the system, especially the solar collector. The results show that the system can generate mid-temperature steam of a pressure up to 0.75 MPa. The thermal efficiency is found to be 38.52% at discharging pressure of 0.5 MPa during summer time.  相似文献

We describe a mathematical model for the optical and thermal performance of non-evacuated CPC solar collectors with a cylindrical absorber, when the heat loss coefficient is temperature-dependent. Detailed energy balance at the absorber, reflector and cover of the CPC cavity yields heat losses as a function of absorber temperature and solar radiation level. Using a polynomial approximation of those heat losses, we calculate the thermal efficiency of the CPC collector. Numerical results show that the performance of the solar collector (η vs. ΔTf(0)/Icoll) is given by a set of curves, one for each radiation level. Based on the solution obtained to express the collector performance, we propose to plot efficiency against the relation of heat transfer coefficients at absorber input and under stagnation conditions. The set of characteristic curves merge, then, into a single curve that is not dependent on the solar radiation level. More conveniently, linearized single plots are obtained by expressing efficiency against the square of the difference between the inlet fluid temperature and the ambient temperature divided by the solar radiation level. The new way of plotting solar thermal collector efficiency, such that measurements for a broad range of solar radiation levels can be unified into a single curve, enables us to represent the performance of a large class of solar collectors, e.g. flat plate, CPC and parabolic troughs, whose heat loss functions are well represented by second degree polynomials.  相似文献

Investigating the complicated thermal physics mechanisms of the parabolic trough solar collector systems plays a vital role in efficiently utilizing the solar energy. In this paper, the least squares support vector machine (LSSVM) method is developed to model and optimize the parabolic trough solar collector system. Numerical simulations are implemented to evaluate the feasibility and efficiency of the LSSVM method, where the sample data derived from the experiment and the simulation results of two solar collector systems with 30 m2 and 600 m2 solar fields, and the complicated relationship between the solar collector efficiency and the solar flux, the flow rate and the inlet temperature of the heat transfer fluid (HTF) is extracted. Some basic rules, such as the solar collector efficiency increases with the increase of the solar flux and the flow rate of the heat transfer fluid, and decreases with the increase of the inlet temperature of the HTF, are obtained, which indicates the LSSVM method is competent to optimize the solar collector systems. As a result, the new approach will provide meaningful data for developing the parabolic trough solar thermal power plant in China.  相似文献

An experimental flat plate solar collector operating in conjunction with a closed-end oscillating heat pipe (CEOHP) offers a reasonably efficient and cost effective alternative to conventional solar collector system that use heat pipes. The CEOHP system described in this study relies on the natural forces of gravity and capillary action and dose not require an external power source. The flat plate collector consisted of a 1 mm thick sheet of black zinc covered by a glass enclosure with a collecting area of 2.00 × 0.97 m2 , an evaporator located on the collecting plate, and a condenser inserted into a water tank. A length of 0.003 ID copper tubing was bent into multiple turns at critical points along its path and used to channel the working fluid throughout the system. R134a was used as the working fluid. Efficiency evaluations were conducted during daylight hours over a two month period and included extensive monitoring and recording of temperatures with type-K thermocouples placed at key locations throughout the system. The results confirmed the anticipated fluctuation in collector efficiency dependant on the time of day, solar energy irradiation, ambient temperature and flat plate mean temperature. An efficiency of approximately 62% was achieved, which correlates with the efficiency of the more expensive heat pipe system. The CEOHP system offers the additional benefits of corrosion free operation and absence of freezing during winter months.  相似文献

A finite-volume-based computational study of transient laminar flow and heat transfer (neglecting natural convection) leading to periodic state within a square cavity with inlet and outlet ports due to an oscillating velocity at the inlet port is presented. The inlet port is placed at the top of the left wall and the outlet port is positioned at the bottom of the right wall of the cavity. The inlet velocity varies sinusoidally with time for a range of dimensionless frequencies (St = 0.1, 0.5, 1, 2 and 10). The instantaneous Reynolds number also varies sinusoidally between 100 and 500 and Pr = 5. It takes more cycles for the temperature field to reach its periodic state in comparison to the corresponding flow field. For cases with higher Strouhal numbers, it takes more cycles to reach a periodic state. The throughflow stream undergoes cyclic growth and decay. The throughflow is in constant contact with the clockwise rotating primary vortex, which in turn interacts with two rotating vortices on the left wall. A counterclockwise rotating vortex at the top right corner also experiences periodic growth and decay. Minimal heat transfer is consistently observed on the left wall. In contrast, certain segments of the other three walls and the boundary of the throughflow are zones of active heat exchange. For St = 0.1, the mean Nusselt numbers on the four walls clearly exhibit large amplitudes of oscillation and periodicity. With St = 10, the amplitudes of oscillation on various walls are generally degraded. These behaviors are directly linked to the relation between the period of oscillation and the convection time scale. Regardless of the Strouhal number, heat transfer enhancement in comparison to the steady state case is consistently observed. The best heat transfer rate is realized when the Strouhal number is close to unity. This is the case when the period of the incoming stream resonates with the convection time scale.  相似文献

The design and performance of a solar (and/or natural gas) powered adsorption (desiccant-vapor) heat pump for residential cooling (and heating) is described. The entire system is modeled and analyzed: adsorption heat pump itself, ice thermal storage reservoir, and solar collectors. The adsorption heat pump embodies patent pending improvements to the state-of-the-art which elevate coefficient of performance for cooling from a maximum of 1.2 reported in the literature to a conservatively predicted minimum of 1.5. The adsorption device utilizes economical, robust configurations (shell-and-tube) and components (helical annular finned tubes, multi-lumen tubes) commonly employed in heat exchangers in a manner heretofore untried, as well as other enhancements (metal wool to diffuse heat throughout the adsorbent). The vessel is all aluminum and the adsorbent-refrigerant pair is carbon-ammonia. The ice reservoir provides 24 h cooling. Two types of solar collector are determined to be satisfactory at the selected operating temperature of 170 °C: (1) compound parabolic concentrator with high concentration ratio (10+) and automatic tilt adjustment, and (2) evacuated (0.001 atm) flat panel, similar to atmospheric pressure versions employed for domestic water heating.  相似文献

The focus of the current study is the wind loads on a 11.92 m section of parabolic trough collector with an aperture of 5.76 m, located in Beijing, PR China. This paper presents selected results of full-scale field measurements of wind loads and wind pressure on the solar collector. The field data such as wind speed, wind direction and wind pressures are simultaneously measured from the solar collector. The measured data are analyzed to obtain the information on boundary layer wind characteristics, wind pressures and wind loads on the solar collector. The results presented in this paper are expected to be of considerable interest and of use to researchers and engineers involved in analysis and design of parabolic trough solar collectors.  相似文献
