A Survey of the Awareness Rate of Common Mental Health in Officers and Soldiers of a PLA Unit

Objective To study the awareness of common mental health in some PLA officers and soldiers and provide clinical evidence for service of mental health in the military troop.Methods In this study,921 soldiers from an army troop were surveyed by innominate questionnaire.Results The mean correct rate was 46.8% and the awareness rate was 12.4%.The mean correct rate was higher in officers than that in soldiers and non-commissioned officers;Meanwhile,the mean correct rate was the highest in soldiers with undergraduate degrees,and decreased progressively from degrees of junior college,senior middle school and junior middle school.79.9% of the soldiers surveyed were aware of the importance of mental health,60.7% learned mental health knowledge from school or after they joined the Army.Only less than 10.0% was inclined to seek help from specialized mental health experts when they had psychological problems,43.3% let it out by communicating with comrades-in-arms,and 21.4% sought help from political instructors.Nearly 80.0% did not accept or denied local psychological consultation although some consultation organizations were available in their unit.Conclusion Awareness level of mental health in some PLA troops are not satisfactory.Effective health service should be provided to promote mental health level of the troops.
