Abstract:Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is one of the most pressing public health issues facing the whole world today. Periodontitis is a chronic disease with high incidence and is also the cause of many systemic diseases. Recent researches have shown a link between COVID-19 and other chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and chronic kidney disease. The purpose of this study was to explore whether the potential association between severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-COV-2) infection and the main pathogenesis of periodontitis. Periodontitis was not found in summary to be directly associated with the incidence rate of COVID-19, but may eventually influence COVID-19 prognosis in an indirect manner. A better understanding of the relationship could not only prevent periodontitis, but also reduce the incidence of adverse prognosis for COVID-19. Thus providing new research line of thought and theoretical basis for the treatment of COVID-19 patients with periodontitis.
Keywords:periodontitis  Corona Virus Disease-19 (Covid-19)  SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) coronavirus  spike protein  cytokine storm
