Abstract: | In surgery of the craniofacial skeleton, the current simulation planning systems extrapolate 3D surgical movements and outcomes based on 2D radiographs, which are inadequate for complex surgical movements. This paper presents a 3D treatment-planning system based on computerized tomography (CT) data. Based upon MedGraphics software, a 3D data field is constructed out of the sectional image stack through linear interpolation, and a seeded region-growing algorithm is adopted for the objective tissue segmentation. With the marching cubes algorithm, the triangular mesh model and 3D geometric model of diseased facial skeleton are reconstructed. Then the model is cut, the segments are moved or rotated to their predicted positions, and angles and distances are measured. After the triangular mesh model is decimated, an RP model is manufactured for surgical simulation and a prosthesis is designed. The system has been clinically used for more than 50 cases and technically validated with success. |
