Abstract:In the present study the OH infrared absorption spectra of a group of heavily Mg-doped LiNbO_3 crystals codoped with trivalent or divalent cation impurity are investigated.Some of them are correlated with the ESR results.Attempt to find a relationship between the spectra and the site of incorporation of impurities,which is strongly affected by the so-called Mg doping level threshold effect.A main OH band peaked at 3536cm~(-1) occurs in all the samples.The band is attributed to the OH stretching vibration in the Mg_(Nb)-OH-Mg_(Li) complex.There are some additional OH bands occurred in the Me~(3+),Mg codoped LiNbO_3 samples(Me=Fe, Cr and Nd respectively).They are attributed to the OH stretching vibration in the Me_(Nb)- OH-Mg_(LI) complex,whose peak position depends on the charge misfit and the ionic radius of the cation impurities.There is no additional OH band occurred in the Mg,Er:LiNbO_3,Mg, Ho:LiNbO_3 and Mg,Tm:LiNbO_3 crystals.A simple scheme is proposed that depicts whether such new feature appears,depending on the ionic radius and the electronegativity of the Me~(3+)
