Abstract: | The explosive growth of the Internet over the past decade has been fuelled by the prospects of electronic commerce and E-business. Information security has become a critical part of the burgeoning world of electronic transactions, and the presence of a supporting public-key infrastructure (PKI) has become the most viable option for this important component.1 This article begins by identifying the elements of a PKI. Next, it describes ways in which certificates may be validated, and discusses the impact of interoperability on widespread PKI usage. The article concludes with a summary of PKI concerns. |
