Abstract:Most studies of the cutting mechanism are performed under the assumption that the material is an isotropic and homogeneous continuum. The effect of material anisotropy is often not included in the theoretical analysis. In this paper, the relation between the crystal orientation and the cutting force fluctuation is analyzed based on a microplastic mechanical model. Analytical results show that the crystal orientation of the material being cut exerts a great influence on ultraprecision machining process. The shear strength of a crystallite is not a constant for a given material but varies with the change of crystallographic cutting direction. The trend in the variation of theoretical equivalent Taylor factor M' which indicates the shear strength compares well with that of published experimental data of cutting force.
