| Abstract: | The surface properties of activated carbons play a significant role especially when these materials are used for adsorption from liquid phases. The present paper gives an overview of the oxygenated functional groups and nitrogenated functional groups. Different ways to assess and identify these groups are compared with emphasis on the chemical methods. The activation and modification of activated carbons are also described. |
