Abstract:In order to achieve structural resilience after earthquakes, based on the earthquake resilient rocking (ERR) column technology with steel slit dampers, the ERR column was improved by increasing the number of bolts to reduce the local slippage between the end of steel slit damper and the connecting plate. To further study the mechanical properties and the performance resilience of the improved ERR column, the quasi-static tests on eight full-scaled ERR columns were carried out. The influences of axial compression ratio, plate thickness, and the number of steel slit dampers on the seismic performance of ERR columns were studied. It is indicated that, with the ‘strong-column/weak-damper’ design philosophy, the plastic deformation of ERR columns under major earthquake would be concentrated on the replaceable steel slit dampers. Stable hysteretic performance of ERR columns are achieved. The horizontal load carrying capacity of ERR columns increases with the increase of the axial compression ratio and damper thickness. By adding two steel slit dampers at the bottom of the column perpendicular to the loading direction, the lateral load carrying capacity and ultimate deformation of ERR columns are increased by 11% and 14%, respectively.
