Detection for PCNA in liver tissue with severe hepatitis

Aims: To observe the regeneration of hepatocytes in severe hepatitis. Methods: Liver samples from 48 patients with severe hepatitis were detected for proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) by immunohistochemical methods.Results: The labelling index (L. I. ) of PCNA-positive hepatocytes was higher in the patients with acute severe hepatitis and subacute hepatitis than in the patients with chronic severe hepatitis ( P< 0.01) . PCNA positivity was significantly higher in the patients who survived than in the patients who died (P<0.01) .Conclusion; Hepatocyte regeneration could take place in severe hepatitis , including acute severe hepatitis, after development of massive necrosis of liver cells and detection for PCNA in liver tissue could be useful for prognostic evaluation.
