Transesophageal Echocardiography in Cardiovascular Surgery: A Report of 205 Cases

ObjectiveTo analysis the impact on surgical and anesthetic management of intraoperative TEE.MethodsIn 205 procedures, comprehensive TEE examinations were performed before, during, and after cardiopulmonary bypass, and when necessary. ResultsAltogether, 73 management changes were made based on TEE findings. By our definition, minor changes were 22 (10.7%) and major ones were 51 (24.8%). Valvular related changes were significantly higher than non-valvular ones (49 vs 24, 67.1% vs 32.9%). Preoperative diagnostic problems were 10 (4.8%), significant dysfunction after bypass was 9(4.4%), and 6(2.9%) patients were returned to cardiopulmonary bypass for further treatment. ConclusionIntraoperative TEE plays an important role in cardiovascular operations. More attempts are deserved to focus on monitoring ventricular function.
