Clinicpathological features and surgical treatment for solid pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas

Objective To investigate the elinic-pathologieat features of solid pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas（SPTP）and evaluate the efficacy of surgical treatment. Methods From Nov. 2003 to J un. 2010,24 cases of SPTP confirmed pathologically were subjected to surgical resection in our centre. The clinical data were analyzed retrospectively. Results Among 24 cases, there were 7 males,17 females（70. 83%）, and the mean age for females was 25.3 years old. The neoplasm was found in the pancreatic head in 5 cases, in body-neck in 8 and in the body-tail in 11 ,with no specificity in clinical manifestation. None of the patients had positive serum amylase and digestive tumor markers preoperatively. Twenty-four cases were subjected to surgical resection with no peri-operative death, and postoperative pancreatic fistula occurred in 3 cases. No evidence of local recurrence or metastasis was found during the follow-up period after complete resection of the primary tumor. Conclusion SPTP is a rare pancreatic neoplasm with malignant potentiality, and mainly affected young women. Surgical resection for SPTP can offer a good long-term survival for patients.
