| Abstract: | The internal structure of the human mandible was studied on cross sections of 10 specimens. Each half of the mandible was sawed up into 12 segments. The height, width and thickness of the compact substance of the buccal, lingual and inferior bony plates were measured with vernier calipers. After photographs have been taken, the area of each section and the area occupied by the compact substance of the same section were obtained by an image analysis instrument. The arrangemen t of the trabeculae and that of the Haversian system were observed under surgical, light, and scanning electron microscopes. Finally, the correlation between the internal structure and its function, and the clinical significance in fracture of mandible were discussed. |
