Abstract:The structurally well-defined SiO2/PMMA core/shell composite nanoparticles were prepared via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerisation(SI-ATRP). Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) brush was synthesised on narrowly size-distributed colloidal silica particles with surface-grafted α-bromoester initiator in alcoholic media at ambient temperature. The so called core-shell particles of PMMA brush shell grafted from the core surface of colloidal silica particles were characterised by FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Acoustosizer. The size and size distribution of the particles were also determined by Mastersizer. The results of FTIR and TGA measurements showed that SiO2 was successfully coated by PMMA with the chain length of 87 nm.
