Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, the Influences on International Trades of Transgenic Agricultural Products and Derelopment of Biotechnology

In order to transfer, handle and use living modified organisms (LMO) safely to protect human health and biological diversity, the parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity negotiated for five years, and finalized the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety through arduous effort in early 2000, which became the first international law on LMO. The protocol reaffirmed the precautionary principle, that permits contracting parties to prohibit or limit the entry of LMO, and the shipments containing LMO are to be clearly labeled. This paper predicted the influence on international trades of transgenic agricultural products and modern biotechnology. Some proposals for China to deal with were raised accordingly.
