Abstract:The global patent information about metallurgical processing technologies for nickel laterite over the past twenty years has been sorted and analyzed in terms of the trend of patent application, the nationality of applicant, the principal applicant of patent, patent quality and technical development trend. The analysis results show that China ranks the first in terms of patent numbers, and Sumitomo Metal Mining Co Ltd predominates in terms of the principal applicant. In terms of patent quality and patent layout, Japan, Australia and Brazil all have built patent families with an improved layout. It is suggested that the Chinese enterprises should improve the patent layout with application for foreign patents and make more efforts on the technical research and development, especially applying for the patents on energy conservation, environmental protection for the metallurgical processing of nickel laterite. Since the nickel laterite is the principal source for nickel resources, the analysis of patents on nickel laterite can provide an important reference for determining China's strategy of nickel resources exploitation.
