Abstract:In this paper the laws of Ag~+ exchange and the relationships between exchange conditions and photochromic properties of photochromic glasses prepared by silver ion exchange are studied by SEM. EDS. and COL etc. The proper exchange technique and the methods of controlling photochromic layer thickness as well as the ways to obtain thicker photochromic layer are discussed. The results show that proper thickness of photochromic layer and better photochromic properties can be obtained by controlling certain ion-exchange conditions and pre-heat treatments. The amount of silver in glass are dependent on ionexchange conditions. Heat treatments at lower temperatures prior to higher temperatures uniformise the silver concentration and improve photochromic properties.
