Objectives

We examined the association between three inflammatory markers (Interleukin (IL)-6, C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α) and incident lung cancer using baseline, updated, and averaged inflammatory measures in older adults.

Methods

We fitted multivariable Cox models to assess whether circulating levels of inflammation markers were associated with incident lung cancers in the Health Aging, Body and Composition (HealthABC) prospective cohort of 3075 older adults aged 70–79?years at baseline. IL-6 and CRP were measured biennially, whereas TNF-α was measured at baseline.

Results

Baseline levels of IL-6 were significantly associated with incident lung cancer risk in a model that adjusted for age, gender, race, and site (Model 1) (Hazard RatioT3 vs. T1: 3.34, 95% Confidence Interval: 1.91, 5.85) and in a model adjusted for health factors linked to chronic inflammation (Model 2) (HR T3 vs. T1: 2.57, 95% CI: 1.41, 4.65). The associations observed in time-updated IL-6 (HR T3 vs. T1: 2.47, 95% CI: 1.43, 4.28), cumulatively averaged IL-6 (HR T3 vs. T1: 2.47, 95% CI: 1.43, 4.35), and baseline CRP levels (HR T3 vs. T1: 1.85, 95% CI: 1.11, 3.08) with incident lung cancer in Model 1 were not statistically significant in Model 2.

Conclusions

Baseline CRP and IL-6 levels were associated with increased risk of lung cancer in Model 1 and both models, respectively. Chronic IL-6 inflammation, as quantified by repeated measures was associated with incident lung cancer in Model 1, but not Model 2. Further research is needed to understand the role of CRP and IL-6 in lung carcinogenesis.  相似文献

The Seychelles Child Development Study is a longitudinal cohort study following a group of 779 children exposed prenatally to methyl mercury (MeHg) through a maternal diet high in fish. The cohort has been examined six times beginning in infancy with no consistent evidence of adverse effects. In fact, their performance resembles what would be expected from normal children of comparable ages growing up in western cultures. During a neurodevelopment assessment at 66 months, the children were tested for scholastic achievement using the Woodcock Johnson Tests of Achievement. Their reading scores were depressed relative to US norms while arithmetic scores were within normal limits. This disparity was not evident at 107 months; in fact, reading achievement scores far exceeded expected performance relative to US norms, with over 75% of the cohort obtaining scores at or above the 90th percentile. This study reports a secondary analysis of the scholastic achievement data to test the hypothesis that the results obtained in the primary analysis were probably due to the onset of the primary school curriculum between the first and second testing, and not to inherent cognitive deficits among the children at 66 months. The results suggest that a combination of reading instruction and characteristically consistent letter-sound relationships in Creole, the language spoken at home by the majority of Seychellois families, probably accounted for the high achievement scores at 107 months.  相似文献

We offer an appraisal of Professor Shuttleworth-Edwards’s commentary (2016) on the extraordinary challenges of assessment of cognitive function in a culturally, educationally, racially, and linguistically diverse population. First, we discuss the purpose of using intelligence tests in South Africa and beyond in order to clarify the reference group on which norms will be based. Next, we discuss the psychometric consequences of Pearson’s decisions to not adapt their measure of intellectual functioning to the cultural background of the majority of South Africans, and to use a population-matched normative sample in which the disadvantaged group is in the majority. We echo Professor Shuttleworth-Edwards’s call for large-scale empirical studies of cognitive test performance in a multicultural context. We conclude the article by urging the entire community of neuropsychologists to hold test companies accountable to strict, ethical, and comprehensive standards for production of accurate and appropriate measurement of cognitive function.  相似文献

Understanding the relationship between cerebral laterality and intelligence is important in elucidating the neurological underpinnings of individual differences in cognitive abilities. A widely used, behavioral indicator for cerebral laterality, mainly of language, is handedness. A number of studies have compared cognitive abilities between groups of left- and right-handers, while others have investigated the handedness prevalence between groups of different cognitive abilities. The present study comprises five meta-analyses of studies that have assessed the handedness prevalence in (a) individuals with intellectual disability (ID) of unknown/idiopathic nature compared to typically developing (TD) individuals, and (b) individuals with intellectual giftedness (IG) compared to TD individuals. Nineteen data sets totaling 16,076 participants (5795 ID, 8312 TD, and 1969 IG) were included in the analyses. Elevated levels of atypical handedness were found to be robust only for the ID to TD comparison. Findings constrain the range of acceptable theories on the handedness distribution for different intelligence levels.  相似文献

The main objective of this study was to analyze in a sample of children with ASD the relationship between sensory processing, social participation and praxis impairments and some of the child's characteristics, such as non-verbal IQ, severity of ASD symptoms and the number of ADHD symptoms (inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity), both in the home and main-classroom environments. Participants were the parents and teachers of 41 children with ASD from 5 to 8 years old (M = 6.09). They completed the Sensory Processing Measure (SPM) to evaluate sensory processing, social participation and praxis; the Gilliam Autism Rating Scale (GARS-2) to evaluate autism severity; and a set of items (the DSM-IV-TR criteria) to evaluate the number of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms in the child. Non-verbal IQ – measured by the Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices Test – did not show a relationship with any of the SPM variables. The SPM variables were significant predictors of autism severity and had similar weights in the two environments. In the case of ADHD symptoms, the SPM variables had a greater weight in the home than in the classroom environment, and they were significant predictors of both inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity – especially inattention – only in the family context. The moderate association between inattention and auditory processing found in the main-classroom suggests the possible utility of certain measures aimed to simplify any classroom's acoustic environment.  相似文献

We estimate potential risks to human health in the UK from dietary exposure to lead from wild gamebirds killed by shooting. The main source of exposure to lead in Europe is now dietary. We used data on lead concentrations in UK gamebirds, from which gunshot had been removed following cooking to simulate human exposure to lead. We used UK food consumption and lead concentration data to evaluate the number of gamebird meals consumed weekly that would be expected, based upon published studies, to result in changes, over and above those resulting from exposure to lead in the base diet, in intelligence quotient (IQ), Systolic Blood Pressure and chronic kidney disease (CKD) considered in a recent opinion of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to be significant at a population level and also in SAT test scores and in rates of spontaneous abortion. We found the consumption of <1 meal of game a week may be associated with a one point reduction in IQ in children and 1.2–6.5 gamebird meals per week may be associated with the other effects. These results should help to inform the development of appropriate responses to the risks from ingesting lead from ammunition in game in the UK and European Union (EU).  相似文献

Abstract

Organizational inefficiency and inattention are speculated to be the reason for executive deficit (ED) of ADHD probands. Even with average IQ, probands often perform poorly due to higher inattention. Pharmacotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, and counselling provide only symptomatic relief. Several candidate genes showed involvement with ADHD; the most consistent are dopamine receptor 4 (DRD4) and solute carrier family 6 member 3 (SLC6A3). We analyzed association of rarely investigated DRD4 and SLC6A3 variants with ADHD core traits in Indo-Caucasoid probands. ED, inattention, organizational efficiency, and IQ were measured by Barkley Deficit in Executive Functioning-Child & Adolescent scale, DSM-IV-TR, Conners’ Parent Rating Scale-revised, and WISC respectively. Target sites were analyzed by PCR, RFLP, and/or Sanger sequencing of genomic DNA. DRD4 variants mostly affected inattention while SLC6A3 variants showed association with IQ. Few DRD4 and SLC6A3 variants showed dichotomous association with IQ and inattention. DRD4 Exon3 VNTR >4R showed negative impact on all traits excepting IQ. Inattention showed correlation with attention span, organizational efficiency, and ED, while IQ failed to do so. We infer that IQ and attention could be differentially regulated by dopaminergic gene variants affecting functional efficiency in ADHD and the two traits should be considered together for providing better rehabilitation.  相似文献
