Positive species interactions such as facilitation are important for enabling species to persist, especially in stressful conditions, and the nature and strength of facilitation varies along physical and biological gradients. Expansion of coastal infrastructure is creating hotspots of invasive species which can spillover into natural habitats, but the role of positive species interactions associated with biological invasions remains understudied. Theory suggests that stronger biotic pressure in natural habitats inhibits invasion success. In space-limited marine systems, sessile organisms can overcome this limiting resource by settling as an epibiont on a substrate organism – basibiont. Using a series of spatially extensive surveys, we explored the role of invasive and native basibionts in providing habitat for other invasive and native epibionts, and tested whether environmental context (i.e. if the receiving habitat was natural or artificial), altered ecological outcomes. Overall, provision of space by basibionts was more important for invasive epibionts than for native epibionts but was dependent on the environmental context. Invasive basibionts facilitated invasive epibionts in natural habitats, and appeared to be more important for native epibionts in artificial habitats respectively. Native basibionts facilitated invasive, but not native epibionts in both natural and artificial habitats. These results advance our understanding of facilitation and highlight the idiosyncratic nature of biofouling and epibiosis, and the potentially important influence of environmental context. The degree to which native habitat-forming species versus invasive habitat-forming species either do or do not facilitate other native or non-native species is a rich area for investigation. Experimental work is required to disentangle the processes underpinning these patterns.  相似文献

Canopy-forming algae have been shown to play a fundamental role in the maintenance of understorey assemblages on rocky shores. In the Mediterranean, low-shore habitats are often monopolised by canopy algae of the genus Cystoseira and, in particular, by the species Cystoseira amentacea var. stricta. Alternatively, low-shore habitats are dominated by turf-forming algae and/or mussels. Previous studies showed that loss of Cystoseira, by natural or anthropogenic disturbances, resulted in the increase of turfing algae. Here, we propose that turf-forming algae may act as colonisers from nearby habitats, specifically from lower portions of the shore. The following hypotheses were tested to investigate this proposition: (1) in presence of Cystoseira, the assemblage living under its canopy will be distinct, in terms of composition and structure, from that found lower on the shore, (2) if the canopy of Cystoseira was removed, the differences between the two assemblages would decrease or disappear, (3) the effects of the canopy would be more important than other causes of variability at the spatial scale investigated (hundreds to thousands of metres), and (4) that effects of removal of the canopy would be consistent through time. These hypotheses were tested by means of a canopy removal experiment, involving several spatial and temporal repetitions of the manipulation.The assemblage underneath the canopy of Cystoseira was distinct from that found immediately lower on the shore, but when the canopy was removed there were no differences between the two. The effects of the canopy were consistent at the spatial and temporal scales investigated. Several species living under the canopy disappeared and were replaced by turf-forming species, resulting in a homogenisation of the two habitats and in a drastic loss of habitat diversity. This study shows that Cystoseira can be considered a habitat-forming species, responsible for the maintenance of two distinct low-shore assemblages. In this light, its importance should be taken into account by policies aiming to preserve biodiversity on rocky shores.  相似文献

Although diversity–stability relationships have been extensively studied in local ecosystems, the global biodiversity crisis calls for an improved understanding of these relationships in a spatial context. Here, we use a dynamical model of competitive metacommunities to study the relationships between species diversity and ecosystem variability across scales. We derive analytic relationships under a limiting case; these results are extended to more general cases with numerical simulations. Our model shows that, while alpha diversity decreases local ecosystem variability, beta diversity generally contributes to increasing spatial asynchrony among local ecosystems. Consequently, both alpha and beta diversity provide stabilising effects for regional ecosystems, through local and spatial insurance effects respectively. We further show that at the regional scale, the stabilising effect of biodiversity increases as spatial environmental correlation increases. Our findings have important implications for understanding the interactive effects of global environmental changes (e.g. environmental homogenisation) and biodiversity loss on ecosystem sustainability at large scales.  相似文献

The study investigated carbonyl group formation along the chain and the chain cleavage of cereal β-glucan during heat treatments, high pressure homogenisation, cold storage and ascorbic acid treatment of aqueous solutions of this soluble dietary fibre. The carbonyl group content and its distribution along the chain were simultaneously determined with the chain cleavage using a HPSEC/labelling method, originally developed for water-insoluble cellulose. Ascorbic acid treatment resulted in a relatively high degree of carbonyl content and extensive degradation of β-glucan, even in concentrations typically found in foods. The thermal oxidation of the β-glucan was considerable at 120 °C in a β-glucan solution with co-extracted compounds from oat ingredient, and in the highly purified solutions in presence of ferrous ions. Oxidation also probably contributed to the molecular properties during high pressure homogenisation, even thou the main degradation mechanism is the hydrolysis caused by mechanical energy. In addition to the cleavage of the β-glucan chain, the formation of compact, high molar mass species or molecule clusters were obtained in the study after ascorbic acid, heat (120 °C) and homogenisation treatments.  相似文献

A major challenge in ecology, conservation and global‐change biology is to understand why biodiversity responds differently to similar environmental changes. Contingent biodiversity responses may depend on how disturbance and dispersal interact to alter variation in community composition (β‐diversity) and assembly mechanisms. However, quantitative syntheses of these patterns and processes across studies are lacking. Using null‐models and meta‐analyses of 22 factorial experiments in herbaceous plant communities across Europe and North America, we show that disturbance diversifies communities when dispersal is limited, but homogenises communities when combined with increased immigration from the species pool. In contrast to the hypothesis that disturbance and dispersal mediate the strength of niche assembly, both processes altered β‐diversity through neutral‐sampling effects on numbers of individuals and species in communities. Our synthesis suggests that stochastic effects of disturbance and dispersal on community assembly play an important, but underappreciated, role in mediating biotic homogenisation and biodiversity responses to environmental change.  相似文献

Literature devoted to experimental measurements of the elastic properties of the human cortical bone gives us a relatively wide spectrum of values. This proves that the result depends on the bone itself and on the area from where the sample has been taken. Ultrasonic measurement, which is a fine technology, points out complex maps. The reason of this very strong heterogeneity is not completely explained. The present study is based on a numerical model of the human cortical bone, the SiNuPrOs model and aims to suggest an explanation. If one admits that mineral apposition occurs around collagen fibres, the spatial orientation of these fibres would have an important consequence on the elastic properties of the medium. On the basis of homogenisation theory allowing to compute all the components of the elasticity tensor, this study quantifies the main influence of this architectural orientation and its effect on the anisotropy of the cortical bone.  相似文献

1. Blooms of the benthic, stalked diatom Didymosphenia geminata were first observed in New Zealand in 2004. Since then, D. geminata has spread to numerous catchments in the South Island and is also spreading in its native range. The species is a rare example of an invasive alga in lotic systems.
2. Ecosystem effects may be expected as D. geminata attains unusually high biomass in rivers. We examined data from three independent studies in three South Island, New Zealand, rivers for evidence of effects on periphyton biomass and benthic invertebrate communities.
3. The combined results confirmed that the presence of D. geminata was associated with greatly increased periphyton biomass and, in most cases, increased invertebrate densities. We also recorded shifts in community composition, dominated by increased densities of Oligochaeta. Chironomidae, Cladocera and Nematoda also generally increased in density with D. geminata . Significant increases or declines in other invertebrate taxa were inconsistent among rivers.
4. In all three studies, increased spatial invertebrate community homogeneity was associated with high D. geminata biomass at the within-river scale. However, no declines in taxon richness or diversity were detected.
5. Although ecosystem effects of D. geminata on existing periphyton biomass and invertebrate communities are measurable, no inferences can be made from the present data about effects on higher trophic levels (fish).  相似文献

Cultural homogenization has accompanied many of the most destructive processes of mass displacement during the Twentieth century. Its goal has been to make polity and citizens ethnically and culturally ‘congruent’. This article questions the explanatory power of traditional accounts linking cultural homogenization with industrialization during state-building processes and the emergence of nationalism. It suggests that further attention must be paid to the role of the military as an essential institution in both of these processes. Finally, the ‘egalitarian’ rhetoric and legitimizing rationale underpinning both militarization and cultural homogenization is assessed as a most powerful nationalist tool for imposing new hierarchical structures.  相似文献
