Summary A stream-breeding race of small-mouthed salamanders (Ambystoma texanum) in central Kentucky produces ova that are twice as large as those of a pond-breeding race found nearby. Embryos of stream-breeders also hatch at a more advanced developmental stage than those of pond-breeders. Morphological evidence indicates that stream-breeders were derived from pond-breeding stock. Assuming that differences between stream and pond-breeders reflect evolutionary change, and that the ancestral pond stock that invaded streams was similar to extant pond-breeders, we examined three hypotheses that might explain changes in ovum size and stage at hatching following the invasion of streams. (1) Larger ovum size evolved indirectly as a consequence of selection for rapid development which minimizes mortality risk from stream drying. (2) Increased ovum (hatchling) size and stage at hatching of stream-breeders are adaptations to resist stream current. (3) Increased ovum (hatchling) size and stage at hatching are adaptations to reduce predation on hatchlings from stream invertebrates. The results of field and laboratory studies only support hypotheses (2) and (3). Hatchlings that were relatively large or at a more advanced developmental stage had slower drift rates and were less vulnerable to predation by Phagocata gracilis, a flatworm abundant in streams in central Kentucky. Developmental and growth parameters were not correlated significantly with ovum size in populations of either geographic race. Differences in degree of parental care among races also cannot explain variation in ovum size since both races abandon their eggs immediately after oviposition.  相似文献

This scanning-electron microscopic study demonstrates the convergent evolution of the mouthparts of various herbivorous stream animals (insects from different orders, an isopod, snails, fish, and a tadpole) feeding on epilithic algal pastures. This food source is rich but is often difficult to harvest. Nevertheless, a large number of species can live on it because they have evolved highly specialized mouthparts. There are four functional problems that an algae grazer has to solve: the algae must be removed from the stone, they have to be collected and crushed, and a current shield is needed to prevent the water flow sweeping away the food. Among the 30 algae grazers examined in this study, a limited number of morphological solutions have been found for each of these adaptational problems. There are multiple evolutionary pathways for mouthpart adaptation and even closely related species have often evolved different types of tools for the same function. This refects the existence of a certain amount of evolutionary scope. Such freedom of evolution is present, however, only at the beginning of the adaptiogenesis of an algae grazer. Once one of the evolutionary pathways is taken, further improvement of the mouthparts is possible only by the refinement of the ‘chosen’ type of tools. The consequence of this is that a large number of astonishing convergences have occurred in algae grazers that have independently trodden the same evolutionary pathway.  相似文献

Synopsis Campostoma spp., widespread and abundant herbivorous minnows of eastern North America, produce distinctive grazing scars when feeding on algae attached to natural substrates in streams. These scars are particularly prominent upon the low growth forms of blue-green algae that dominate the attached algal flora of many upland streams. In one stream pool in the Ozark uplands of Oklahoma, numbers and sizes of grazing scars coincided with numbers and sizes of individual Campostoma that occurred across a depth gradient, demonstrating that the information contained in the scars can provide quantification of microhabitat use and grazing intensity of these important herbivores. The results also support the hypothesis that in environments free of aquatic predators, larger fish use deeper parts of available stream habitats, particularly if threats from terrestrial or avian predators exist.  相似文献

Epilithic bacterial and algal biomass were compared among a run, riffle, and pool along an open-canopy section of a third-order, temperate stream. Epilithic biofilms were sampled after 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 days colonization on unglazed ceramic tiles that were attached to plastic trays (n = 3) placed across each of the three habitats (i.e., run, riffle, pool). The diverse habitats and sampling regime were selected to provide a range in algal biomass so that potential covariation between epilithic bacterial and algal biomass could be assessed. There were significant differences among habitats and among trays within each habitat for both chlorophyll a and AFDM. Chlorophyll a and AFDM increased in the run and pool throughout the colonization period. In the riffle, chlorophyll a and AFDM increased rapidly early in colonization, then decreased. Epilithic bacterial biomass increased rapidly with no significant differences among the three habitats throughout colonization. Further, bacterial biomass did not correlate with either chlorophyll a or AFDM in any of the three habitats or on any of the sampling days. These results suggest that epilithic algal and bacterial biomass may be regulated by independent controls in some stream environments.  相似文献

Synopsis The numbers of trout,Salmo trutta, in Granslev », Denmark, were estimated by the removal method on 18 dates from March 1974 to March 1976. Populations density varied from 0.39 to 0.74 trout m–2 in 1974–1975 and from 0.36 to 0.59 m–2 in 1975–1976 and at all times four or five year classes were present. The age structure of the population was unstable and the variable natural survival, immigration into and emigration from the study site could not be separated. An annual growth cycle with the most rapid growth for all year classes taking place from May to early August was found. Statistically significant differences between different years occurred in the growth of the 0,I and II age groups, but no evidence of density-dependent growth was found. The biomass ranged from 35.4 to 9.5 g m–2. The total mean annual biomass was 22.8 and 14.7 g m–2 in the two years and the II group made the greatest contribution, 44 and 48%, respectively. During 1975–1976 the mean annual biomass of each year class only was about two-thirds of that in 1974–1975. Annual production in the two years was 25.7 (range 24.7–28.5) and 12.6 g m–2 (range 11.7–15.0) and the II group accounted for about 46 and 38% of the production. In addition eel,Anguilla anguilla, produced about 0.5 g m–2 yr–2. The unstable age structure of the trout population was compared with trout populations from other streams. The importance of immigration as a recruitment process in middle and lower reaches of streams and of migrations as a mechanism to optimise utilization of the total stream habitat, as well as temperature as a factor controlling the growth rate are discussed.  相似文献

The blood of two fresh water cobitids — Botia lohachata, an exclusive water breathing form and Lepidocephalus guntea a dual breather, — showed a comparatively higher range of Hb (16.0–19.0 g%), Hct (50.0–61.1%) and number of RBC (2.71–6.7 millions/mm3) than many other water and air breathing fishes. Significant sexual difference exists in these characteristics (P > 0.05).The impact of life in oxygen depleted water, also inhabited by L. guntea as a result of its air breathing habit, is well reflected in its greater RBC size (11.86 × 8.66 µm) and their larger surface area (83.96 µm2) compared to that of Botia (53.16 µm2). The smaller size (9.92 × 6.45 µm) and consequently greater number of erythrocytes (4.67 millions/mm3) in Botia, are related to its active mode of life in the swiftly flowing water of hilly rivers. Though the higher nucleo-cytoplasmic ratio of 1 : 5.2 in Botia and 1 : 6.9 in Lepidocephalus suggest a slower red cell metabolism, the greater number of erythrocytes seems to have compensated for their active mode of life.  相似文献

Global climate change is apparent within the Arctic and the south‐western deserts of North America, with record drought in the latter reflected within 640 000 km2 of the Colorado River Basin. To discern the manner by which natural and anthropogenic drivers have compressed Basin‐wide fish biodiversity, and to establish a baseline for future climate effects, the Stream Hierarchy Model (SHM) was employed to juxtapose fluvial topography against molecular diversities of 1092 Bluehead Sucker (Catostomus discobolus). MtDNA revealed three geomorphically defined evolutionarily significant units (ESUs): Bonneville Basin, upper Little Colorado River and the remaining Colorado River Basin. Microsatellite analyses (16 loci) reinforced distinctiveness of the Bonneville Basin and upper Little Colorado River, but subdivided the Colorado River Basin into seven management units (MUs). One represents a cline of three admixed gene pools comprising the mainstem and its lower‐gradient tributaries. Six others are not only distinct genetically but also demographically (i.e. migrants/generation <9.7%). Two of these (i.e. Grand Canyon and Canyon de Chelly) are defined by geomorphology, two others (i.e. Fremont‐Muddy and San Raphael rivers) are isolated by sharp declivities as they drop precipitously from the west slope into the mainstem Colorado/Green rivers, another represents an isolated impoundment (i.e. Ringdahl Reservoir), while the last corresponds to a recognized subspecies (i.e. Zuni River, NM). Historical legacies of endemic fishes (ESUs) and their evolutionary potential (MUs) are clearly represented in our data, yet their arbiter will be the unrelenting natural and anthropogenic water depletions that will precipitate yet another conservation conflict within this unique but arid region.  相似文献
