Enterotoxaemia is a disease with a high associated mortality rate, affecting beef and veal calves worldwide, caused by C. perfringens alpha toxin and perfringolysin. A longitudinal study was conducted to determine the dynamics of antibodies against these toxins in 528 calves on 4 beef and 15 veal farms. The second study aimed to determine the effect of solid feed intake on the production of antibodies against alpha toxin and perfringolysin. The control group only received milk replacer, whereas in the test group solid feed was provided. Maternal antibodies for alpha toxin were present in 45% of the veal calves and 66% of the beef calves. In beef calves a fluent transition from maternal to active immunity was observed for alpha toxin, whereas almost no veal calves developed active immunity. Perfringolysin antibodies significantly declined both in veal and beef calves. In the second study all calves were seropositive for alpha toxin throughout the experiment and solid feed intake did not alter the dynamics of alpha and perfringolysin antibodies. In conclusion, the present study showed that veal calves on a traditional milk replacer diet had significantly lower alpha toxin antibodies compared to beef calves in the risk period for enterotoxaemia, whereas no differences were noticed for perfringolysin. 相似文献
Treatment fidelity and proficiency of a nurse-led motivational interviewing (MI)-based pre-treatment and control condition was evaluated. A random sample was scored by means of the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) scale, and a second rater was in charge. MI fidelity was satisfactory for three out of five ratings. Most mean ratings were higher in the MI-based intervention, but differences were not statistically significant. The threshold for beginning MI proficiency was only exceeded for one score and one additional measure. In general, higher levels of fidelity in the intervention condition confirmed that MI was partially applied there. Although the quality of MI delivery as well as mixed inter-rater reliabilities of the fidelity scores leaves room for improvement, robust findings between the two raters were found. These results suggest the need for rigor selection of MI counselors on beforehand, and continuous supervision. Furthermore, fidelity check in studies using MI is needed. 相似文献
The in vitro activity of drugs currently used in the treatment of diarrhea against 595 enteropathogens from worldwide sources was compared with that of six newly developed antibiotics, ciprofloxacin; norfloxacin; ofloxacin; aztreonam; HR810, an expanded-spectrum cephalosporin; and RU28965, a new macrolide. In contrast with ampicillin and chloramphenicol, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole showed an excellent activity against all of the enteropathogens tested, except Campylobacter species. Ciprofloxacin had the highest activity, with an overall 90% MIC of less than or equal to 0.097 micrograms/ml, except for Campylobacter species (0.39 micrograms/ml). Unlike other cephalosporins, HR810 showed a satisfactory activity against Campylobacter species (90% MIC of 3.12 micrograms/ml). RU28965 was three times less active than erythromycin against Campylobacter species. 相似文献
In this case, a male patient presented with a clinically and radiographieally unstable slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) as well as slipped calcaneal epiphysis years. Subsequent thorough at the age of 23 work-up revealed that he had some features of rickets and labo- ratory test demonstrated he had hypophos- phatemia (2.3mg/dl), normocalcemia, normal vi- tamin D metabolite levels, and secondary hy- perparathyroidism. 相似文献
When a sequence variation is found in a candidate gene for a disease, it is important to establish whether this change is neutral or responsible for the observed disorders in a patient. To answer this question, in the absence of further experimental investigations, several simulation programs have been proposed to predict whether a nonsynonymous single-nucleotide polymorphism is likely to have or not have a deleterious effect on the phenotype. In this work, we tested two such programs, PolyPhen and SIFT, using two kinds of targets. The first ones concerned the products of the hemoglobin and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase genes, which are abundantly documented. The second concerned two systems for which much less information is available: (a) the TNFRSF1A gene, implicated in tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated periodic syndrome, and (b) the MEFV gene, which is believed to be involved in familial Mediterranean fever. Our data suggest that, from a practical point of view, these programs should not be used to decide, in the absence of other tests or arguments, whether the sequence variation found in a patient is or is not responsible for the disease. The consequence of an erroneous prediction may be disastrous in the perspective of genetic counseling. 相似文献
BACKGROUND: Data on outpatient penicillin use in Europe were collected from 25 countries within the ESAC project, funded by DG SANCO of the European Commission, using the WHO ATC/DDD methodology. METHODS: For the period 1997-2003, data on outpatient use of systemic penicillins aggregated at the level of the active substance were collected and expressed in DDD (WHO, version 2004) per 1000 inhabitants per day (DID). Of the 'Penicillins' (J01C), outpatient use of narrow-spectrum penicillins (J01CE), broad-spectrum penicillins (J01CA), penicillinase-resistant penicillins (J01CF) and combinations with beta-lactamase inhibitors (J01CR) in 25 European countries was analysed in detail. RESULTS: Total outpatient penicillin use in 2003 varied by a factor of 4 between the country with the highest (15.27 DID in Slovakia) and lowest use (3.86 DID in the Netherlands). Narrow-spectrum penicillins, broad-spectrum penicillins and combinations with beta-lactamase inhibitors were used most in 4, 12 and 9 countries, respectively. Penicillin use increased by more than 1 DID in nine countries, whereas it decreased by more than 1 DID in two countries (Czech Republic, France). An increase of the use of combinations with beta-lactamase inhibitors by more than 10% in 10 countries coincided with an equal decrease of broad-spectrum penicillins in seven countries and narrow-spectrum penicillins in three countries. CONCLUSION: Penicillins represent the most widely used antibiotic class in all 25 participating countries; albeit with considerable variation of their use patterns. A distinct shift from narrow-spectrum penicillins to broad-spectrum penicillins, and specifically their combinations with beta-lactamase inhibitors, was observed during the period 1997-2003. 相似文献
Purpose: To assess the factor structure, related constructs and internal consistency of the Child Activity Limitation Interview 21-Child version for use in Dutch-language countries.
Methods: Cross-sectional validation study: After forward and back translation of the Dutch version of the Child Activity Limitation Interview 21-Child adolescents (11–21 years old) with chronic musculoskeletal pain completed an assessment. The assessment contained the Dutch Child Activity Limitation Interview, and questionnaires about demographics, pain intensity, functional disability, anxiety and depression. Internal consistency and construct validity were evaluated through exploratory factor analysis (principal axis factoring with oblique rotation) and hypotheses testing using pain intensity, activity limitations, anxiety and depression as comparative constructs.
Results: Seventy-four adolescents completed the assessment. Exploratory factor analysis resulted in a two-factor structure, explaining 50% of the variance. Internal consistency was good (Cronbach’s α?=?0.91 total scale, α?=?0.90 Factor 1, α?=?0.80 Factor 2). All nine hypotheses were confirmed.
Conclusion: The Dutch version can be used to assess pain-related disability in Dutch-speaking adolescents comparable to the study sample. Scores on both subscales provide insight into the severity of the pain-related disability in both daily routine and more physically vigorous activities.
Implications for Rehabilitation
Chronic pain is a disabling disorder which not only impacts physically but restricts quality of life.
This study provides clinicians a questionnaire to measure pain-related disability and quantify the impact of pain on the daily living of adolescents.
The advantage of the Dutch version of the Child Activity and Limitations Interview over other measurements is that it can distinguish limitations in daily activities from more physically vigorous activities.
