Background

Herbal medicine has been widely utilized by pregnant women despite the limited available evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of that practice. The current available studies, from different countries, estimated that the use of herbal medicine during pregnancy range from 7% up to 96%. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence, attitude, source of information, and reasoning behind the use of herbal medicine among pregnant women in Saudia Arabia.

Methods

A cross-sectional study conducted using a convenience sample including pregnant women who visited the obstetric clinics at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A survey was administered in order to evaluate the prevalence and perception toward herbal medicine use among pregnant women in Saudi Arabia.

Results

A total of 297 pregnant women completed the survey. The results showed that 56% of the respondents have used some type of herbal medicine during their pregnancy. Olive oil was utilized in 26% of the respondents followed by cumin 20% and garlic 15%. In addition, 37% of the respondents used herbal medicine by their own initiative, while 33% and 12% used herbal medicine based on recommendations from their families and friends, respectively. Furthermore, 19% of the respondents reported a positive attitude toward herbal medicine use during pregnancy. In addition, the percentage of women with positive attitude was marginally higher among respondents with lower educational level.

Conclusion

The prevalence of using herbal medicine is considerably high among pregnant women in Saudi Arabia. Unfortunately, the majority of the users relied on informal sources to use herbal medicine during pregnancy.  相似文献

Purpose

To translate and cross-culturally adapt the Skindex-16, a brief skin-disease-specific QoL questionnaire, into Arabic for Egyptians and to evaluate its measurement properties in Egyptian patients with skin disease.

Method

Translation and cultural adaption were performed following guidelines for cross-cultural adaption of health-related quality of life measures. Subsequently, Skindex-16 was administered to 500 consecutive dermatological patients and 500 healthy persons for verification of its reliability and validity. Next, we examined the effect of skin disorders on QoL as well as influences of age, sex, socioeconomic level, education, and use of medication on skin disease-related QoL.

Results

The instrument showed high internal consistency reliability and good construct and content validity. The quality of life was most deteriorated in the emotional domain followed by symptoms domain (mean percentage score 55.5 ± 23.1 and 31.7 ± 26.8 respectively), while functioning was the least affected domain (mean percentage score 29.1 ± 26.8). Higher total Skindex-16 scores were observed for patients with psoriasis, urticaria, acne, and atopic dermatitis than those with vitiligo and alopecia areata. Educational level, social class, medication use, and family history influenced the impact of skin disease on overall QoL.

Conclusion

The adapted Egyptian Arabic version of Skindex-16 is valid and reliable; it showed that skin problems had a clinically significant impact on QoL in Egyptian patients.

This work investigated transdermal penetration of a model lipophilic drug (estradiol) through human epidermis from phosphatidylcholine (PC)-based liposomes and saturated aqueous estradiol solution (control). Representative examples of cholate-containing ultradeformable (Transfersomes), non-rigid (pure PC) and membrane-stabilized (cholesterol-containing) vesicles were used. The unilamellar vesicles' diameters and zeta potentials were determined. Transdermal penetration studies involved occluded passive penetration for 12 h and cathodic iontophoresis (0.8 mA/cm(2)) for 8 h for all systems. Combined electroporation (5 pulses, 100 V, 100 ms, 1 min spacing) and iontophoresis (0.8 mA/cm(2), for 2 h) was also employed for ultradeformable vesicles and control. Estradiol penetration parameters (flux and skin deposition) from different formulations were compared. All vesicles had essentially the same particle size, with ultradeformable liposomes showing the highest negative zeta potential (-29 mV). Occluded passive penetration improved estradiol skin penetration from liposomes relative to control. Iontophoretic studies revealed the superiority of ultradeformable vesicles regarding drug skin penetration and deposition compared to traditional liposomes. Combination of electroporation and iontophoresis did not markedly improve estradiol penetration for ultradeformable vesicles. The combination results implied repair of the skin barrier due to the penetration retarding effect of PC monomers released from liposomes.  相似文献

This work investigated the effect of electroporation on human epidermal penetration of a model neutral lipophilic compound (estradiol) from saturated aqueous solution and when encapsulated in ultradeformable liposomes. Total amount penetrated and skin deposition were compared with values obtained from passive diffusion. The effect of electrical pulsing on liposome size was investigated. The action of phosphatidylcholine on skin that was structurally altered by such pulses was determined. Electroporation did not affect liposome size. Skin pulsing considerably increased estradiol penetration and skin deposition from solution, relative to passive delivery, with subsequent partial recovery of skin resistance to molecular penetration. Surprisingly, with liposomes, electroporation did not markedly affect estradiol skin penetration. Importantly, liposomal phosphatidylcholine applied during or after pulsing accelerated skin barrier repair, i.e. provided an anti-enhancer or retardant effect.  相似文献

Hesperidin, a flavanoglycone abundantly present in citrus fruits, is reported to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties. Previous reports from our laboratory indicated the neuroprotective effect of hesperidin against aluminum chloride (AlCl3)-induced memory loss, acetylcholine esterase hyperactivity, oxidative stress, and enhanced expression of amyloid β protein biosynthesis-related markers. However, their role on AlCl3-induced inflammation, caspase activation, Tau pathology, altered Akt/GSK 3β signaling pathway, and Aβ clearance marker has not yet been fully elucidated. Intraperitonial injection of AlCl3 (100 mg/kg body weight) for 60 days significantly elevated the expressions of insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE), cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK 5), and phosphoTau (pTau); inflammatory markers such as glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba-1), NF-kB, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-4, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS); and apoptotic markers including cytosolic cytochrome c (cyto c), caspase-3, caspase-8, and caspase-9, and lowered expressions of mitochondrial cyto c, phospho-Akt (pAkt) and phospho-glycogen synthase kinase-3β (pGSK-3β) in the hippocampus and cortex. Co-administration of hesperidin to AlCl3 rats for 60 days significantly ameliorated the aluminum-induced pathological changes. The behavioral studies also supported the above findings. Our results imply that treatment with hesperidin might be a potent option for treating the symptoms of cognitive impairment in Alzheimer’s disease by targeting its most prominent hallmarks.  相似文献

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is one of the most prevalent developmental orthopedic diseases worldwide. DDH is a spectrum of anatomical abnormalities of the hip joint and is characterized by premature arthritis in later life. Sporadic cases have been reported more frequently; however, some studies have reported families segregating DDH. Studies have suggested that the genetic factors play a significant role in the development of DDH. In order to detect genetic defect underlying DDH, we performed Sanger sequencing of all DDH associated genes, whole genome SNP genotyping and exome sequencing in a Saudi family with four individuals having DDH. Sanger sequencing of all known genes did not identify any pathogenic variant. Genotype data analysis using HomozygosityMapper identified shared homozygous regions on chromosome 15q13.3 and chromosome 19p13.2 flanked by rs17228178‐rs1534200 and rs466123‐rs2112461, respectively. These data were also analyzed by cnvpartition software for identification of DDH associated copy number variations (CNV). A shared copy number gain of approximately 15 kb on chr6p21.32 (chr6:33 053 906–33 069 893) was discovered in all affected individuals. Partial gain of this region has also been found in unaffected sibling of this family. Exome data did not reveal any candidate sequence variant. Whole genome sequencing is required to identify deep intronic variants in the shared homozygous regions. Identification of genetic variants involved in pathogenesis of DDH may open up interesting perspectives into the function of the gene(s) in hip joint development.  相似文献

The fluidity of vesicular membrane affects vesicular transdermal drug delivery. Essential oils can be located in vesicular membrane imparting flexibility and influencing transdermal delivery. Accordingly, the objective was to investigate the effect of incorporation of essential oils in niosomes on felodipine transdermal delivery. Rigid niosomes comprising Span 60 with cholesterol (2:1, w/w) were used with clove, eucalyptus or lemon oils being incorporated in the vesicles at increasing concentrations. The vesicle size and shape was monitored using scanning electron microscopy. Thermal analysis was used to monitor the thermal behavior. Drug entrapment efficiency, release and skin permeation were monitored. Niosomes were spherical with size ranging from 279 to 345?nm. The drug entrapment ranged from 97.9 to 98.8%. Thermal analysis confirmed the existence of oils within vesicular membrane and highlighted the membrane fluidizing effect. Drug release depended on the oil with clove oil or eucalyptus oil showing a trend of increased drug release compared with plain niosomes. In contrast, lemon oil reduced drug release rate. Skin permeation study reflected the superiority of oil containing niosomes. The results correlated with the fluidizing and penetration enhancing effects of oils. The study introduced essential oils as potential niosomes fluidizing agents for enhanced transdermal drug delivery.  相似文献
