Since the 1970s, various types of ceramic, glass and glass–ceramic materials have been proposed and used to replace damaged bone in many clinical applications. Among them, hydroxyapatite (HA) has been successfully employed thanks to its excellent biocompatibility. On the other hand, the bioactivity of HA and its reactivity with bone can be improved through the addition of proper amounts of bioactive glasses, thus obtaining HA-based composites. Unfortunately, high temperature treatments (1200 °C ÷ 1300 °C) are usually required in order to sinter these systems, causing the bioactive glass to crystallize into a glass–ceramic and hence inhibiting the bioactivity of the resulting composite. In the present study novel HA-based composites are realized and discussed. The samples can be sintered at a relatively low temperature (800 °C), thanks to the employment of a new glass (BG_Ca) with a reduced tendency to crystallize compared to the widely used 45S5 Bioglass®. The rich glassy phase, which can be preserved during the thermal treatment, has excellent effects in terms of in vitro bioactivity; moreover, compared to composites based on 45S5 Bioglass® having the same HA/glass proportions, the samples based on BG_Ca displayed an earlier response in terms of cell proliferation.  相似文献

Providing structural support while maintaining bioactivity is one of the most important goals for bioceramic scaffolds, i.e. artificial templates which guide cells to grow in a 3D pattern, facilitating the formation of functional tissues. In the last few years, 45S5 Bioglass® has been widely investigated as scaffolding material, mainly for its ability to bond to both hard and soft tissues. However, thermal treatments to improve the relatively poor mechanical properties of 45S5 Bioglass® turn it into a glass-ceramic, decreasing its bioactivity. Therefore, the investigation of new materials as candidates for scaffold applications is necessary. Here a novel glass composition, recently obtained by substituting the sodium oxide with potassium oxide in the 45S5 Bioglass® formulation, is employed in a feasibility study as scaffolding material. The new glass, named BioK, has the peculiarity to sinter at a relatively low temperature and shows a reduced tendency to crystallize. In this work, BioK has been employed to realize two types of scaffolds. The obtained samples have been fully characterized from a microstructural point of view and compared to each other. Additionally, their excellent bioactivity has been established by means of in vitro tests.  相似文献

Traditional kernel classifiers assume independence among the classification outputs. As a consequence, each misclassification receives the same weight in the loss function. Moreover, the kernel function only takes into account the similarity between input values and ignores possible relationships between the classes to be predicted. These assumptions are not consistent for most of real-life problems. In the particular case of remote sensing data, this is not a good assumption either. Segmentation of images acquired by airborne or satellite sensors is a very active field of research in which one tries to classify a pixel into a predefined set of classes of interest (e.g. water, grass, trees, etc.). In this situation, the classes share strong relationships, e.g. a tree is naturally (and spectrally) more similar to grass than to water. In this paper, we propose a first approach to remote sensing image classification using structured output learning. In our approach, the output space structure is encoded using a hierarchical tree, and these relations are added to the model in both the kernel and the loss function. The methodology gives rise to a set of new tools for structured classification, and generalizes the traditional non-structured classification methods. Comparison to standard SVM is done numerically, statistically and by visual inspection of the obtained classification maps. Good results are obtained in the challenging case of a multispectral image of very high spatial resolution acquired with QuickBird over a urban area.  相似文献

Nowadays bioactive glasses are diffused in medical practice due to their excellent bioactivity. However high temperature treatments, which are commonly required in several processing routes, may induce the glass to crystallize into a glass-ceramic, with possible negative effects on its bioactivity. In this work a new bioactive glass composition, inspired by the widely used Bioglass® 45 S5, was formulated by increasing the calcium content and substituting the sodium oxide with potassium oxide. The novel glass can be treated at a relatively low temperature (800 °C) and it is characterized by a reduced tendency to crystallize with excellent effects in terms of bioactivity, according to in vitro tests. Therefore, the new composition opens intriguing scenarios whenever a thermal treatment is required to apply or to sinter the glass, such as in the production of scaffolds or the deposition of coatings.  相似文献

Two organo-modified clays for food contact applications were developed to produce hydrophobically modified montmorillonite and hence to obtain better compatibility between the biopolymer and the filler (nanoclay). These nanofillers were characterised by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) in order to study their composition, structure and thermal stability. The fillers were used to reinforce polylactic acid (PLA) bottles, which were characterised using different techniques such as mechanical and barrier properties, morphology and thermal stability. The results were compared with conventional PLA bottles. The use of the modified clay in PLA bottles was found to lead to an improvement in mechanical and barrier properties. Finally, cytotoxicity tests were carried out with the organo-modified clays using Caco-2 and HepG2 cell lines, with uptake of neutral red as a basal cytotoxicity biomarker.  相似文献

We compare the predictions of extended kinetic theory (EKT), where the roles of surface friction and correlation in fluctuation velocities are taken into account, with discrete element simulations of steady, fully-developed, inclined flows of identical spheres over bumpy bases, in the presence and absence of flat, frictional sidewalls. We show that the constitutive relation for the pressure of EKT must be modified in the proximity of the boundary, because of the influence of excluded volume and shielding associated with collisions of particles with the boundary itself. We also note that currently available boundary conditions for flows over bumpy planes in kinetic theory underestimate the energy dissipation. These two observations explain the lack of agreement of EKT with the simulations, in terms of the maximum angles of inclination for which steady, fully-developed flows are possible. That is, for some high angles of inclination, EKT does not have solutions, while steady flows are predicted in DEM. However, whenever a solution to the system of differential equations of EKT does exist, the predicted distributions of velocity, solid volume fraction and granular temperature satisfactorily match the numerical measurements. The incompressible, algebraic approximation of EKT, which ignores the conduction of energy in the energy balance, admits solutions for a wider range of angles of inclination, as in the simulations, but fails to reproduce the quantitative and qualitative behaviour of solid volume fraction and granular temperature in the two conductive layers at the top and bottom of the flow. When frictional sidewalls are added to the domain, we show that the spanwise ratio of shear stress to pressure is linearly distributed in the dense core region of the flow, confirming that the sidewalls exert, on average, a Coulomb-like resistance to the flow with an effective friction coefficient which is less than half the actual particle-wall friction.  相似文献

The validity of training samples collected in field campaigns is crucial for the success of land use classification models. However, such samples often suffer from a sample selection bias and do not represent the variability of spectra that can be encountered in the entire image. Therefore, to maximize classification performance, one must perform adaptation of the first model to the new data distribution. In this paper, we propose to perform adaptation by sampling new training examples in unknown areas of the image. Our goal is to select these pixels in an intelligent fashion that minimizes their number and maximizes their information content. Two strategies based on uncertainty and clustering of the data space are considered to perform active selection. Experiments on urban and agricultural images show the great potential of the proposed strategy to perform model adaptation.  相似文献

In this paper, we present Esteem (Emergent Semantics and cooperaTion in multi-knowledgE EnvironMents), a community-based P2P platform for supporting semantic collaboration among a set of independent peers, without prior reciprocal knowledge and no predefined relationships. Goal of Esteem is to go beyond the existing state-of-the-art solutions for P2P knowledge sharing and to provide an integrated platform for both data and service discovery. A distinguishing feature of Esteem is the use of semantic communities to explicitly give shape to the collective knowledge and expertise of peer groups with similar interests. Key techniques of Esteem will be presented in the paper and concern: shuffling-based communication, ontology and service matchmaking, context management, and quality-aware data integration. An application example of data and service discovery in the health-care domain will be presented, by also discussing results of system and user evaluation.  相似文献
