Non-specific antitumoral activity of staphylococcal enterotoxins

St. aureus enterotoxins A and B possess an antitumour effect. After intraperitoneal inoculation they decrease the size and in some cases prevent the development of the human hypernephroma in the cheek pouch of golden hamsters. The effect of enterotoxins may possibly consist in inducing the production of endogenous immune interferon which activates the host immune system and enhances the rejection of heterologous tumour cells.     

Vesicular transport of nutrients in the small intestine during natural feeding

Ultrastructural aspects of the absorption of nutrients by the rat small bowel under natural feeding and administration of a food mixture homogenate to a small bowel strip were studied. It is shown that as early as 25 min after the onset of feeding, nutrients get into the proximal part of the small bowel, run across the epithelial barrier and enter the stroma of the intestinal villi and the vascular bed. Active absorption of nutrients is also observed in situ under limited intracavitary hydrolysis. The identified nutrients penetrate the apical membrane of enterocytes by pinocytosis, are detectable but inside vesicular structures of the cell, and get into the intercellular space by exocytosis. The concept of the existence of the control systems preventing foreign substances from penetration in the body and eliminating the sequels of such a penetration has been worded.     

Distribution of one of the ascitic fluid antigens of ovarian cancer patients in malignant tumors of the stomach and intestines

The indirect immunofluorescent technique was used to study the distribution of the ascitic fluid antigen (AgD) on histological sections from surgical specimens of gastric and colon tumours from proximal to distal lines of resection. AgD was found in gastric tumours exceptionally in the tumour area and in colon cancer--both in the tumour stroma and in surrounding histologically normal mucosa.     

Biochemical quality assessment of broiler production using a hydrogen bacteria biomass in the diet

The authors studied the biochemical composition of the meat of broilers, eggs, liver and muscles of laying hens of 3 generations on a 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100% (broilers), 10 and 20% (laying hens) replacement of the animal protein quota in the diet by protein obtained from the hydrogen bacteria Alcaligenes eutrophus L-1. No deterioration of the quality of the produce was found from the standpoint of the main biochemical parameters.     

Prophylactic effect of enteral feeding preparations during the chemotherapy of oncology patients

Altogether 124 patients were followed up for disseminated breast cancer (82) and hematosarcoma (42). The patients were divided into two groups: the main group was given 500 ml of 20% protein or low-lactose enteral feeding in addition to the hospital diet; the control group received only the hospital diet. Chemotherapy lasted 3 weeks. The patients on chemotherapy received enteral feeding every day throughout the entire treatment period. In the course of treatment, the patients were examined for blood characteristics, size of the tumor and affected lymph nodes, body weight, major metabolism, protein metabolism, vitamin metabolism, osmotic and peroxide resistance of red cells, and liver function. The research program covered more than 150 characteristics. The data obtained were processed by computer. It has been disclosed that inclusion of protein and low-lactose enteral feeding into the diet of cancer patients improves the alimentary status, decreases the leukopenia and thrombocytopenia incidence. It is advisable that specialized milk concentrates (enteral feeding) should be included into the diet of cancer patients as a necessary component of a complex of therapeutic measures used during chemotherapy.     

Differentiated dietotherapy of patients with obesity and hyperuricemia

Asymptomatic hyperuricemia was recognized in 344 patients with obesity. The use of low-calorie diets led to a reduction in the body weight and made purine metabolism more normal. The correcting effect was most remarkable with the use of low-caloric diets with a low purine content. Inasmuch hyperuricemia of long standing plays an important role in the development of podarga, atherosclerosis, it is recommended that obese patients should be treated with the diets with a low content of food purines.     

Effect of vitamins A, E and K on the indices of the glutathione antiperoxide system in gingival tissues in periodontosis

Glutathione reductase is activated and the content of glutathione sulfhydryl groups is increased in the gingival tissue of patients afficted with parodontosis. The degree of alterations depends on the degree of the development and character of the disease. Application of antioxidant vitamin therapy (vitamins A, E and K) locally and per os normalizes the parameters under study and improves the status of the parodontium.
