This paper assesses the impacts of a GTL plant on the expansion of Brazil's oil refining segment. The GTL plant (50,000 bpd) was sized to start up operations in 2015, producing diesel and naphtha through the indirect route (FT-synthesis). This plant will consume the non-associated natural gas production from the recent discoveries at the Santos Basin (around 419 Bm3), and the associated gas production from the Campos Basin. Both basins are located in the Southeast of Brazil, the most populated, rich and industrialized region of the country. Two different criteria for refinery expansion were simulated in order to meet oil product demand scenarios. Findings show that depending on the refinery expansion criteria considered GTL will play a fundamental hole to meet the oil product demand forecast to Brazil in the next 10 years.  相似文献

Mono-, di-, tri-, and tetrathioarsenate, as well as methylated arsenic oxy- and thioanions, were determined besides arsenite and arsenate in geothermal waters of Yellowstone National Park using anion-exchange chromatography inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Retention time match with synthetic standards, measured S:As ratios, and molecular electrospray mass spectra support the identification. Acidification was unsuitable for arsenic species preservation in sulfidic waters, with HCI addition causing loss of total dissolved arsenic, presumably by precipitation of arsenic-sulfides. Flash-freezing is preferred for the preservation of arsenic species for several weeks. After thawing, samples must be analyzed immediately. Thioarsenates occurred over a pH range of 2.1 to 9.3 in the geothermal waters. They clearly predominated under alkaline conditions (up to 83% of total arsenic), but monothioarsenate also was detected in acidic waters (up to 34%). Kinetic studies along a drainage channel showed the importance of thioarsenates for the fate of arsenic discharged from the sulfidic hot spring. The observed arsenic speciation changes suggest three separate reactions: the transformation of trithioarsenate to arsenite (major initial reaction), the stepwise ligand exchange from tri- via di- and monothioarsenate to arsenate (minor reaction), and the oxidation of arsenite to arsenate, which only becomes quantitatively important after thioarsenates have disappeared.  相似文献

Molecular methods have become vital epidemiological tools in the detection and characterization of bacteria associated with a foodborne outbreak. We used both culture and real-time PCR to detect a Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolate associated with a foodborne outbreak. The outbreak occurred in July 2002 in Polk County, Florida, and originated at a Chinese buffet, with one person being hospitalized. The hospital isolated V. parahaemolyticus from the patient but destroyed the sample after diagnosis. From an onsite visit of the restaurant, food samples that possibly contributed to the outbreak were collected and sent to the Florida Department of Health, Tampa Branch Laboratory. Crab legs, crabsticks, and mussel samples were homogenized and incubated according to the Food and Drug Administration Bacteriological Analytical Manual culture protocol. Three sets of primers and a TaqMan probe were designed to target the tdh, trh, and tlh genes and used for real-time PCR. This study was successful in isolating V. parahaemolyticus from a mussel sample and detecting two of its genes (tdh and tlh) in food and pure culture by real-time PCR.  相似文献

Purpose

To investigate characteristics of the eyelid margins, meibomian glands and the tear film of contact lens wearers, and to determine whether these characteristics were related to symptoms of contact lens discomfort.

Methods

A cross sectional study was performed on thirty existing daily wear soft contact lens wearers (6 male; 24 female) with median age of 23 years (range 18–41). Eyelid signs and tear film characteristics were evaluated during a single visit and subjects completed the contact lens and dry eye questionnaire (CLDEQ-8) to evaluate ocular discomfort.

Results

Based on the CLDEQ-8 responses, subjects were classified as symptomatic (n?=?17) or asymptomatic (n?=?13). Grades of foam at meibomian gland orifices (3?±?1), expressibility (2?±?1) and quality of secretions (2?±?1), tear evaporation rate with (112?±?54?g/m2/h) or without (88?±?45?g/m2/h) contact lens wear, fluorescein tear breakup time (8?±?2 seconds) and tear lipid layer thickness (45?±?17?nm) were significantly associated with symptoms of discomfort in symptomatic lens wearers only (r2?>?0.45; p value?<?0.05). Upper lid-wiper epitheliopathy, meibomian gland acini reflectivity and tear meniscus height showed significant correlations with comfort scores in both symptomatic and asymptomatic contact lens wearers (p?<?0.05). A greater number of Demodex mites was also observed in the upper eyelid of symptomatic lens wearers (2?±?1) compared to asymptomatic lens wearers (0?±?0; p value?=?0.042).

Conclusions

Morphological irregularities of the meibomian glands and alterations to tear film secretions that affect tear evaporative dynamics were associated with symptoms of discomfort amongst the symptomatic lens wearers.  相似文献

The genus Salmonella is composed of more than 2,400 serotypes, many of which cause enteric diseases in humans and animals. Several Salmonella serotypes are multidrug resistant, and there is evidence of the clonal spread of these strains from animals to humans. Salmonella enterica serotype Newport is one of the serotypes that increasingly present a multidrug-resistant phenotype. Source tracking and antibiotic resistance testing are important considerations for identifying the outbreak strain. The first goal of this study was to examine the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of clinical and environmental Salmonella Newport isolates from various geographic locations and to compare the discriminatory ability of two DNA fingerprinting techniques. The second goal was to determine whether the antibiotic resistance profiles and typing patterns correlated. Thirty Salmonella Newport isolates, including environmental and human clinical strains, were subjected to pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), ribotyping, and antibiotic susceptibility testing. Eighty percent of the isolates showed total or intermediate resistance to one or more drugs; 75% of the isolates were multidrug resistant. Ribotyping with the EcoRI enzyme and PFGE with the XbaI enzyme each divided the isolates into 14 groups. Cluster analysis based on antibiotic susceptibility patterns generated 23 profiles. The susceptible and resistant isolates were not differentiated on the basis of either of the molecular typing techniques. Hence, no correlation was observed between the antibiotic resistance profiles and the DNA subtyping patterns. In conclusion, ribotyping is as discriminatory as PFGE and, when used in combination with antibiotic resistance profiles, provides a powerful tool for the source tracking of Salmonella Newport.  相似文献

We investigated nonisothermal (fast) and nominally isothermal hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of Nannochloropsis sp. microalgae for the production of biocrude. Biocrude yields ranged from 36 to 45 wt % (dry weight), with fast HTL with low mass loading giving the highest yield. This condition also gave the biocrude with the lowest heating value, which indicates there are compromises to be made between biocrude quantity and quality. The aqueous phase and biocrude product fractions were characterized using elemental analysis and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT‐ICR MS). This detailed level of analysis identified more than 30,000 unique molecular products. The aqueous phase products included compounds with the same molecular formulae as known herbicides, which may inform efforts in genetic engineering of algae and/or bacteria for cultivation on the aqueous phase. Male and female weanling rats were fed diets containing 2 or 42% of calories as corn oil or 40% as beef tallow plus 2% as corn oil until they were 12 or 18 weeks of age. Incorporation of C14-acetate into lipids of serum and liver and concentration of lipids in serum, liver, and carcass at the end of these periods were determined. Net synthesis of noncholesterol lipid was repressed by changing the diet from 2% to 42% of calories from either dietary fat in both sexes and at both ages. Cholesterol net synthesis was enhanced 29-fold in males and 22-fold in females fed 42% corn oil compared to 2% corn oil to the age of 12 weeks. It was enhanced only 2.6-fold for males and 3.4-fold for females by 40% beef tallow plus 2% corn oil. At 18 weeks of age cholesterol synthesis in males fed 42% corn oil was 7.3 and in females 9.1 times the value for those fed 2% corn oil. At this age the values for rats fed 40% beef tallow plus 2% corn oil were 1.2 and 3.7 times those for 2% corn oil fed rats of the respective sexes.  相似文献

This study was designed to examine whether n−3 and n−6 polyunsaturated fatty acids at a very low dietary level (about 0.2%) would alter liver activities in respect to fatty acid oxidation. Obese Zucker rats were used because of their low level of fatty acid oxidation, which would make increases easier to detect. Zucker rats were fed diets containing different oil mixtures (5%, w/w) with the same ratio of n−6/n−3 fatty acids supplied either as fish oil or arachidonic acid concentrate. Decreased hepatic triacylglycerol levels were observed only with the diet containing fish oil. In mitochondrial outer membranes, which support carnitine palmitoyltransferase I activity, cholesterol content was similar for all diets, while the percentage of 22∶6n−3 and 20∶4n−6 in phospholipids was enhanced about by 6 and 3% with the diets containing fish oil and arachidonic acid, respectively. With the fish oil diet, the only difference found in activities related to fatty acid oxidation was the lower sensitivity of carnitine palmitoyltransferase I to malonyl-CoA inhibition. With the diet containing arachidonic acid, peroxisomal fatty acid oxidation and carnitine palmitoyltransferase I activity were markedly depressed. Compared with the control diet, the diets enriched in fish oil and in arachidonic acid gave rise to a higher specific activity of aryl-ester hydrolase in microsomal fractions. We suggest that slight changes in composition of n−3 or n−6 polyunsaturated fatty acids in mitochondrial outer membranes may alter carnitine palmitoyltransferase I activity.  相似文献

The cultural setting in which people live influences how they view contraceptives and, ultimately, what method—if any—they decide to use. While a method's effectiveness, safety and convenience always are important to users, these attributes and others may be viewed differently by different groups. If specific attributes are viewed negatively, method acceptability and use will be low. It is imperative that organizations conducting contraceptive research and development take cultural factors into account so that they can design methods that will have broad appeal. Family planning programs and other groups working to introduce and adapt contraceptive methods to specific populations also need to take cultural factors into account in order to develop the most appropriate distribution channels, publicity campaigns, and educational materials. Agencies and programs working to make methods more culturally appropriate must obtain ethnographic data on how people perceive family planning, and integrate this information into their plans.  相似文献
