The ingestion of I-131 by pregnant women can have consequences for the developing foetus, in particular brain function. As the foetal thyroid accumulates iodine from the twelfth week of gestation onwards, the determination of foetal brain dose resulting from such I-131 accumulation is essential. Normal dosimetric methods fail to treat the case of foetus. Using an approximation method based on the MIRD approach, a foetal dose estimation scheme is developed to allow the determination of foetal brain dose from foetal thyroid irradiation. Dose values are obtained for the foetus based on the maternal intake of I-131. It was found that the choice of biokinetic model for the mother/foetus has a large impact on the determined dose estimate.  相似文献

A simple hydrodynamic model is proposed for use in the design, scale-up and characterization of external loop air-lift reactors. The approach is based upon a momentum balance for the flow loop coupled with a drift-flux equation for the reactor riser and establishes a rational basis for a predictive model relating gas throughput to induced liquid flow and gas hold-up in a range of air-lift reactors. The effective resistance of the reactor, k, defined in terms of the total loss coefficients of the reactor and the aerated height of the two-phase riser, was identified to allow for the quantification of the influence of reactor design on the hydrodynamic variables. An extensive body of data for the air-water system, collected on two reactors with active volumes of 0·055 m3 and 0·3 m3, is presented and used, in conjunction with literature data encompassing a wide range of reactor geometries and flow conditions, to define a unique relationship between flow behaviour and reactor configuration. The model, which accounts for the prevailing flow regime in the reactor, provides a direct method of predicting hydrodynamic behaviour in relatively non-viscous systems.  相似文献

EPW (Electron–Phonon coupling using Wannier functions) is a program written in Fortran90 for calculating the electron–phonon coupling in periodic systems using density-functional perturbation theory and maximally localized Wannier functions. EPW can calculate electron–phonon interaction self-energies, electron–phonon spectral functions, and total as well as mode-resolved electron–phonon coupling strengths. The calculation of the electron–phonon coupling requires a very accurate sampling of electron–phonon scattering processes throughout the Brillouin zone, hence reliable calculations can be prohibitively time-consuming. EPW combines the Kohn–Sham electronic eigenstates and the vibrational eigenmodes provided by the Quantum ESPRESSO package (see Giannozzi et al., 2009 [1]) with the maximally localized Wannier functions provided by the wannier90 package (see Mostofi et al., 2008 [2]) in order to generate electron–phonon matrix elements on arbitrarily dense Brillouin zone grids using a generalized Fourier interpolation. This feature of EPW leads to fast and accurate calculations of the electron–phonon coupling, and enables the study of the electron–phonon coupling in large and complex systems.

This paper presents tangible augmented reality gaming environment that can be used to enhance entertainment using a multimodal tracking interface. Players can interact using different combinations between a pinch glove, a Wiimote, a six-degrees-of-freedom tracker, through tangible ways as well as through I/O controls. Two tabletop augmented reality games have been designed and implemented including a racing game and a pile game. The goal of the augmented reality racing game is to start the car and move around the track without colliding with either the wall or the objects that exist in the gaming arena. Initial evaluation results showed that multimodal-based interaction games can be beneficial in gaming. Based on these results, an augmented reality pile game was implemented with goal of completing a circuit of pipes (from a starting point to an end point on a grid). Initial evaluation showed that tangible interaction is preferred to keyboard interaction and that tangible games are much more enjoyable.  相似文献

We propose a new class of channel allocation algorithms that are simple, robust and require no communication between interfering WLANs. We show they are provably correct and yet remarkably efficient under a wide range of network conditions and topologies. The algorithms are suited to implementation on standard equipment, requiring no special hardware support and making only light demands on computational resources. We demonstrate this by implementing algorithms on an experimental testbed using commodity hardware. We present detailed measurements of performance in a real office environment. This environment includes complex spatially-varying noise, channel-dependent interference between WLANs, time-varying channel quality and external interference sources. Despite these challenges the algorithm performs well.  相似文献

Using the attainable region approach, feasible compositions and conversions for random copolymers are determined, along with altermatives for the related reactor configurations. This analysis attempts to find all of the possible compositions that can be produced by any system of reactros and mixing. The average copolymer compositions are bounded by the feed composition and the instantaneous copolymer composition produced at the initial conditions. Since the instantaneous copolymer composition can be found through the Mayo‐Lewis equation, that case and the feed composition mark the limiting feasible compositions. The results can also be used to determine the range of feed compositions for which a specific copolymer product composition is possible. If the addition of monomer at any point in the reactor system is possible, e.g., by side‐feeding, the analysis indicates that any desired copolymer composition can be obtained.  相似文献

For certain patients who experience intense vertigo arising from unilateral vestibular lesions, the primary therapy is a vestibular nerve section, an intracranial surgical procedure. One alternative to this treatment is therapeutic ablation of vestibular function on the unaffected side using an ototoxic agent. We prepared a biodegradable sustained-release gel delivery system using sodium hyaluronate that can be administered into the middle ear using only a local anesthetic. The gel contains gentamycin sulfate, the ototoxic agent of choice for treatment of unilateral vestibulopathy, and it exhibits diffusion-controlled release of the drug over a period of hours. The released gentamycin could then diffuse into the inner ear through the round membrane. This represents an important advance over previous formulations, which used only gentamycin sulfate solutions, in that it should allow more careful control of the dose, it should reduce loss of the drug from the middle ear site, and it should maintain intimate contact with the round membrane. By carefully controlling the dose, it should be possible to inhibit vestibular function while minimizing hearing loss. Herein we describe the in vitro release kinetics of gentamycin sulfate from sodium hyaluronate gels and find that the system obeys Fickian behavior.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The pancreatic lesions of cystic fibrosis develop in utero and closely resemble those of chronic pancreatitis. Therefore, we hypothesized that mutations of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene may be more common than expected among patients with chronic pancreatitis. METHODS: We studied 134 consecutive patients with chronic pancreatitis (alcohol-related disease in 71, hyperparathyroidism in 2, hypertriglyceridemia in 1, and idiopathic disease in 60). We examined DNA for 22 mutations of the CFTR gene that together account for 95 percent of all mutations in patients with cystic fibrosis in the northwest of England. We also determined the length of the noncoding sequence of thymidines in intron 8, since the shorter the sequence, the lower the proportion of normal CFTR messenger RNA. RESULTS: The 94 male and 40 female patients ranged in age from 16 to 86 years. None had a mutation on both copies of the CFTR gene. Eighteen patients (13.4 percent), including 12 without alcoholism, had a CFTR mutation on one chromosome, as compared with a frequency of 5.3 percent among 600 local unrelated partners of persons with a family history of cystic fibrosis (P<0.001). A total of 10.4 percent of the patients had the 5T allele in intron 8 (14 of 134), which is twice the expected frequency (P=0.008). Four patients were heterozygous for both a CFTR mutation and the 5T allele. Patients with a CFTR mutation were younger than those with no mutations (P=0.03). None had the combination of sinopulmonary disease, high sweat electrolyte concentrations, and low nasal potential-difference values that are diagnostic of cystic fibrosis. CONCLUSIONS: Mutations of the CFTR gene and the 5T genotype are associated with chronic pancreatitis.  相似文献
