Optisim: A System Simulation Methodology for Optically Interconnected HPC Systems

Although CAD tools have significantly assisted electronic system simulation, the system-level optoelectronics modeling field has lagged behind due to a lack of simulation methodologies and tools. Optisim, a system-level modeling and simulation methodology of optical interconnects for HPC systems, can provide computer architects, designers, and researchers with a highly optimized, efficient, and accurate discrete-event environment to test various HPC systems.     

Interaction of transport resistances with biochemical reaction in packed-bed solid-state fermentors: effect of temperature gradients

Subdermal superficial liposuction, first presented by the authors at the ISAPS Congress at Zurich in 1989, is performed with thin three-hole Mercedes cannulas (diameter ranges from 1.8 to 2 mm) to treat small and secondary adiposities and to allow better skin retraction. Suction of the subdermal layer of fat reduces the thickness and consistency of the superficial fat and enhances the possibility of skin retraction. In cases where there is a large adiposity of the abdomen, arms, or inner thighs, there is a conspicuous volume of fat whose weight tends to overstretch and to carry the overlying skin downward. In these cases we need to reduce the large fat volume to permit effective skin retraction. Therefore, we apply the principles of traditional liposuction with those of subdermal superficial liposuction to aspirate large amounts of fat from all the adipose layers. We call this technique Massive All Layer Liposuction (MALL). The amount of skin shrinkage after this "defatting" procedure is remarkable and the clinical results are very good. The MALL technique can be applied to other areas as well. In our experience this new liposuction technique has dramatically reduced the indications of abdominoplasties and dermolipectomies of inner thighs and arms.

Fabrication of Food Grade Vitamin E Nanoemulsion by Low Energy Approach,Characterization and Its Application

The present study was carried out to fabricate the food grade vitamin E acetate nanoemulsion using edible mustard oil and to evaluate its improved bioactivities. A food-grade vitamin E acetate nanoemulsion was fabricated using the edible mustard oil and surfactant Tween-80. Flocculation was not observed for 15 days. The nanoemulsion was characterized for droplet morphology and size distribution using atomic force microscope and zetasizer, respectively. We observe a stable nanoemulsion of spherical morphology and a size distribution of 86.45 ± 3.61 nm. Further, the high-performance liquid chromatography method was used to determine the vitamin E acetate concentration and encapsulation efficiency for the stable nanoemulsion. These nanoemulsions showed improved bioactivity, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity and could be potentially used to increase the shelf life of fruit juice.     

The Lithiation Reactivity and Selectivity of Differentially Branched Alkyldiphenylphosphine Oxides – A Simple and Versatile Approach to ortho‐Functionalized Arylphosphine Oxides

Alkyldiphenylphosphine oxides typically undergo α‐deprotonation with alkyllithium reagents. Here, the lithiation of differentially branched alkyldiphenylphosphine oxides was investigated and a diverse, but predictable reactivity was found. γ‐Branched derivatives undergo selective directed ortho‐metalation (DoM) using butyllithium and TMEDA as an additive. With decreasing degree of γ‐branching α‐lithiation becomes predominant. The ortho‐phosphinoyllithium intermediates are subject to functionalization and C C bond forming reactions, thus providing a convenient approach to new phosphine oxides and phosphine‐borane complexes, which have a good potential for an approach to new ligands for catalysis.

     

Design of a high-speed optical interconnect for scalable shared-memory multiprocessors

Large-scale distributed shared-memory multiprocessors (DSMs) provide a shared address space by physically distributing the memory among different processors. A fundamental DSM communication problem that significantly affects scalability is an increase in remote memory latency as the number of system nodes increases. Remote memory latency, caused by accessing a memory location in a processor other than the one originating the request, includes both communication latency and remote memory access latency over I/O and memory buses. The proposed architecture reduces remote memory access latency by increasing connectivity and maximizing channel availability for remote communication. It also provides efficient and fast unicast, multicast, and broadcast capabilities, using a combination of aggressively designed multiplexing techniques. Simulations show that this architecture provides excellent interconnect support for a highly scalable, high-bandwidth, low-latency network.     

PHYSIOLOGICAL AND MORPHOLOGICAL CHANGES IN IMMOBILIZED L. PLANTARUM NCIM 2084 CELLS DURING REPEATED BATCH FERMENTATION FOR PRODUCTION OF LACTIC ACID

L. Plantarum NCIM 2084 cells are homofermentative, essentially producing lactic acid as the main end product of glucose fermentation. Prolonged use through repeated batch fermentation with the cells of L. plantarum immobilized on chitosan treated polypropylene matrix showed a shift in the metabolic pathway from the homofermentative to heterofermentative, accompanied by morphological changes in immobilized cells from the normal rod shape to the coccoid shape. These changes appear to be related to a shift in the bacterial cell metabolism, resulting in a decrease in lactic acid yields.     

Low-fat sweet syrup cheese ball (Rosogolla) manufacturing and effect of lowering fat on quality

Low-fat sweet syrup cheese ball (Rosogolla) was manufactured by using low-fat cow milk and implementing six different combinations viz. type of chhana and two different concentrations (40 and 50o Brix) of cooking medium. Experimental Rosogolla samples and control were analysed for physico-chemical, textural and sensory properties. A 40o Brix concentration of sugar syrup as a cooking medium gave a highly acceptable low-fat Rosogolla. Average composition of low-fat Rosogolla is, moisture—49.83%, fat—4.66%, protein—11.85%, sorbitol—32.41% and ash—0.90%. Rheological properties of the most acceptable low-fat Rosogolla were hardness—6.78 N, springiness—5.72 mm, gumminess—3.2 N, chewiness—18.92 Nmm and stiffness—0.95 N/mm.     

Simulation of an adiabatic packed bed reactor

A model has been developed for adiabatic packed bed reactors which includes all the intra-particle and interphase effects plus the additional effect of axial diffusion. The computer time required for the solution was considerably less than in earlier models. The technique is based on the application of the orthogonal collocation method to both the single particle and the external field, thereby reducing the whole problem into one of solving a number of simultaneous first order ordinary differential equations.     

Studies on the contamination of feed molasses for continuous ethanol production in an immobilised yeast cell reactor

With the present world problem of fossil fuel limitations, alcohol production from renewable resources such as sugar cane molasses, particularly by continuous processes, has become important. In continuous processing, feed contamination problems could become critical. A useful inexpensive technique, which can minimise these problems when molasses is used as the substrate, is to ensure that the time period elapsing after dilution of molasses and before feeding to the reactor is minimal. Experiments were conducted to determine how long the clarified molasses feed solution could be kept under non-sterile conditions without affecting the performance of an immobilised whole cell reactor for alcohol production. For this purpose, the fastest growing contaminant (under the prevailing conditions) present in molasses feed solution was isolated by plating technique. From the initial total number of contaminant microorganisms in the feed solution, and from the experimentally determined generation time of the fastest growing contaminant cells, the safe period of storage of diluted molasses was calculated. This value was in reasonable agreement with the experimental observations.
