Glass plies can be bonded together by polymeric interlayers to form laminated glass. Thanks to the capacity in finding alternative stress paths after partial breakage, it is commonly accepted that the more the layers are, the higher the safety level is. However, a negative aspect is that the tensile strength of glass carries a size effect in terms of surface area, which increases with lamination. Here we evaluate these competing factors by calibrating the partial safety factors to be used in semi-probabilistic (level-I) design, through comparison with probabilistic (level-III) methods in paradigmatic case-studies under wind, snow, and dead weight. Starting from a two-parameter Weibull distribution for glass strength, the “failure modes” approach determines the statistical distribution of strength for a multi-laminate as a function of the number of plies, which interferes with the statistics for actions. As a function of the target probability of failure for the assigned class of consequence, we introduce a new coefficient in the verification formula of level-I, to account for the effects of lamination with dependence upon the number of plies. We find that there is strong gain when passing from a monolith to a two-ply laminate, but the advantage fades by increasing the number of layers. Verification formulas of this type could avoid overconservative design.  相似文献

Quantitative measurement of intramolecular and intermolecular interactions in protein structure is an elusive task, not easy to address experimentally. The phenomenon denoted ‘energetic coupling’ describes short- and long-range interactions between two residues in a protein system. A powerful method to identify and quantitatively characterize long-range interactions and allosteric networks in proteins or protein–ligand complexes is called double-mutant cycles analysis. In this review we describe the thermodynamic principles and basic equations that underlie the double mutant cycle methodology, its fields of application and latest employments, and caveats and pitfalls that the experimentalists must consider. In particular, we show how double mutant cycles can be a powerful tool to investigate allosteric mechanisms in protein binding reactions as well as elusive states in protein folding pathways.  相似文献

Comprehensive and contemporary evaluations of physical, chemical and toxicological endpoints have been performed on bed sediments of the Po River, the major Italian watercourse. Two extensive sampling campaigns were conducted in summer and winter low-flow conditions. Composite sediment samples were collected from ten reaches of the main river: the first was located in the upper region (ambient control), and the others downstream of the confluences of nine principal tributaries. The two sampling programs were paralleled by contemporary investigations on the macroinvertebrate community. The particle-size composition along the Po River showed a relatively uniform distribution of fine sand, a progressive downstream decrease of coarse sands and a corresponding increase of fine materials. The levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), extractable organo halides (EOX), Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn were determined in sediment fine particles (< 63 microm), and showed marked changes across the ten river reaches. Their longitudinal trends, as those of organic carbon and total nitrogen, were very similar and largely independent of the survey season. Sediment quality benchmarks were used to evaluate sediment chemistry, and, although the overall level of contamination was from moderate to low, the reaches located downstream of the tributaries Dora Riparia, Dora Baltea, Lambro and Oglio were considered to be at risk. Sediments were tested for toxicity on Oncorhynchus mykiss, Ceriodaphnia dubia, Raphidocelis subcapitata and Vibrio fischeri. The toxicity tests were conducted both with sediment extracts and whole samples. Sediment extracts showed toxic potentials that were consistent with the spatial distribution of contaminants. Whole-sediment toxicity showed moderate/low effects which also included false positives and negatives. Alterations of the macroinvertebrate community were found for many kilometers downstream of Dora Riparia, and with a seasonal dependence, also in other reaches of the Italian river. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to describe the longitudinal and temporal changes of the Po River, and allowed the selection of the most useful and discriminating indicators.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a novel, automatic and unsupervised change-detection approach to the analysis of single-channel single-polarization multitemporal SAR images. The statistical parameters of the changed and unchanged classes, which are assumed to follow a generalized Gaussian (GG) distribution in the analysed log-ratio image, are explicitly estimated by the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm initialized with a robust strategy based on genetic algorithms (GAs). In addition, the proposed approach integrates two further processing capabilities. The first one intends to cope with the problem of the automatic detection of multiple changes in the scene. This is carried out by modelling the log-ratio image histogram with a multimodal GG mixture whose number of components is estimated basing on the Bayesian information criterion (BIC). The second processing capability allows exploitation of spatial contextual information in the change detection process through a Markovian formulation. Results obtained on both simulated and real data are reported and discussed.  相似文献

Tool-tip frequency response function (FRF) is essential to predict chatter vibration in milling. This key input can be acquired by experimental tests, but a new test has to be performed for every tool clamped on the machine. To avoid such time-consuming procedures, receptance coupling methods have been developed, allowing coupling of the experimental dynamic response of the machine to the numerical model of the tool. Such techniques require joint rotation response, which is hard to experimentally identify. Inversion of receptance coupling technique is usually performed on additional experimental measurements to overcome this issue. This procedure amplifies measurement uncertainties, reducing accuracy of the coupling approach. In this article, a novel receptance coupling technique is presented. Machine and toolkit are connected through two distinct points, eliminating the experimental phase and computation of rotational degrees of freedom (DOFs). Only translation responses are required, acquired by a single test setup. Proposed technique was experimentally validated on different case studies.  相似文献
