Fabrication of curved micro structures on photoresist layer

A novel fabrication process for micro patterns with curvature was introduced. The curved structures were made by compensating rectangular micro structures with liquid photoresist layer. Because of the surface tension of the liquid in micro scale, various shapes of meniscus can be made on the micro channels. The micro channels were made on the silicon substrate in advance, and then the liquid layer was coated on the micro channels. From the nature of liquid behavior, the curved patterns with smooth surface are obtained, which cannot be made easily with the conventional mechanical machining, as well as with the microfabrication processes, such as wet and dry etching. With this principle, it is expected that the smooth and curved surfaces can be made by simple processes and the results can be applied widely, such as optical patterns.     

Results of transition zone biopsy in black and white men with suspected prostate cancer

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether biopsy-detectable transition zone tumors are more common in black than in white men with suspected Stage T1c and T2 prostate cancer. METHODS: We performed a prospective study of transition zone prostate biopsy (TZ biopsy) in 1 78 black and 261 white men who had not undergone previous prostate biopsy and in 61 black and 65 white men who had undergone one benign sextant peripheral zone prostate biopsy (PZ biopsy). RESULTS: The mean age of the 239 black and 326 white study patients was 68.6+/-7.4 and 67.2+/-7.2 years, respectively (P = 0.02), the mean prostate-specific antigen (PSA) was 8.4+/-7.4 and 6.4+/-5.4 ng/mL, respectively (P = 0.003), and the mean PSA density was 0.20+/-0.23 and 0.16+/-0.16 ng/mL/mL, respectively (P = 0.006). Overall, cancer was diagnosed by TZ biopsy only in 7 black men (3%) and in no white men (0%) (P = 0.003). However, cancer detection with a TZ biopsy only was not significantly different in the black and white men when controlled for age, PSA, or PSA density (P>0.90). A TZ biopsy only detected cancer in 1% of patients who had not undergone prior PZ biopsy and in 2% of patients who had undergone prior PZ biopsy. Of the seven cancers detected with TZ biopsy, six (86%) had a Gleason score of 2 to 6. CONCLUSIONS: Prostate cancer detection with a TZ biopsy only is not common and when controlled for confounding variables is the same in black and white men. The preferential use of TZ biopsies in black men is not warranted, and the low diagnostic yield argues against routine use of the biopsy technique in men of either race.     

A structure-based approach to nicotinic receptor pharmacology

Infrared difference spectroscopy has been used to examine the structural effects of local anesthetic (LA) binding to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR). Several LAs induce subtle changes in the vibrational spectrum of the nAChR over a range of concentrations consistent with their reported nAChR-binding affinities. At concentrations of the desensitizing LAs prilocaine and lidocaine consistent with their binding to the ion channel pore, the vibrational changes suggest the stabilization of an intermediate conformation that shares structural features in common with both the resting and desensitized states. Higher concentrations of prilocaine and lidocaine, as well as the LA dibucaine, lead to additional binding to the neurotransmitter-binding site, the formation of physical interactions (most notably cation-tyrosine interactions) between LAs and neurotransmitter-binding-site residues, and the subsequent formation of a presumed desensitized nAChR. Although concentrations of the LA tetracaine consistent with binding to the ion channel pore elicit a reversed pattern of spectral changes suggestive of a resting state-like nAChR, higher concentrations also lead to neurotransmitter site binding and desensitization. Our results suggest that LAs stabilize multiple conformations of the nAChR by binding to at least two conformationally sensitive LA-binding sites. The spectra also reveal subtle differences in the strengths of the physical interactions that occur between LAs and binding-site residues. These differences correlate with LA potency at the nAChR.     

Whether close or far: Social distance effects on perceived balance in friendship networks.

Under what circumstances are individuals' perceptions of friendship relations shaped by the balance schema? Using data from 4 organizations varying in size from 21 to 33 members, the authors investigated how ego's perception of the social distance from ego to alter affected the proportion of alter's friendships perceived by ego as balanced. Balance involves both (a) reciprocated friendships between 2 people, and (b) transitive triplets, in which 2 friends of a person are themselves friends. Graphical and regression analyses supported a composite curvilinear model that combined the predictions of emotional tension and cognitive miser perspectives: People tended to perceive relations close to and distant from themselves as more balanced than relations of intermediate distance. Limited myocardial contractile reserve and chronotropic incompetence in patients with chronic Chagas' disease: assessment by dobutamine stress echocardiography

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether dobutamine stimulation in patients with Chagas' disease may uncover abnormal contractile responses as seen in ischemic myocardium. BACKGROUND: Segmental left ventricular (LV) dysfunction in the absence of coronary atherosclerosis is frequently seen in patients with chronic Chagas' heart disease. Myocardial ischemia and coronary microcirculation abnormalities have been found in animal models and in humans with Chagas' disease. In addition, chagasic sera may contain autoantibodies against human beta-adrenergic receptors. METHODS: Two groups of patients with Chagas' disease were studied by echocardiography: group 1 (n = 12) without and group 2 (n = 14) with LV segmental wall motion abnormalities (mostly apical aneurysm). Ten normal subjects served as control subjects. We performed qualitative assessment of wall motion and quantitative evaluation of LV cavity under baseline conditions and after dobutamine stimulation. RESULTS: Patients with Chagas' disease exhibited a blunted inotropic and chronotropic response to dobutamine stimulation. After dobutamine, fractional area change in Chagas' group 1 (54.7+/-6.6%; SD) and in group 2 (35.1+/-12.1%) were significantly lower than control group (66.7+/-2.5%; p < 0.001). In addition, in 6 of 14 group 2 patients, dobutamine induced a biphasic response with improvement at low dose and deterioration at peak dose, as seen in patients with coronary artery disease. Although the three groups had similar basal mean heart rates and attained a similar mean peak dobutamine doses, both groups of patients with Chagas' disease had a significantly blunted mean heart rate effect after dobutamine (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: Thus, dobutamine stimulation unmasks a chronotropic incompetence and a blunted myocardial contractile response in chagasic patients, even in those with no overt manifestation of heart disease.     

Effects of honing treatment on AIP-TiN and TiAlN coated end-mill for high speed machining

The objective of this work is to compare the tool performance of TiN and TiAlN coated carbides end-mills deposited by an arc ion plating (AIP) method, using honing treatment to polish the cutting edge surface sleekly. The curve of surface roughness versus honing time showed a rapid improvement initially and thereafter became steady, manifesting a saturation effect. The optimal honing time related to surface roughness was determined to be approximately 20 s. As the surface roughness increased, the critical loads reduced. At an average surface roughness (Ra) of 0.028 μm, the highest critical loads of TiN and TiAlN coating layers were 98 and 114 N, respectively. Tool performances of uncoated and coated tools were conducted under high speed machining (HSM) of AISI D2 cold-worked die steel (62 HRC). Consequently, the TiAlN coated end-mill using honing treatment showed excellent tool life under HSM conditions.
