Age and gender differences in cardiac reactivity and subjective emotion responses to emotional autobiographical memories.

This research reports age and gender differences in cardiac reactivity and subjective responses to the induction of autobiographical memories related to anger, fear, sadness, and happiness. Heart rate (HR) and subjective state were assessed at baseline and after the induction of each emotion in 113 individuals (61 men, 52 women; 66% European American, 34% African American) ranging in age from 15 to 88 years (M = 50.0; SD = 20.2). Cardiac reactivity was lower in older individuals; however, for anger and fear, these age effects were significantly more pronounced for the women than the men. There were no gender differences in subjective responses, however, suggesting that the lower cardiac reactivity found among older people is dependent on gender and the specific emotion assessed. Hybridized electronic states between CdSe nanoparticles and conjugated organic ligands: A theoretical and ultrafast photo-excited carrier dynamics study

Formation of densely packed thin films of semiconductor nanocrystals is advantageous for the exploitation of their unique optoelectronic properties for real-world applications. Here we investigate the fundamental role of the structure of the bridging ligand on the optoelectronic properties of the resulting hybrid film. In particular, we considered hybrid films formed using the same CdSe nanocrystals and two organic ligands that have the same bidentate dithiocarbamate binding moiety, but differ in their bridging structures, one bridged by ethylene, the other by phenylene that exhibits conjugation. Based on the results of photo-excited carrier dynamics experiments combined with theoretical calculations on the electronic states of bridged CdSe layers, we show that only the phenylene-based ligand presents a strong hybridization of the molecular HOMO state with CdSe layers, that is a marker of formation of an effective bridge. We argue that this hybridization spread favors the hopping of photo-excited carriers between nanocrystals, which may explain the reported larger photo-currents in phenylene-based hybrid films than those observed in ethylene-based ones.

Exploring Social Norms as a Group‐Level Phenomenon: Do Political Participation Norms Exist and Influence Political Participation on College Campuses?

This research explores the relationship between campus political norms and student political participation. This study conceptualizes norms as a group‐level construct by collecting data at several universities (k = 32 universities, n = 1,389 students) where norms vary without campaign intervention. Multilevel modeling reveals that perceptions of political norms converge within universities. Further, frequency of political communication at the group‐ and individual‐level explains increases in normative perceptions. This increase is meaningful because norms at the group level were predictive of political behaviors at the individual level. This research documents the existence of political norms beyond the individual level of analysis and highlights the important role of political norms, political communication, and social context in understanding political participation.     

Community Solar Presents Rewards and Risks

Communities, private companies, and households are increasingly turning to community solar as a way to fulfill sustainability and renewable energy goals. And for good reason—community solar can provide significant financial, social, environmental, and public relations benefits. However, due to the relatively new market and variability in financial projections and because each solar garden program and project is unique, participation in community solar comes with its own benefits, limitations, and uncertainties.     

DNA Antenna Tile‐Associated Deoxyribozyme Sensor with Improved Sensitivity

Some natural enzymes increase the rate of diffusion‐limited reactions by facilitating substrate flow to their active sites. Inspired by this natural phenomenon, we developed a strategy for efficient substrate delivery to a deoxyribozyme (DZ) catalytic sensor. This resulted in a three‐ to fourfold increase in sensitivity and up to a ninefold improvement in the detection limit. The reported strategy can be used to enhance catalytic efficiency of diffusion‐limited enzymes and to improve sensitivity of enzyme‐based biosensors.     

Getting off on the right foot: Subjective value versus economic value in predicting longitudinal job outcomes from job offer negotiations.

Although negotiation experiences can affect a negotiator's ensuing attitudes and behavior, little is known about their long-term consequences. Using a longitudinal survey design, the authors tested the degree to which economic and subjective value achieved in job offer negotiations predicts employees' subsequent job attitudes and intentions concerning turnover. Results indicate that subjective value predicts greater compensation satisfaction and job satisfaction and lower turnover intention measured 1 year later. Surprisingly, the economic outcomes that negotiators achieved had no apparent effects on these factors. Implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed. ARL1 and membrane traffic in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

To examine the functions of the Arf-like protein, Arl1p, in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a null allele, arl1delta::HIS3, was constructed in two strains. In one background only, loss of ARL1 resulted in temperature-sensitive (ts) growth (suppressed on high-osmolarity media). Allelic variation at the SSD1 locus accounted for differences between strains. Strains lacking ARL1 exhibited several defects in membrane traffic. First, arl1delta strains secreted less protein as measured by TCA-precipitable radioactivity found in the media of [(35)S]-labelled cells. A portion of newly synthesized carboxypeptidase Y (CPY) was secreted rather than correctly targeted to the vacuole. Uptake of the fluid-phase marker, lucifer yellow, was reduced. All these phenotypes were exacerbated in an ssd1 background. The ts phenotype of the arl1deltassd1 strain was suppressed by YPT1, the yeast Rab1a homologue, suggesting that ARL1 and YPT1 have partially overlapping functions. These findings demonstrate that ARL1 encodes a regulator of membrane traffic.     

Computer-assisted assessment of depression and function in older primary care patients

We wanted to test the psychometric reliability and validity of self-reported information on psychological and functional status gathered by computer in a sample of primary care outpatients. Persons aged 65 years and older visiting a primary care medical practice in Baltimore (n=240) were approached. Complete baseline data were obtained for 54 patients and 34 patients completed 1-week retest follow-up. Standard instruments were administered by computer and also given as paper and pencil tests. Test-retest reliability estimates were calculated and comparisons across mode of administration were made. Separately, an interviewer administered a questionnaire to gauge patient attitudes and feelings after using the computer. Most participants (72%) reported no previous computer use. Nevertheless, inter-method reliability of the GDS15 at baseline (0.719, n=47), intra-method reliability of the computer in time (0.797, n=31), inter-method reliability of the CESDR20 at baseline (0.740, n=53), and the correlation between the CESDR20 computer version at baseline and follow-up (0.849, n=34) were all excellent. The inter-method reliability of the CESDR20 at follow-up (0.615, n=37) was lower but still acceptable. Although 28% were anxious prior to using the computer testing system, that percent decreased to 19% while using the system. The efficiency and reliability in comparison to the paper instruments were good or better. Even though most participants had not ever used a computer prior to participating in the study, they had generally favorable attitudes toward the use of computers, and also reported having favorable experience with the computer testing system.     

New Protocols for the Synthesis of Condensed Heterocyclic Rings Through Palladium-Catalyzed Aryl Coupling Reactions

In the process of developing our aryl coupling methodology according to which aryl iodides are caused to react with aryl bromides under the catalytic action of a dual palladium/norbornene catalyst, we have worked out new protocols to cause appropriate functional groups in the aryl halides to form heterocyclic rings condensed with the first-formed biaryl intermediate. Carbazoles, dibenzopyrans, phenanthridines and azaphenanthrenes have been obtained with good yields in one-pot reactions under mild conditions.
