Summary The foraging behaviour of the Alpine Chough was studied around Cervinia (Aosta, Italy) in June and July 1989 and 1990. The birds foraging in loose flocks (of mean size 32.4) which flew to new foraging patches at very frequent intervals (median stay time 74.5 s in 1989 and 75.0 s in 1990). The Choughs' peck rates declined significantly through the summer, from around 17 items per min in mid-June to around 9 per min in late July. Examination of faeces and regurgitated pellets showed that the most common food items were Orthoptera (grasshoppers) which occurred in 83 % of samples, Coleoptera Curculionidae (55 %) and Elateridae (27 %), invertebrate eggs (26 %), Lepidopteran larvae (24 %), Hymenoptera Formicidae (18 %) and vegetable matter (18 %). Grasshoppers remained very small until mid-July and varied greatly in size and density between different parts of the study area. The Choughs' very short stay time in any one patch of meadow is consistent with their high intake rates and apparently low costs of movement between feeding sites, but they may also be sampling in a highly variable environment.
Zusammenfassung Die Nahrungssuche von AlpendohlenPyrrhocorax graculus wurde im Juni und Juli 1989 und 1990 in der Umgebung von Cervinia (Aosta, Italien) untersucht. Die Vögel bewegten sich in losen Gruppen (mittlere Gruppengröße 32,3) und wechselten in regelmäßigen Intervallen zu neuen Futterplätzen (Median der Aufenthaltsdauer 74,5 s 1989 und 75,0 s 1990). Die Pickraten der Alpendohlen nahmen im Lauf des Sommers signifikant von ca. 17 Objekten (Mitte Juni) auf 9 pro min (Ende Juli) ab. Untersuchungen von Kot, Gewöllen und einem Magen erbrachten als häufigste Nahrungsbestandteile Geradflügler (wahrscheinlich Heuschrecken) in 83 % der Proben, Käfer Curculionidae (55 %) und Elateridae (27 %), Eier von Wirbellosen (26 %), Schmetterlingslarven (24 %), Ameisen (18 %) und pflanzliches Material (18 %). Heuschrecken blieben bis Mitte Juli sehr klein und unterschieden sich in verschiedenen Teilen des Untersuchungsgebietes beträchtlich in Größe und Dichte. Die sehr kurze Aufenthaltsdauer der Alpendohlen an allen Futterplätzen stimmt mit ihren hohen Nahrungsaufnahmeraten und den offensichtlich niedrigen Kosten für Ortsveränderungen zwischen den Plätzen überein; es ist aber ebensogut möglich, daß die Beutedichte in den genutzten Gebieten sehr variabel ist.

A highly efficient solid phase synthesis approach to obtain these clinically important compounds is developed via coupling reaction between glycine-preloaded Wang resin and a set of carboxylic acids. Observations carried out on an Acrocephalus community in north-western Italy during the breeding period have confirmed the occurrence of interspecific territoriality, with Acrocephalus arundinaceus aggressively dominant toward A. scirpaceus and A. palustris. The adaptive character of such an interspecific territoriality is discussed. Data seem to suggest that shifts in territories are also depending on interspecific interactions, even though intraspecific interactions have been confirmed to have the major weight in such a phenomenon. Great Reed Warbler territories resulted to be significantly larger than those of Marsh and Reed Warbler. It may be supposed that the Great Reed Warbler has larger territories as a consequence of its stronger aggressiveness.  相似文献

In this work we apply a mathematical model of photosynthesis to quantify the potential for photosynthetic life in the very Early Archean oceans. We assume the presence of oceanic blockers of ultraviolet radiation, specifically ferrous ions. For this scenario, our results suggest a potential for photosynthetic life greater than or similar to that in later eras/eons, such as the Late Archean and the current Phanerozoic eon.  相似文献

Capsule Differences in vocalizations among populations are mostly explained on morphological bases, but historical factors may have played a significant role in differentiation processes.

Aims To investigate the relationships among vocal and morphological variation in two corvids: Chough and Alpine Chough.

Methods We used data from 11 populations of Chough and seven populations of Alpine Chough spanning the Palearctic distribution of the two species. Three data sets (morphometry, spectrotemporal parameters of trill calls and acoustic repertoire) were analysed and their variation compared with uni- and multivariate techniques.

Results In both species, morphological differences among populations were correlated to spectro-temporal variation of trills; in particular, frequencies of calls were negatively correlated to wing length (an indicator of body size). By considering only co-existing populations of the two species, the magnitude of morphological and spectrotemporal divergence was similar.

Conclusions In both species, birds from populations with similar morphology uttered similar call types and trills with close spectrotemporal features. In particular, larger-sized populations, as expressed by wing length, emitted lower pitched calls. However, the fact that dissimilarities in repertoire and morphology were correlated cannot be explained only by appealing to functional explanations, as the observed intraspecific morphological variability does not seem to be high enough to promote consistent changes in the pool of calls. In this case, historical factors might have contributed to the present pattern of differentiation.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to study the plasma membrane calcium pump (PMCA) reaction cycle by characterizing conformational changes associated with calcium, ATP, and vanadate binding to purified PMCA. This was accomplished by studying the exposure of PMCA to surrounding phospholipids by measuring the incorporation of the photoactivatable phosphatidylcholine analog 1-O-hexadecanoyl-2-O-[9-[[[2-[125I]iodo-4-(trifluoromethyl-3H-diazirin-3-yl)benzyl]oxy]carbonyl]nonanoyl]-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine to the protein. ATP could bind to the different vanadate-bound states of the enzyme either in the presence or in the absence of Ca2+ with high apparent affinity. Conformational movements of the ATP binding domain were determined using the fluorescent analog 2′(3′)-O-(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl)adenosine 5′-triphosphate. To assess the conformational behavior of the Ca2+ binding domain, we also studied the occlusion of Ca2+, both in the presence and in the absence of ATP and with or without vanadate. Results show the existence of occluded species in the presence of vanadate and/or ATP. This allowed the development of a model that describes the transport of Ca2+ and its relation with ATP hydrolysis. This is the first approach that uses a conformational study to describe the PMCA P-type ATPase reaction cycle, adding important features to the classical E1-E2 model devised using kinetics methodology only.  相似文献

The melanization reaction promoted by the prophenoloxidase-activating system is an essential defense response in invertebrates subjected to regulatory mechanisms that are still not fully understood. We report here the finding and characterization of a novel trypsin inhibitor, named panulirin, isolated from the hemocytes of the spiny lobster Panulirus argus with regulatory functions on the melanization cascade. Panulirin is a cationic peptide (pI 9.5) composed of 48 amino acid residues (5.3 kDa), with six cysteine residues forming disulfide bridges. Its primary sequence was determined by combining Edman degradation/N-terminal sequencing and electrospray ionization-MS/MS spectrometry. The low amino acid sequence similarity with known proteins indicates that it represents a new family of peptidase inhibitors. Panulirin is a competitive and reversible tight-binding inhibitor of trypsin (Ki = 8.6 nm) with a notable specificity because it does not inhibit serine peptidases such as subtilisin, elastase, chymotrypsin, thrombin, and plasmin. The removal of panulirin from the lobster hemocyte lysate leads to an increase in phenoloxidase response to LPS. Likewise, the addition of increasing concentrations of panulirin to a lobster hemocyte lysate, previously depleted of trypsin-inhibitory activity, decreased the phenoloxidase response to LPS in a concentration-dependent fashion. These results indicate that panulirin is implicated in the regulation of the melanization cascade in P. argus by inhibiting peptidase(s) in the pathway toward the activation of the prophenoloxidase enzyme.  相似文献

Background

Diet-induced obesity is a rising health concern which can lead to the development of glucose intolerance and muscle insulin resistance and, ultimately, type II diabetes mellitus. This research investigates the associations between glucose intolerance or muscle insulin resistance and tissue specific changes during the progression of diet-induced obesity.

Methodology

C57BL/6J mice were fed a normal or high-fat diet (HFD; 60% kcal fat) for 3 or 8 weeks. Disease progression was monitored by measurements of body/tissue mass changes, glucose and insulin tolerance tests, and ex vivo glucose uptake in intact muscles. Lipid metabolism was analyzed using metabolic chambers and ex vivo palmitate assays in intact muscles. Skeletal muscle, liver and adipose tissues were analyzed for changes in inflammatory gene expression. Plasma was analyzed for insulin levels and inflammatory proteins. Histological techniques were used on muscle and liver cryosections to assess metabolic and morphological changes.

Principal Findings/Conclusions

A rapid shift in whole body metabolism towards lipids was observed with HFD. Following 3 weeks of HFD, elevated total lipid oxidation and an oxidative fiber type shift had occurred in the skeletal muscle, which we propose was responsible for delaying intramyocellular lipid accumulation and maintaining muscle’s insulin sensitivity. Glucose intolerance was present after three weeks of HFD and was associated with an enlarged adipose tissue depot, adipose tissue inflammation and excess hepatic lipids, but not hepatic inflammation. Furthermore, HFD did not significantly increase systemic or muscle inflammation after 3 or 8 weeks of HFD suggesting that early diet-induced obesity does not cause inflammation throughout the whole body. Overall these findings indicate skeletal muscle did not contribute to the development of HFD-induced impairments in whole-body glucose tolerance following 3 weeks of HFD.  相似文献
