The Separation and Characterization of Carbohydrate Rich Component from Ovomucin in Chicken Eggs

We investigated the effects of near-infrared irradiation on the photoconversion of Chenopodium album water-soluble chlorophyll-binding protein (CaWSCP) in the presence of sodium hydrosulfite and found a further photoconversion from CP742 to CP763, a novel form of CaWSCP. Interestingly, one-third of the absorption peak at 668 nm was recovered in CP763, but re-irradiation under oxidative conditions eliminated the photo convertibility of CaWSCP.     

Mechanisms of modulation of neuronal nicotinic receptors by substance P and OAG

Substance P is known to modulate neuronal nicotinicacetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the sympathetic nervous system.There are two conflicting proposals for the mechanism of this effect, an indirect action mediated by protein kinase C (PKC) and a direct interaction with receptor subunits. We studied the mechanisms of thiseffect in PC-12 cells. Substance P enhanced the decay of thenicotine-induced whole cell current. This effect was fast in its onsetand was not antagonized by guanosine5'-O-(2-thiodiphosphate), a G protein blocker, orstaurosporine, a nonselective PKC blocker. Staurosporine failed toreverse the inhibition by 1-oleoyl-2-acetyl-sn-glycerol (OAG), a synthetic diacylglycerol analog known to activate PKC. Theinhibitory effects of the peptide and OAG were preserved in excisedpatches, but substance P applied to the extra patch membrane wasineffective in the cell-attached patch configuration. We conclude thatsubstance P modulates neuronal nAChRs most likely by direct interactions with the receptors but independently from activation ofPKC or G proteins and that PKC does not participate in modulation by OAG.

     

Low serum reverse T3 levels in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism

Although patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (1 degree HPT) were euthyroid, we measured serum thyroid hormone levels in 16 patients with 1 degree HPT together with 17 patients with hypercalcemia due to malignant diseases (HCM). In patients with 1 degree HPT, serum levels of T3, T4 and T3U were within normal range, but serum rT3 (reverse T3) levels (205 +/- 37 pg/ml, mean +/- SD) were significantly decreased as compared with those in normal controls (276 +/- 44 pg/ml, P less than 0.01). A significant inverse correlation was observed between the serum levels of rT3 and parathyroid hormone (PTH) (r = 0.54, P less than 0.05). After parathyroidectomy, serum rT3 levels were significantly elevated (240 +/- 56 pg/ml) compared to preoperative levels (P less than 0.01). Low levels of serum rT3 seemed to be attributed to the high levels of serum PTH. On the other hand, serum levels of T3 and T4 were low and serum rT3 levels were high in patients with HCM. Low serum rT3 allows for the differentiation of patients with 1 degree HPT from those with HCM.     

Filipin-sterol complexes in golden hamster sperm membranes with special reference to epididymal maturation

Summary The distribution of membrane filipin-sterol complexes (FSCs) was qualitatively surveyed on freeze-fracture replicas of spermatozoa from the male reproductive tract and ejaculates of golden hamster. In the head, the acrosomal plasma membrane showed the strongest filipin labeling on the principal segment, but it was absent in the quilt-like pattern areas. These latter were observed in both caput and corpus epididymal spermatozoa, but were absent in mature spermatozoa. The postacrosomal plasma membrane had few FSCs and both the outer and inner acrosomal membranes were always negative to filipin. The nuclear membrane of the principal segment was constantly filipinpositive. The nuclear membrane of the postacrosomal region had more FSCs than that of the principal segment, particularly in mature spermatozoa. Many linear, rod-like FSCs were observed on the postacrosomal nuclear membrane of mature spermatozoa, especially in the uterine spermatozoan samples. In the neck, the plasma membrane had only a few FSCs. The redundant nuclear membrane was slightly filipin-positive, while the membrane scroll of mature spermatozoa was heavily labeled. In the tail, the plasma membrane of both the middle and principal piece was moderately labeled.     

A theory of gene-culture coevolution of parental preference and sex ratio in humans

A theory on the evolution of human primary sex ratio is proposed. Effects of parental preference for sons, reflected in birth control based on offspring sex ratio and female biased infanticide, on the evolution of primary sex ratio are analyzed. Both are shown to select for female bias in primary sex ratio. The gene-culture coevolution of female infanticide and primary sex ratio is also studied and it is shown that female infanticide develops more in societies in which the father plays a more important role in the transmission of culture than the mother does.     

Lung burden of green nickel oxide aerosol and histopathological findings in rats after continuous inhalation

There are few inhalation studies of nickel carcinogenesis. In this study, Wistar male rats were exposed to green nickel oxide (NiO(G)) aerosols (mass median aerodynamic diameter, 0.6 μm) for 7 h/d, 5 d/wk for up to 12 mo. The average exposure concentration was controlled at 0.3 and 1.2 mg/m³ during the exposure. For histopathological examination and measurement of the nickel concentration in rat organs, the rats were sacrificed at 3, 6, and 12 mo of exposure and 8 mo clearance period following 12 mo of exposure. The nickel content in rat lungs that was observed up to 2.6 mg after 12 mo exposure, was proportional to the exposure concentration during the exposure. The clearance of the nickel from the lungs was very slow and the biological half time was determined 7.7 mo. Although the rats were exposed continuously to NiO(G), for 12 mo and kept for 8 mo clearance period, there were no malignant tumors in any of the exposed animals.     

Secondary release of thromboxane A2 in aerosol leukotriene C4-induced bronchoconstriction in guinea pigs

Effect of a thromboxane synthetase inhibitor (OKY-046) on bronchoconstriction induced by aerosol leukotriene C4 and histamine was studied in anesthetized, artificially ventilated guinea pigs in order to examine whether secondary release of thromboxane A2 is produced by aerosol leukotriene C4 or not. 0.01–1.0μg/ml of leukotriene C4 and 12.5–400μg/ml of histamine inhaled from ultrasonic nebulizer developed for small animals caused dose-dependent increase of pressure at airway opening (Pao) which is considered to be an index representing bronchial response. Pretreatment of the animals with intravenous OKY-046 (100mg/kg) significantly reduced the airway responses produced by inhalation of 0.1, 0.33 and 1.0μg/ml of leukotriene C4, while the pretreatment did not affect the histamine dose-response curve. Based on these findings and previous reports (6, 7), it is suggested that aerosol leukotriene C4 activates arachidonate cyclooxygenase pathway including thromboxane A2 synthesis and the released cyclooxygenase products have bronchodilating effect as a whole
