In erythrocytes recovered from blood of geckoes of the species Pachydactylus turneri collected in Gauteng Province, Republic of South Africa, leishmania zuckemani n. sp. were detected. Giemsa stained erythrocytes contained amastigotes, either single or numerous, in loose assemblies or in a compact rounded oggregates which may condense to become a round basophilic bodies with a central hollow. This new species of Leishmania differs from all previously described species in being almost exclusively parasitic in circulating erythrocytes. Three to seven amastigotes lodged all within one, or divided between several parasitophorous vacuoles were detected at the EM level. The amastigotes demonstrated essentially all the cytological components characteristic of leishmania species known to parasitize mammals. A point which emphasizes an already suggested close affiliation between mammalian and lizard Leishmania.  相似文献

Hyperinfection by the gill-infesting monogeneanAllobivagina sp. (Microcotylea) caused mass mortalities in juveniles ofSiganus luridus cultured in seawater earthen ponds and holding tanks in Eilat (Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea). Other species ofSiganus and adults ofS. luridus cultured in the same systems acquired a low intensity of infestation. Most hyperinfected fish were emaciated and anaemic with hematocrit values below 10 %. Skin and mouth infestations by the monogeneanBenedenia monticelli (Capsaloidea) caused mass mortalities in grey mullets (Mugilidae). These mortalities occurred in large individuals in wild populations ofLiza carinata from lagoonal habitats in the Gulf of Suez and in most species of grey mullets cultured in Eilat. The intensity of infestation correlated positively with severity of infestation, and the common sites of infestation corresponded with areas of severe pathological alterations. Spontaneous recovery followed the climax of an epizootic, both for infestedS. luridus and infested grey mullets. Decline in infestation coincided with remission of the pathological signs.  相似文献

Young intracellular oocysts of Schellackia cf. agamae in the gut epithelium of agama stellio were bound by several fine membranes. Later-stage oocysts and sporoblasts in the lamina propria were intercellular and were bound by a thin but firm tri-layered wall. Oocysts had a large central refractile body which, during sporulation, sent extensions into the developing sporozoites. Sporozoites escaped into the gut tissue, leaving a large oocyst residuum with the remains of a refractile body. These sporozoites invaded a variety of connective tissue cells, endothelial cells and circulatory leucocytes in the lamina propria. Sporozoites caused lysis of the host cell cytoplasm at their perimeter and multiple sporozoite infections led to complete degradation of the host cell.  相似文献

Specimens of Hepatozoon-infected Boa constrictor constrictor were obtained from localities in Pará State, north Brazil. Gametocytes in erythrocytes of the peripheral blood measured 10 x 2.5-16.2 x 3.7 microns. They were similar to those described as Haemogregarina terzii by Sambon & Seligmann (1907) in B. c. constrictor, in that they did not distort the infected erythrocyte, and their dimensions approximated those given by Carini (1947). Lungs and liver of infected snakes contained actively dividing meronts of a single type, and cysts containing two to six cystozoites were also present in the liver. Our initial feeding of Culex quinquefasciatus on infected snakes consistently resulted in a heavy death-rate of the engorged mosquitoes, with only a few surviving till the 9th day post feeding. These contained numerous oocysts which were undivided or in early stages of division. A fifth and final experiment, however, provided a few mosquitoes surviving up to 21 days post infection (dpi), and these contained fully sporulated oocysts measuring 190-200 microns in diameter and containing over 60 sporocysts of 19-30 microns in diameter. The number of sporozoites in each sporocyst was estimated as approximately 50. The nature of the parasite's sporogonic cycle in the mosquito thus justifies inclusion of this haemogregarine in the genus Hepatozoon. Two wild-caught specimens of the lizard Tropidurus torquatus were fed with mosquitoes containing fully developed oocysts (21 dpi). When sacrificed, three months later, large numbers of dizoic, tetrazoic and hexazoic cysts were demonstrated in their livers. Cystozoites released from these cysts were shown to possess a conspicuous refractile body.  相似文献

The sporogony of Hepatozoon caimani has been studied, by light microscopy, in the mosquito Culex fatigans fed on specimens of the caiman Caiman c. crocodilus showing gametocytes in their peripheral blood. Sporonts iniciate development in the space between the epithelium of the insect gut and the elastic membrane covering the haemocoele surface of the stomach. Sporulating oocysts are clustered on the gut, still invested by the gut surface membrane. Fully mature oocysts were first seen 21 days after the blood-meal. No sporogonic stages were found in some unidentified leeches fed on an infected caiman, up to 30 days following the blood-meal. When mosquitoes containing mature oocysts were fed to frogs (Leptodactylus fuscus and Rana catesbeiana), cysts containing cystozoites developed in the internal organs, principally the liver. Feeding these frogs to farm-bred caimans resulted in the appearance of gametocytes in their peripheral blood at some time between 59 and 79 days later, and the development of tissue cysts in the liver, spleen, lungs and kidneys. Transmission of the parasite was also obtained by feeding young caimans with infected mosquitoes and it is suggested that both methods occur in nature. The finding of similar cysts containing cystozoites in the semi-aquatic lizard Neusticurus bicarinatus, experimentally fed with infected C. fatigans, suggests that other secondary hosts may be involved.  相似文献

Metacercariae of Bolbophorus species are serious pathogens of farmed fish. Molecular diagnostic tools, capable of identifying and differentiating these parasites, may assist in the development of rationale control strategies. The rDNA 18S (small sub-unit: SSU) genes of adult B. confusus and B. levantinus obtained from a pelican, Pelecanus onocrotalus, and a night heron, Nycticorax nycticorax, respectively, were amplified, sequenced, and aligned. Based on this alignment, we developed a genetic differentiation assay between B. confusus and B. levantinus. These 2 species were compared genetically with the North American species B. damnificus and Bolbophorus sp. ('Type 2'). The relationship between species is outlined and discussed. In addition to the molecular study, specimens of B. confusus and B. levantinus were compared morphologically, using scanning electron microscopy. Morphologic analysis revealed interspecific differences in details of the holdfast organ and the position of the acetabulum.  相似文献

Iridovirus infections in farm-reared tropical ornamental fish   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A systemic viral infection in both gourami Trichogaster spp. and swordtail Xiphophorus hellerii and an outbreak of lymphocystis in scalare Pterophyllum scalarae and gourami are reported to have occurred in fish reared in ornamental fish farms in Israel. The systemic infection developed in endothelial cells that became hypertrophic and their contents were modified. The presence of such cells in light-microscopically examined stained smears and sections provides an initial indication for this systemic viral infection. Infection in gourami caused hemorrhagic dropsy. Transmission electron microscopic (TEM) images of iridovirus-like particles recovered from gouramies showed them to be 138 to 201 nm from vertex to vertex (v-v); those from swordtails were 170 to 188 nm v-v. TEM images of lymphocystis virions from scalare were 312 to 342 nm v-v and from gourami 292 to 341 nm v-v. Lymphocystis cells from the gourami were joined by a solid hyaline plate, which was lacking in the infection in scalare where the intercellular spaces between the lymphocystis cells consisted of loose connective tissue.  相似文献

Natural infection with Sarcocystis has been recovered from 11 species of snakes from Israel and the adjacent territories (Cisjordan), infection was most abundant in subadults. Sporocyst dimensions obtained from the different snakes overlapped in size, but even in a same host species formed distinct size cohorts clustering either around 8.5 x 6.5 microns and 11.0 x 8.5 microns or around 11.0 x 8.5 microns and 12 x 10 microns. Sporocyst-size distribution was, however, altered following cross infections or in consecutively emitted feces. The largest cohort size conformed with the sporocyst dimensions of S. murivipera Matuscka, Heydorn, Mehlhorn, Abd-Al-Az, Diesing, Bichler 1987, described from Vipera palaestinae, one of the snake species included in the present study. Among infected snakes were rodent predators but also species feeding on smaller prey (reptiles). Sporocysts from eight of these species including some small-prey feeders, were available for infecting rodents, all, like S. murivipera, developed into sarcocysts in laboratory white mice (Mus musculus), but in none of the inoculated rodents from other genera, or reptiles. Sarcocysts found in free-ranging house mice infected V. palaestinae. Despite of an apparent conspecificity, Sarcocystis from the different snake species demonstrated a pronounced variation in their virulence to mice. Primary wall was identical in all ultrastructurally studied sarcocysts found in both house mice and laboratory mice fed on sporocysts from the diverse snake species.  相似文献

Testudo groeca tortoises were collected in the northern and southern Golan Heights (Israeli occupied territory of south Syria), and various locations in Israel and Palestine. Hyoalomma oegyptium ticks were found only on Golan Height tortoises, and only the tortoises and ticks from the northern Golan Heights were infected with Hemolivia mouritanica. Tortoises became infected after ingesting infected ticks. Male ticks carrying sporocysts, which remain attached to tortoises for extended durations, apparently served as the source for dissemination of new infections among tortoises. Sporogenesis followed the pattern observed in the two other known species of Hemolivia, though there was some evident variation in fine-structura detail. The sutural slit detected in the H. mouritanica mature sporocyst wall was reminiscent of the suture characteristic of Coccidia of heterothermic vertebrate hosts; it could be a common ancestral character for both hemogregarines  相似文献

The myxosporean Enteromyxum leei is known to infect a wide range of marine fish hosts. The objective of the present study was to determine whether freshwater fish species are also receptive hosts to this parasite. Seventeen species of freshwater fish were experimentally fed E. leei-infected gut tissue from donor gilthead sea bream Sparus aurata obtained from a commercial sea bream cage farm. Four of the tested species, tiger barb Puntius tetrazona, zebra danio Danio rerio, oscar Astronotus ocellatus and Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus, were found to be susceptible with prevalences ranging from 53 to 90%. The course of infection and pathology was limited to the gut mucosa epithelium and was similar to that observed in marine hosts. Little is known of the differences in physiological conditions encountered by a parasite in the alimentary tract of freshwater vs. marine teleost hosts, but we assume that a similar osmotic environment is maintained in both. Parasite infectivity may be influenced by differences in the presence or absence of a true stomach, acidic gastric pH and digestive enzyme activity both in the stomach and intestine. Variability in susceptibility among species may also stem from differences in innate immunity. Dimensions of spores produced in the donor sea bream and recipient freshwater species are variable in size, as previously observed in other captive marine host species.  相似文献
