AIM: We evaluated differences between men and women with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) combined with nocturia. METHODS: A total of 71 age-matched female-male pairs (median 58, range 20-81 years) who had moderate to severe LUTS and nocturia of more than once per night were enrolled in this study. RESULTS: In the younger group (<50 years), the International Prostate Symptom Score (I-PSS) results of the sexes were not significantly different. However, although total I-PSS results in the elderly group (> or =50 years) were not significantly different, quality of life index scores for women were higher (P = 0.002). On frequency-volume (FV) charts, mean total daytime voided volume (DVV) was significantly higher in younger men than in younger women (P = 0.017), but the mean nocturnal polyuria index (NPi) for women was higher than that for men (P = 0.047). However, maximum DVV (P = 0.009), mean DVV (P < 0.0001), total DVV (P < 0.0001), and mean nocturnal urine volume (P = 0.009) were significantly higher in elderly men than in elderly women. However, numbers of daytime voids were not different. CONCLUSION: Elderly women with LUTS have lower functional bladder capacities than elderly men, as suggested by their smaller mean voided volumes. However, no significant differences were observed between numbers of daytime voids, which was probably due to the smaller total daytime voided volumes of elderly women. In addition, although NPi for younger women and nocturnal urine volume for elderly men was higher, no other differences were observed in terms of other night-time parameters.  相似文献

Mutations in the Bruton's tyrosine kinase (BTK) gene are responsible for X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA). We identified BTK mutations in six patients with presumed XLA from unrelated Korean families. Four out of six mutations were novel: two missense mutations (P565T, C154Y), a point mutation in a splicing donor site (IVS11+1G>A), and a large deletion (a 6.1-kb deletion including BTK exons 11–18). The large deletion, identified by long-distance PCR, revealed Alu-Alu mediated recombination extended from an Alu sequence in intron 10 to another Alu sequence in intron 18, spanning a distance of 6.1 kb. The two known mutations consisted of one missense (G462D) mutation, and a point mutation in a splicing acceptor site (IVS7−9A>G). This study suggests that large genomic rearrangements involving Alu repeats are few but an important component of the spectrum of BTK mutations.  相似文献

TRAIL is a cytokine that can induce tumor-specific apoptosis through its specific death receptors (DR4 and DR5) and p53 has been proven to increase the expression of death receptors. To examine their interaction in tumor suppression, p53 and TRAIL genes were inserted in recombinant adenovirus vectors and transferred simultaneously into non-small cell lung cancer cell lines (NCI-H157, NCI-H358, NCI-H460 and A549). Western blot assay demonstrated production of TRAIL protein in NCI-H157 and A549 cell lines. Increased expressions of DR4 and DR5 of NCI-H157 and DR4 of A549 after p53 overexpression were confirmed by flow cytometry. p53 or TRAIL gene transfer increased sub-G1 fraction in cell cycle analysis and inhibited the tumor growth dose-dependently and the degree was potentiated by co-transfer. But isobologram analysis indicated an additive effect. Together, these data indicate that p53 and TRAIL interact additively on tumor apoptosis despite theoretical synergism.  相似文献

Tetanus is uncommon in Korea due to the introduction of vaccination programs and advances in public health. A case of maternal tetanus occurred on the 9 day postpartum in a 29-yr-old woman, who had not received a 10-yr-booster of tetanus-diphtheria toxoid after receiving the primary series of tetanus-toxoid-containing vaccine. There has hitherto been no reports on maternal tetanus in Korea. This case illustrates that tetanus remains a medical problem, principally among non- and under-immunized adults. The only way to fully prevent this disease is to ensure adequate immunization in all adults.  相似文献

The distribution pattern of extracellular matrix (ECM) components in transplant glomerulopathy was studied in relation to light microscopic features, actin expression of mesangial cells, and intraglomerular inflammatory cells. Nine cases of mild (group I) and nine cases of severe (group II) transplant glomerulopathy were stained with antisera against fibronectin (FN), tenascin (TN), collagen types III and IV, smooth muscle actin, CD45RO, CD68, and Ki-67 antigen. The composition of ECM was similar in the two groups. The expanded mesangium was diffusely stained by type-IV collagen, FN and TN, and focally and weakly stained by type-III collagen and smooth muscle actin. Type-IV collagen was linearly stained along the capillary walls, imparting a double-contour feature, whereas FN and TN showed granular staining along the capillary walls. CD68 positive cells were increased in severe transplant glomerulopathy, but this increase was not related to ECM deposition. These findings suggest that increased glomerular deposition of normal and abnormal ECM components participate in the evolution of transplant glomerulopathy. A new all-aqueous process is described to form three-dimensional porous silk fibroin matrices with control of structural and morphological features. The result of this process are scaffolds with controllable porosity and pore sizes that fully degrade in the presence of proteases, unlike prior methods to generate silk-based biomaterials that required the use of organic solvent treatments to impart control of structure and stability in aqueous environments, with low rates of proteolytic hydrolysis. A mechanism is proposed for this novel process that imparts physical stability via hydrophobic interactions. Adjusting the concentration of silk fibroin in water, and the particle size of granular NaCl used in the process, leads to the control of morphological and functional properties of the scaffolds. The aqueous-derived scaffolds had highly homogeneous and interconnected pores with pore sizes ranging from 470 to 940 microm, depending on the mode of preparation. The scaffolds had porosities >90% and compressive strength and modulus up to 320 +/- 10 and 3330 +/- 500 KPa, respectively, when formed from 10% aqueous solutions of fibroin. The scaffolds fully degraded upon exposure to protease during 21 days, unlike the scaffolds prepared from organic solvent processing. These new silk-based three-dimensional matrices provide useful properties as biomaterial matrices due to the all-aqueous mode of preparation, control of pore size, connectivity of pores, degradability and useful mechanical features. Importantly, this process offers an entirely new window of materials properties when compared with traditional silk fibroin-based materials.  相似文献

We investigated the kinetics of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 neutralizing antibodies in 7 asymptomatic persons and 11 patients with pneumonia.
