Stainless steel is attractive as material for bipolar plates in proton exchange membrane fuel cells, due to its high electrical conductivity, high mechanical strength and relatively low material and processing cost. Potentiostatic and potentiodynamic tests were performed in H2SO4 solutions on AISI 316L stainless steel bipolar plates with etched flow fields. The effect of pH and presence of small amounts of fluoride and chloride on the corrosion rate and interfacial contact resistance of the stainless steel bipolar plate were investigated. The tests performed in electrolytes with various pH values revealed that the oxide layer was thinner and more prone to corrosion at pH values significantly lower than the pH one expects the bipolar plate to experience in an operating proton exchange membrane fuel cells. The use of solutions with very low pH in such measurements is thus probably not the best way of accelerating the corrosion rate of stainless steel bipolar plates. By use of strongly acidic solutions the composition and thickness of the oxide layer on the stainless steel is probably altered in a way that might never have happened in an operating proton exchange membrane fuel cell. Additions of fluoride and chloride in the amounts expected in an operating fuel cell (2 ppm F and 10 ppm Cl) did not cause significant changes for neither the polarization- nor the contact resistance measurements. However, by increasing the amount of Cl to 100 ppm, pitting was initiated on the stainless steel surface.  相似文献

Calcium carbonate is one of the most common scaling minerals. In this paper we have used different electrical current modes (direct current [DC], pulsed DC, and alternating current [AC]) to control the amount, morphology, and distribution of calcium carbonate deposit on electroconductive epoxy/carbon nanofiber (CNF) coating. The effect of different current modes on surface scaling was visualized using scanning electron microscopy. It has been shown that both AC and DC anodic polarization limited scale deposition on epoxy/CNF coated surfaces, although the mechanisms of scale inhibition during AC and DC polarization were different. DC polarization of the coating at +2 V resulted in the smallest scale buildup without leading to coating degradation, while DC polarization at potentials as high as +5 V caused the coating to degrade. Interestingly, application of pulsed DC with high pulse frequency (50 Hz) inhibited the degradation. The type of current applied affected also the morphology of the precipitate at the cathode. The results presented in this work show, for the first time, how different modes of electrical current applied to electroconductive composite coatings can be used to control the morphology and distribution of calcium carbonate scale, and how the organic coating degradation at high polarization potentials can be avoided.  相似文献

Luminescence features of cross-linked polyethylene samples peeled from high voltage cables have been investigated. Special emphasis is given to the effect of crosslinking by-products on the emission. Photoluminescence and luminescence following excitation by a silent discharge have been examined in order to identify which of the luminescent centres are optically active following electrical charge recombination, and could therefore act as charge traps. Both fluorescence and phosphorescence contain signatures of volatile and bound species. However, the identification of the origin of these emissions is far from complete. The signature of acetophenone has been clearly identified in the phosphorescence spectra. Radiative charge recombination involves the long lived components of the phosphorescence spectrum, i.e. the lowest lying triplet states. Some routes are given for identifying more precisely the origin of the emissions.  相似文献

Knowledge of the effects of processing on the antioxidant properties of fruits is limited. We investigated the processing of apple (A) and purple grape (PG) and their juices (AJ and PGJ) in hypercholesterolemic hamsters. Five groups of eight hamsters each were fed an atherogenic diet for 12 wk. They received daily by gavage either 7.14 mL/(kg x day) of mashed A or PG, or the same volume of AJ or PGJ, or water as control. Plasma cholesterol, non-HDL cholesterol, liver superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances were efficiently reduced by the fruits and their juices compared with controls, whereas plasma antioxidant capacity was increased and aortic fatty streak area was decreased from 48 to 93%. For each of these parameters, the efficacy was PGJ > PG > AJ > A. The results show for the first time that long-term consumption of antioxidants supplied by apple and purple grape, especially phenolic compounds, prevents the development of atherosclerosis in hamsters, and that processing can have a major impact on the potential health benefits of a product. The underlying mechanism is related mainly to increased antioxidant status and improved serum lipid profile.  相似文献

This paper deals with procurement routes in public building and construction projects in Norway. Seen from a practical point of view, as well as from a theoretical one, it is important to improve methods for selection of procurement procedure, contract model, and compensation formats. The paper objective is to find out if public owners select a procurement route according to recommended practice. The sources are literature, support material for two software tools for selection of the procurement route, and documentation from 22 public building and construction projects in Norway. According to the literature and the support material for the two software tools, the answer to what is the proper procurement route will depend on the characteristics of each project. The documentation study implies that public owners continue to select the same procurement route as they are in the habit of. They do not consider what procurement route suits each single project, and therefore they do not select the route according to recommended practice. The paper calls for innovation and better supported selection of the procurement route in public building and construction projects.  相似文献

Antioxidant capacity and angiotensin 1-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity of a melon concentrate rich in superoxide dismutase (SOD-MC) were investigated in vitro. The total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was measured by the Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity assay (TEAC), the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical assay, and the ferric reducing antioxidant power assay (FRAP). The ability of the extract to scavenge three specific reactive oxygen species (superoxide radical anion (O(2)(-)), hydroxyl radical (HO()) and hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2))) was also investigated in order to better evaluate its antioxidant properties. Even if the measures of TAC were relatively low, results clearly established an antioxidant potential of SOD-MC that exhibited the highest radical-scavenging activity towards O(2)(-), with a IC(50) 12-fold lower than that of H(2)O(2) or HO(). This lets hypothesis that the antioxidant potential of SOD-MC could be mainly due to its high level of SOD. Moreover, for the first time, an ACE inhibitory activity of SOD-MC (IC(50)=2.4±0.1mg/mL) was demonstrated, showing that its use as a functional food ingredient with potential preventive benefits in the context of hypertension may have important public health implications and should be carefully considered.  相似文献

The effects of raspberries on early atherosclerosis in Syrian hamsters were investigated using three juices prepared from var. Cardinal, Glen Ample and Tulameen berries. The hamsters received an atherogenic diet for 12 weeks and at the same time a juice at a daily dose corresponding to the consumption of 275 ml by a 70 kg human. A control group received the same diet with water instead juice. The principal polyphenolic compounds in the juices were anthocyanins and ellagitannins, which were present at concentrations of 218-305 μg mL(-1) and 45-72 μg mL(-1), respectively. The three juices had similar but not identical effects. They all inhibited cardiac and aortic production of superoxide anion and increased hepatic glutathione peroxidase activity although only Tulameen juice brought about a significant increase in superoxide dismutase activity. Glen Ample was the only juice to significantly increase plasma paraoxonase activity. All the juices lowered plasma triglyceride level while consumption of Tulameen and Cardinal, but not Glen Ample, significantly lowered plasma total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol. Cardinal was the sole juice to significantly increase HDL-cholesterol and likewise it also significantly reduced body weight. These findings suggest that moderate consumption of raspberry juices can help to prevent the development of early atherosclerosis, with the underlying mechanisms related to improved antioxidant status and serum lipid profiles.  相似文献

Côtes du Rhône red wines prepared from both different types of grape and processing were tested in hamsters receiving an atherogenic diet for 12 weeks and a daily gavage with 12% ethanol, red wines from vinification by flash release (GRE FD, SYR FD and BLEND FD), by tanisage (BLEND TAN), by traditional vinification (BLEND), or water as control. Except BLEND TAN, consumption of wines lowered plasma total and LDL-cholesterol. Aortic lipid deposits were reduced by ethanol (30%), wines (54% on average) or BLEND TAN (65%). Cardiac production of superoxide anion decreased from 20% (BLEND and BLEND TAN) to 33% (SYR FD and BLEND FD). The expression of NAD(P)H oxidase decreased by 44% (SYR FD), 26% (BLEND), 47% (BLEND FD) and 44% (BLEND TAN). Except ethanol and GRE FD, wines increased uricemia by 15% on average. These findings indicate that chronic consumption of red wine has potential beneficial effects to prevent the development of atherosclerosis. Prevention of NAD(P)H oxidase induction and preservation of aortic lipids oxidation likely contribute to this effect.  相似文献

The authors have sought the existence of cellular hyper-receptivity in susceptible cells in order to explain the transformation of normal uterine muscle fibres into tumours, because of the absence of true biological proof of hyperoestrogenization in fibromyomata. The total of uterine receptors for oestradiol (the total number of accessible receptors or those in which endogenous oestrogens had been taken up) were measured in normal myometrium and in fibroids removed at myomectomy or at hysterectomy. The oestradiol receptors are significantly raised in fibromyomatous tissue when the results are expressed as femtomoles per mg. of protein. All the same, there is no significant difference to be found when the results are expressed in micrograms of DNA, which leads to the supposition that there is no significant difference in the concentration of oestrogen receptors in the two types of cells. The cause of the cellular multiplication of fibromyomatous tissue should therefore be sought at another level.  相似文献
